EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Giants left tackle Will Beatty underwent successful surgery to repair a torn pectoral muscle last evening at Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan. Beatty suffered the injury during weight training on Tuesday. His expected recovery time is five to six months. Beatty, the Giants’ second-round draft choice in 2009, is entering his seventh season with the team. He has played in 82 regular-season games with 63 starts – one start as an extra lineman/tight end/eligible receiver in 2012; 42 at left tackle in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014; and four at right tackle in 2009. In 2014, Beatty played in every game for the third consecutive season and started all 16 games for the second year in a row. His streak of 46 consecutive starts is the second-longest on the team among current players, trailing only Eli Manning’s 167 starts in a row. Beatty has missed time in the past with a fractured foot (2010) and a detached retina (2011). He did not play in the 2012 preseason because of a back injury. Beatty suffered a fractured fibula in the 2013 season finale vs. Washington, but returned to start every game last season. |
Agreed.
Big loss, regardless of what you think of Beatty.
Was a starter.............
Carrying him on the roster but having him be inactive for the first half of the season? At least that keeps the short-term IR slot open for someone else, but chews up an entire roster spot.
Put him on long-term IR and have him miss the entire season? Given his expected return date, this isn't such a remote option. It frees up a roster spot for someone else that could conceivably contribute all year, but our depth at OT would be scary thin and again, we lose him for the year.
The Giants are in a tough spot here. What do you think they'll do?
a possible solution that not many people have mentioned is Schwartz to RT, Pugh to LG, and Jerry to RG with Flowers holding down the LT spot.
Yup. The PUP list was made for exactly this kind of situation.
The Giants have led the league in injuries for two years in a row, both by a wide margin. Common sense tells me that such a high number of injuries cannot be due to just bad luck. The Giants claim that they have examined this question, but have not told us, their fans what they did about it.
I have at least one obvious question. Did the weight-caused pectoral tears occur during supervised activities by Giant employees? We disserve better explanations than we have been given up to now about what the Giant coaches have done to try to cut back on such injuries.
Fourth in recent years was a DT we drafted in the 2nd. Austin?
Amukamara had a biceps tear. Thurmond tore his pec.
Occurred in a game?
I've just got a bad feeling that Beatty is gone for the season.
While in need of replacement himself, at least he was experienced and a know quantity.
Oh, well, guess it's time to see if any of the acquisitions can play LT. As bad as it is, it may be that it comes down to a rookie, Newhouse, Pugh or Schwartz, if healthy. I know Schwartz isn't a LT, or really even an OT, but he is a big body with experience.
Pick your poison, rookie or suboptimal replacement?
Beatty
Ayers
Thurmand
Boothe
Something is wrong.
The Giants seem to have well more than their share of non contact injuries.
Though I mentioned it in another thread that June 1 cuts are a possibility, how many LTs will be cut, and worth anything?
At best we get a RT and maybe JP moves to LT; most likely Ereck is the LT and we pick up a left OG.
last year they broke their previous record.
Something is seriously wrong with Giants S&C .
QUIT BITCHING
How many of you thought david deihl, on the day he was drafted, would be the starting OLT on a super bowl team?
flowers looks like a good ORT candidate:
Why? It's too soon for Flowers on the left side. He has enough of a learning curve without being asked to block the opponents most talented position week in and week out. Pugh has the experience now to slide over effectively. In fact he's better suited to LT than RT imo. Jones will hopefully beat out Jerry because Jerry stinks plain and simple. Schwartz belongs on the right side...he said as much himself. Richburg at C over Jones because a rookie CFL transfer has enough to worry about without the added pressure of making the calls and leading the group.

Exactly I just posted the same thing on another thread. The Giants also won the superbowl in 2011 with a Diehl at LT after Beatty was injured and placed on IR. Diehl played with a broken hand and he was declining and he played very poorly. Pugh is a better OT than Diehl and I agree with you that LT is probably Pugh's best position. After everyone takes time to calm down I think they will realize that Pugh is a solid option at LT. My main concern about the injury is that it likely places Jerry back in the starting lineup. Hopefully they still move Schwartz over to RG and insert Jerry in at LG if he is going to start. IIRC Jerry played mostly at LG with Miami.
