Decent article. However, I wish the sports writers would stop using PFF stats...anyone who actually watched the team last year could see John Jerry's issues were more in pass protection (particularly on stunts, blitzes).
Giants spotlight turns to ... John Jerry? - (
New Window )
Parker?
That was my first thought too. Isn't Jerry primarily a RG?
(We are SO fucked!)
Pugh.
Jerry.
Richburg.
Schwartz.
Flowers.
Pugh has never played LT in the NFL. Jerry was bad last year. Richbug has never played center in the NFL. Schwartz barely played at all last year. Flowers is a rookie. Everyone else is a JAG.
ha! First thing I thought too....that was a good line....not quite good enough, but better than we have now
I think the Giants need to reshuffle the line in a way that is best going to fit a new plan next year. Didn't Beatty have another significant injury 2 seasons ago? Didn't it take him longer than the original estimate to recover?
Might as well count Beatty out for this year, rebuild the line so it doesn't need to be completely reshuffled for 2016, and move forward.
Who is the best LT candidate for this year (Pugh) and the long term (Pugh or Flowers)? Who is the best RT candidate for this year (Flowers or Schwartz) and the long term (Flowers)? Who are the best guards? Schwartz and somebody (Jerry, Jones, Mosley, Hart).
Going forward, the line should be LT Pugh, LG somebody, C Richburg, RG Schwartz, RT Flowers.
If there plan is Flowers at LT, this keeps 3/5ths of the line where they want it to be, and those three are the core of the unit now. Not saying its my preferred option, or the most likely, only that it may be a possibility, especially if Flowers is a home run.
Meant to add, Jones should make the team as the B/U OC and I question whether or not Jerry has a real chance of making it. We will see!
John Jerry has a well established career tracker record for mediocrity. Its odd that you'd ignore that for a few good games and be so confident in him.

Feel free to jump now.

improved towards the end..If inserted at OLG, I'd enjoy the BBI meltdown, but i wouldn't be all that concerned while Beatty recovers

Not confident in him per se..Just inserting him IF NECESSARY is not the calamity many claim it is..You can win with a journeyman on the OL, as long as the OL is not all or mostly comprised of journeyman..

You can, but you'd rather not obviously. Such is life.

I have a lot of respect for your opinions BB56 so I have to ask:
The situation with a rooky Flowers, Richburgh who has not played center in the NFL yet, Schwartz being injured most of 2014, and Jerry being not so great doesn't scare you? And as it was last year the OL could not give us a running game. I'm not a doom and gloom type of guy but I think this OL has been in very sad shape for three years now. So bad that I could not have any expectations for us presenting a good offense those years.
I thought we made good moves in the draft but knew we were one injury away from being in OL hell again. I sure wish I could be as comfortable about this as you are.

Nicky, not really, honestly..Most of us here felt Flowers would be our starting ORT from the get-go..Will he? I believe so..Schwartz is healthy from what I understand and he's a good player. Steady..Yes, Richburg played G last year and showed some good signs..His natural position is C, so I really have no fear there..Pugh has played OLT and should acquit himself well, imo..If Diehl can survive at OLT, Pugh, who is more athletic, should be ok..
Do I know for sure? Of course not..Perhaps the bulb hoes on for Mosley..Perhaps Jones makes enough of an impression to kick Richburg back to G..
I have more confidence in this OL starting the season than I did last year once Schwartz went down..
My major concern as always are debilitating injuries
Eric, if the PFF stats don't back up my thinking, I won't use them. I disagree with you on this one. Aside from the 49ers game (which was an utter disaster and with Charles Brown at RT) I thought his pass blocking was serviceable.
Jerry has talent. He's big and they say his feet are good enuf to play tackle.
The stuff that was going on with the Off. line in Miami speaks of bad coaching. The guy missed pre season, came in and didn't miss a down. His pass blocking was rated very good. He had Walton on his left and an injured Pugh on his right....
Is it possible that a year of good coaching and stronger players around him produces a very good pass blocker and an adequate run blocker.? The Grizz Ball says ....Yes.
Not only possible , but more likely than not.
The Giants running game was so bad across the board, I'm not sure how anyone can single out Jerry for the problem.

You are right about Walton getting manhandled but my complaint about him was that he would disengage from the play too soon. The play would still be evolving around him while he often just stood there.

Offensive lines are the sum of their parts.
Agree.
In the gif? That's Fells.
Again the game vs. Seattle was another where Pugh didn't play. And while he certainly struggled (especially with blitzes and stunts), I don't think it's a coincidence it occurred with Charles Brown and James Brewer next to him.
The run blocking is a different story. IMO, he didn't finish blocks well or play with power.
Sorta like how OBJ's presence has seemed to invigorate Randle?
I am not worried about pass blocking because we can do some things to allow Eli to get rid of the ball. It's run blocking that's always worried me. Hopefully whoever steps in can, with enough reps, adjust to the LT position and contribute to the running blocking without letting his man in the backfield.
