NFT: Would you remain a Giants fan if the team moved

bradshaw44 : 5/21/2015 3:10 pm
to another state?

All this talk about the Rams, Chargers and Raiders possibly moving from their respective states and towns got me thinking. Luckily the NYC market is too strong and this would never happen with the Giants. But what do you think the fans in those other cities will do? And what would you do if, God forbid, it did happen?
They already did -
Section331 : 5/21/2015 3:13 pm : link
to NJ.
I meant more of a cross country move...
bradshaw44 : 5/21/2015 3:14 pm : link
But that thought did cross my mind.
It depends on where they moved to and what they changed the name to
SoDev : 5/21/2015 3:14 pm : link
If they became the NJ Giants I would still follow them. If they became something else and changed uniforms I'd probably just not have a team anymore.

This is kind of my thoughts on the matter. Was curious if others are more attached to the organization as a whole, or if it's location-centric.

I might. if they did move my alternative would to become either a Skin fan, ravens fan, jets fan or buffalo fan. my BiL is a Pats fan so I suppose I could go that route too. none of those are appealing.
No

They're my hometown team. When they stop being that I stop being a fan.

steve in ky : 5/21/2015 3:20 pm : link
Since I only watch them live with an occasional away game close enough for me to travel to and the rest on television I would. It really wouldn't be much different other than I would be disappointed that they had.

However if they changed their name and/or uniform then no absolutely not.

I didn't root for the Hurricanes
RB^2 : 5/21/2015 3:23 pm : link
after Bettman harpooned the Whalers but I don't know if this would be different. Luckily I'll never have to find out.
I don't even want to think abut that happening
RiffRaff : 5/21/2015 3:24 pm : link
but I can tell you that my mother swore off baseball all together when her beloved Brooklyn Dodgers moved to L.A. She, like so many others, went into mourning when the team moved out of Brooklyn. She tolerated the Yankees for a while because she knows that her children love the Yanks and the fact that Derek Jeter was on the team. But other than that, baseball is dead to her.

So to answer you question. Not Happy. That's what I'd be, and I don't know whether I would continue rooting for any team after that.
Of course they will never move away from the NY market

I don't care where I lived I could never become a fan of any of the division rivals.
I've lived my whole life in DC
bradshaw44 : 5/21/2015 3:35 pm : link
And I have hated the Skins from jump street. I would NOT become a skins fan. Worst fan base in the world and I can't be associated with them.

I would still watch football but not follow any one particular team.
This question...
Burt Lancaster : 5/21/2015 3:53 pm : link
...is a no-brainer. When the baseball Giants left the Polo Grounds in 1957 for San Francisco it was all over for me. In fact, I lost interest in baseball. There is absolutely no question that the Giants connection with New York City is the vital link between the fans and the Giants organization. And the team owners know this. That is why the team never became the Jersey Giants when it moved to the Meadowlands. Take the New York out of the Giants logo and the team is finished.

That's about right. I'd probably still have a rooting in the Giants in the beginning, but as the players changed it would be reduced every year.

This is why the whole "Buffalo team is only New York team to play in the state" is so damned stupid. They aren't the New York State Giants, they're the New York City Giants.

The Bills don't play in Buffalo. The Cowboys don't play in Dallas, the Redskins don't play in D.C....the list goes on. There's really nothing unique about a team not playing in the city they're named after.

Anyway- I don't think I could follow them if they moved away from NYC and changed the name. I'd probably actively root against them.

But I'm really just not all that sure.

Screw the Dodgers
Big Al : 5/21/2015 4:01 pm : link
Wait a few years. Hello Mets.
No.
Mad Mike : 5/21/2015 4:04 pm : link
Although obviously I'm attached to our various players, and I'd want to keep rooting for them. So as a result I'd probably become a fan of new players who overlap with the guys I'm already a fan of, so it probably wouldn't be an instant thing. But if they're not going to be here, I'm not going to be a fan of the team. I'd actually probably become a pretty vicious hater of them for leaving.

