It's too big a risk and Pugh played LT in college. I think Jones could beat out Jerry but Jerry has started 54 straight games and is way better than most here give him credit for. Other than that...
I think it will give us a good run game to the right side with 2 very big men on the right. McAdoo's offense is designed to get the ball out quicker. Then we have chip blocks, RB's that can block, and better threats in the screen game. Eli has shown he can roll to the right. All can help cover up if there's a weakness on the blindside.
I don't think the other suggested formations give us the same capabilities. We still need to maximize the full potential of the entire OL. If we want to run the ball effectively this year, I think we have to have Schwartz and Flowers on the right side. The run game has to be fixed and improves every other part of the offense.
i.e.
Flowers - Pugh - Richburg - TBD - Schwartz
(I don't like Schwartz at RT, where do we run the ball)
Flowers - TBD - Richburg - Schwartz - Pugh
(This might be our line next year which I like for cohesion but I'd like to win this year, where do we run the ball)
Flowers - Pugh - Richburg - Schwartz - Newhouse
(Um no to Newhouse, where do we run the ball)
Flowers - Richburg - Jones - Schwartz - Pugh
(Jones won't be ready and Richburg is our Center, where do we run the ball)
Again, all this is based on current roster and what we know now as fans. When the season starts, for all we know, players may surprise in other positions. Let's also see what Reese does. Maybe another veteran shakes loose or a decent trade opportunity.
Pugh - Jerry (ugh) - Richburg - Schwartz - Flowers
I just can't see Coughlin trusting a guy who just turned 21 and never played a down in the NFL to protect Eli's backside. If they had a dominant guard to play next to him over there then maybe but they don't have that.
It's crazy and sad at the same time.....you are almost afraid to turn on BBI, and find someone else has gone down....
Since 2011, you get your hopes up for the upcoming season, and then, stuff like this happens and you feel like someone just sucker punched you....
So it's next man up.....and we end up with another year of a patchwork line....Eli must be thinking, here we go again....
Let's not over-romanticize 2011. Until the run at the end, it was a mess of a season.
So, yeah, aside from the incredible playoff run, it's been doom and gloom since late 2008.
If they really believe Beatty is coming back, then I could see a Newhouse-Pugh-Richburg-Schwartz-Flowers line-up. Newhouse has 2 years of basically starters experience wit hGB, in roughly the same offense. He could hold down the fort for 1/2 the season. This means the rest of the OL is in their normal positions, so the only change would be Beatty back in. This may be the most stable plan, assuming Newhouse can hold up.
But it be great if we could get lucky with another undrafted, lunch pail type OG in Jones (ala Seubert)
