NFT: Mets vs Cardinals, 1pm start.

spike : 5/21/2015 12:06 pm
Please let DeGrom (4-4, 3.21 ERA) be the stopper! He is opposed by Jaime Garcia, who is starting for the first time since undergoing thoracic outlet surgery in July.

If he doesn't work out, maybe the Cardinals would be willing to take one of Niese/Gee/Colon out of our hands as their no 5 starter for their stretch run?

deGrom

looks fantastic. Unlike Wheeler whom I think is overrated by the fanbase, I think deGrom is 100% legit, early struggles aside.
Lets see if he bats
NewBlue : 5/21/2015 3:05 pm : link
He is the lead off hitter here

Yup. He's really been the stopper two games in a row too. Love to see that he's back on track.
Oh well

Our closer better not do what he did Monday night for Harvey

Agreed. deGrom has the mental part down much better than Wheeler, who reminds me Strasburg a little in that respect. Still, Wheeler in the lower part of the rotation is nothing to complain about.
Of course not

Not even asking you directly but Why would anybody be comparing deGrom to Wheeler? There is no doubt by anyone alive deGrom is leagues better. Wheeler is all about potential unfulfilled at this point.
6 runs in 4 games

POSSIBLY 2 wins to show for it

Wheeler is a fantastic no 2 pitcher and he could be our no 3 or no4 in this rotation
It is kind of brutal
ZGiants98 : 5/21/2015 3:09 pm : link
that Cambell and Plawecki have been absolutely the two biggest holes in the lineup. The drop off between TDA and Wright and those two has been monumental.

I mentioned Wheeler because he's discussed as if he belongs with the Harvey/deGrom group and he really doesn't. Maybe something will turn on and he'll improve significantly but I'm actually ranking Wheeler 5th amongst the "young" arms in the system if asked. I think his name is much bigger than his game so far in his career. I would have 100% for trading Wheeler for a young big bat before the injury. The fact they discussed him with the Giants likely means they feel the same way (though I have no idea what their target was, maybe Brandon Crawford?).
And Wheeler is our
ZGiants98 : 5/21/2015 3:11 pm : link
number 5 starter at best next year assuming he can wrestle it away from Neise/Montero or whoever is pitching there next June. Our number 5 starter. We dont need him to become anything more than "solid". We no longer need him to be an "ace".

Wheeler is nowhere near a "fantastic no 2 pitcher" at this point. This statement is exactly what I mean. Maybe one day he becomes that but he was 54th in baseball in FIP last year and he couldn't last late into games. His name might make him "fantastic #2" results say otherwise.

And one of those games went 14 innings. So more like 2 runs in 4 3/4 games
If

I think you could make the case Wheeler was discussed along the likes of Harvey and deGrom when they were first breaking in but I dont think anybody would compare Wheeler to them today. I think its pretty obvious that Harvey and deGrom are two of the best pitchers in baseball and most players are never going to become THAT good. Anyways. Just my opinion. I still think Wheeler is going to be solid pitcher. He might be more AJ Burnett than Harvey, but Im fine with that.
Yeah there is no

today and looks like a really nice piece. It's just a damn shame the Cardinals choked away the game Monday night to give this team a split. Could've and should've taken 3 this series before facing a real team in KC for the weekend.
WHOOO
ZGiants98 : 5/21/2015 3:19 pm : link
And there it is! Cuddyer and Duda. Probably the two most important pieces in our lineup to get us going right now.

Makes no sense. Choked away the game Monday??? If anything WE choked away the game to let it be tied in the first place. Harvey pitches 8 scoreless and YOU choked away the game? OK.

Lol at "a real team". You guys got shut down by the only two decent pitchers you faced this series. Lucky you didn't see Thor.

2 worst starting pitchers, and 2 of the best hitters are still out of the line-up. I would take the split and call it a day. Mets will be a better team the next time around (barring more big injuries).
Plawecki
spike : 5/21/2015 3:27 pm : link
and Campbell are black holes offensively these days.
I've
DanMetroMan : 5/21/2015 3:27 pm : link
always rooted for Campbell but I think he might be best suited for Japan or Korea where he can make more money and mash.

What an effort by deGrom!

After the last 2 nights, getting out with a split would be awfully nice.
That is where Kirk will probably end up
debo_GIANTS : 5/21/2015 3:30 pm : link
With that long swing of his, he is not suited to be a bench player.

Not
DanMetroMan : 5/21/2015 3:32 pm : link
kicking dirt on Plawecki but pretty bummed how bad he's looked. He's not a toolsy type, I thought his short swing, good eye at the plate would translate reasonably well quickly. Hasn't been the case, in fact if TDA were to get hurt again I think they would need to import a catcher vs. go with Plawecki.
