Giants Officially Confirming Beatty Will Be Out 5-6 Months

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Giants left tackle Will Beatty underwent successful surgery to repair a torn pectoral muscle last evening at Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan.

Beatty suffered the injury during weight training on Tuesday. His expected recovery time is five to six months.

Beatty, the Giants’ second-round draft choice in 2009, is entering his seventh season with the team. He has played in 82 regular-season games with 63 starts – one start as an extra lineman/tight end/eligible receiver in 2012; 42 at left tackle in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014; and four at right tackle in 2009.

In 2014, Beatty played in every game for the third consecutive season and started all 16 games for the second year in a row. His streak of 46 consecutive starts is the second-longest on the team among current players, trailing only Eli Manning’s 167 starts in a row.

Beatty has missed time in the past with a fractured foot (2010) and a detached retina (2011). He did not play in the 2012 preseason because of a back injury. Beatty suffered a fractured fibula in the 2013 season finale vs. Washington, but returned to start every game last season.

Agreed.
Was it confirmed that he actually hurt himself under S&C supervision?

If he heals quickly....
BillKo : 5/21/2015 12:23 pm : link
we could see him back by November 1............

Big loss, regardless of what you think of Beatty.

Was a starter.............
So what do we do with Beatty's spot?
GiantNatty : 5/21/2015 12:33 pm : link
Put him on the roster to start the season and then immediately put him on the short-term IR? I don't like that very much - I like keeping that spot open rather than knowing it's used before the season even starts.

Carrying him on the roster but having him be inactive for the first half of the season? At least that keeps the short-term IR slot open for someone else, but chews up an entire roster spot.

Put him on long-term IR and have him miss the entire season? Given his expected return date, this isn't such a remote option. It frees up a roster spot for someone else that could conceivably contribute all year, but our depth at OT would be scary thin and again, we lose him for the year.

The Giants are in a tough spot here. What do you think they'll do?

yep

Since this occured prior to training camp
Hades07 : 5/21/2015 12:37 pm : link
you put him on PUP list.
better it happen now than later i guess is a positive view
GiantsFan84 : 5/21/2015 12:43 pm : link
at least the new line will have time to get a lot of reps in together and it gives the coaches time to figure out the best solution.

a possible solution that not many people have mentioned is Schwartz to RT, Pugh to LG, and Jerry to RG with Flowers holding down the LT spot.
Sorry,
Hades07 : 5/21/2015 12:51 pm : link
but any configuration that includes Jerry can not qualify as a solution.

Yup. The PUP list was made for exactly this kind of situation.

Well... Mr Flowers... ur up kid.
Beatty has probably played his last down as a Giant

Even with living through some rough rookie moments, I can't imagine Flowers won't have taken over the OLT job by the time Beatty's back.
Pectoral Muscle tears
bigfish703 : 5/21/2015 1:47 pm : link
are not frequent. If my memory serves me correctly, this is at least the 4th such injury that has occured to a Giant player. Both Kevin Boothe and Will Beatty tore theirs while lifting weights. Amukamura,s injury was during a game. Was there a 4th one in recent years? Somebody out there, help me on this one.

The Giants have led the league in injuries for two years in a row, both by a wide margin. Common sense tells me that such a high number of injuries cannot be due to just bad luck. The Giants claim that they have examined this question, but have not told us, their fans what they did about it.

I have at least one obvious question. Did the weight-caused pectoral tears occur during supervised activities by Giant employees? We disserve better explanations than we have been given up to now about what the Giant coaches have done to try to cut back on such injuries.

Amukamara had a biceps tear. Thurmond tore his pec.
Didn't Strahan have a tear?
Ivan15 : 5/21/2015 2:25 pm : link
Pec or bicep?

Occurred in a game?
Was feeling optimistic about the OL prior to this
JFIB : 5/21/2015 2:26 pm : link
Now I have very little faith. Silly to have felt good about the line considering we were one injury from a scrub insertion but what the hell are they going to do now? One would hope that Jones shows something early and he gets a shot at LG with Pugh moving to LT. That would be best case even if it means 4 guys playing positions for the first time in the NFL. This has potential to be really ugly.
Depressing.
TC : 5/21/2015 3:05 pm : link
And it's hard to depress a long-time Giants fan.

I've just got a bad feeling that Beatty is gone for the season.

While in need of replacement himself, at least he was experienced and a know quantity.

Oh, well, guess it's time to see if any of the acquisitions can play LT. As bad as it is, it may be that it comes down to a rookie, Newhouse, Pugh or Schwartz, if healthy. I know Schwartz isn't a LT, or really even an OT, but he is a big body with experience.

Pick your poison, rookie or suboptimal replacement?

but it gives someone a chance to go all out and prove they should be a starter.
Though I mentioned it in another thread that June 1 cuts are a possibility, how many LTs will be cut, and worth anything?
At best we get a RT and maybe JP moves to LT; most likely Ereck is the LT and we pick up a left OG.
broken record
giantfan2000 : 5/21/2015 4:13 pm : link
two years ago the Giants broke the record for the most games missed by players on IR.
last year they broke their previous record.

Something is seriously wrong with Giants S&C .

Is that we have time to prepare. Either that means Pugh or Flowers at LT or we trade for one. Beatty's injury while devastating, would have been much worse if it happened in training camp or early in the season. Let's see what Jerry Reese decides to do about this. Also, looking a the time frame,if Beatty heals quickly,he might be back before Nov.
Pugh may very well be more suited for OLT than ORT
idiotsavant : 5/21/2015 5:31 pm : link
and, last year he had an injury.

How many of you thought david deihl, on the day he was drafted, would be the starting OLT on a super bowl team?

flowers looks like a good ORT candidate:

So is he our IR player who can return

The OL configuration to try first is....
Torrag : 5/21/2015 6:28 pm : link
Pugh-Jones-Richburg-Schwartz-Flowers

Why? It's too soon for Flowers on the left side. He has enough of a learning curve without being asked to block the opponents most talented position week in and week out. Pugh has the experience now to slide over effectively. In fact he's better suited to LT than RT imo. Jones will hopefully beat out Jerry because Jerry stinks plain and simple. Schwartz belongs on the right side...he said as much himself. Richburg at C over Jones because a rookie CFL transfer has enough to worry about without the added pressure of making the calls and leading the group.

I don't see Reese trading away any
mikeygiants : 5/21/2015 7:01 pm : link
chips for a short term OL patch, so that's probably what he'll do.

I agree that should camp go well and they stay healthy, we have to hope Pugh can handle LT and Flowers RT. I have a good feeling about CFL standout B. Jones but I'm not sure he has enough experience to win a starting OG job. Comments are that at 6' 2" he may be better suited to OC. However, I'm not holding to that theory. I want to see the kid run block and see how aggressive he is.
Every year recently.

Exactly I just posted the same thing on another thread. The Giants also won the superbowl in 2011 with a Diehl at LT after Beatty was injured and placed on IR. Diehl played with a broken hand and he was declining and he played very poorly. Pugh is a better OT than Diehl and I agree with you that LT is probably Pugh's best position. After everyone takes time to calm down I think they will realize that Pugh is a solid option at LT. My main concern about the injury is that it likely places Jerry back in the starting lineup. Hopefully they still move Schwartz over to RG and insert Jerry in at LG if he is going to start. IIRC Jerry played mostly at LG with Miami.
Richburg will be Center (I think)
UberAlias : 5/22/2015 9:02 am : link
I don't see that position being impacted. Schwartz and Jerry are Guards. You line your two first rounders at the tackles with Pugh a left sider and the bigger Flowers on the right.