I'm glad I'm a NY fan with that not really being a possibility (Giants and Dodgers notwithstanding).
Absolutely not

I thought about that same question a few years ago
Mike from Ohio : 5/21/2015 4:09 pm : link
when there was talk of the Islanders moving to KC. While I grew up in NY I don't live there anymore, so it is not like them moving would impact me much, but I think I would eventually lose interest. Most of the connection you have to a sports team is to the uniform, the city and the logo. If those all change, it's hard to imagine still having the same passion.

On the other hand, imagine the Giants pick up and move to LA and become the LA Sharks. I would have no interest in that team, but if Coughlin was coaching and Eli was the QB, it would be hard to not pull for them on some level. I imagine that would fade as the coaches and players you did root for moved on, but I don't think I would just pick another team to root for.
Zero chance of happening
Steve in South Jersey : 5/21/2015 4:15 pm : link

I have made this argument with people for years. Other than a few newer trends all NFL team are usually named or tied to a city not a state.
I would abosolutely remain a fan no matter what.
Eli's Got This Stuff : 5/21/2015 4:22 pm : link
I'm more invested in this team than any other team by a mile in any sport. I never lived in NY and have never been to a game in the Meadowlands. I associate with the team not so much the location.

It would be really disappointing though and it would be tough though to keep up if BBI ceased to exist due to a relocation.

Eric isn't located out of NY. I can't speak for him of course but he very likely would keep everything the same.

Moot point anyway they aren't moving the Giants. The best market for an NFL team and the Mara's have protected their territory over the years for a reason.
Probably not
Mr. Nickels : 5/21/2015 4:26 pm : link
Especially if they change the nickname and uniform like the Browns did to the Ravens (before the Browns came back as an expansion and inherited all the old Browns records)

I guess I would be a Jets fan but I would be a Patriots fan until Brady and Belichick leave first.
Giants used to play in CT
beatrixkiddo : 5/21/2015 4:50 pm : link
as well, Yale Bowl years. So that makes 3 states, NY, CT, and NJ.

Of course I would still be a fan of the team.
If they moved but went back to the 1980's
bradshaw44 : 5/21/2015 4:52 pm : link
Uniforms and logo with Giants on the side, I think it would be tough not to root for them. At least while Coughlin and Eli were still there. It would be a tough decision/process for me. I honestly don't know.

If the uniform and name changed I think I would root for them until TC and Eli left and then just not have a team.
It might make a difference if NY got a new franchise

I had to root for Sawyer Fredericks, since he's a local boy, even though I didn't give a shit about the voice. I'd still have an affection for the team, but would have to decide whether to root for Bills, Jets, or Pats (all equi distant from me, more or less)

NY vs NJ is just a game of semantics. They're still on the outskirts of NYC. I doubt there are very many teams that actually play in the city they're named for.
Of course I would.

for the Eagles. Yep. Sure.

Since I live in Orlando now, I'd probably remain a Giant's fan if they kept the name of the team. Another name, another city and 'd have zero ties to them.

I might root for the Bucs, Fins or Jaguars as a bandwagon fan with no bandwagon.

Short answer. Dodgers dispute with city over building of new stadium. Dodgers then convinced Giants to join them in move to west coast which made it more attractive logistically for travel of the other 6 teams for games.

Interesting. Thanks, Al.
I always wondered why
smshmth8690 : 5/21/2015 11:14 pm : link
Dodger & Baseball Giants fans hated the Yankees, and became Mets fans (in many cases), when the Yankees were the only team that didn't abandon the city. I guess hatred dies hard.

I would be so pissed off I'd probably devote all my NFL passion to fantasy football and root against the new giants team. I'd hate them passionately if they moved clear across the country.

It's something I can't even fathom. Even when watching the Browns football life I couldn't process this team leaving. I'd be heartbroken.
