Defensive Tackle | Roster configuration | Project 6 DE

DavidinBMNY : 5/21/2015 9:02 pm
Defensive Tackle is going to be interesting this year. Spags like to bring the heat, and looking back at the 2008 roster, at least the final roster they had 5 DT and 5 DE.

Now injuries happen, but barring something major I see the Giants going 4 DT and 6 DE. Seriously. Wynn showed enough to me that he should stick with the team. And Owa is going to be on the roster. Wynn, Owa, and Ayers can all swing inside in Pass rush situations.

I'd like to see them carry 4 tackles. The 4 I would like to with are Hankins, Ellis, Bromley and Hamilton. Jenkins is a declining player, he had a BLAH year last year. Also one of his better values is his ability to swing inside and out. But with a projected 6 DE, that value is not marinalized. Why I am I intrigued by Hamilton? I would like another "bigger" tackle to eat some space and Hamilton being on the younger side may have some room to continue to grow and add strength.

I agree that Jenkins is endangered this season.

He's not the kind of player you keep coming off 7-9 and 6-10. You shed age and salary, go young, build up.

On the other hand, everything points to this being a "Win or else" season for the coaches, which may mean they prefer to keep a guy like Jenkins at the expense of a guy who'll be a productive player in 1-2 years, but isn't ready to play in 2015. That would be bad for the franchise. Hope the front office isn't in a similar position.

is interesting that Coughlin singled out Hamilton when he talked to the press at the Combine.

Please read this 2012 interview that Dominique Hamilton gave. The Giants have been following and interested in him for several years.

He was at the Combine in 2012 and lifted the bar 31 times-impressive for a guy 6'5"

He is similar to Ellis- a run stopper only not capable of rushing the passer.

jenkins is safe

the giants do not like to cut guys who agree to paycuts its gentlemen's agreement. jenkins #1 attribute is mobility and that is what spags requires out of his D-Line. he was never a fit in perry's scheme and i'm surprised they signed him
(u do not ask guys like cullen jenkins and damontre moore to hold the line of scrimmage)

that said - if u follow the $$ hes a backup this year.
It's now or never for Hamilton.

He's 26 and has used up his practice squad eligibility. After bouncing around four teams in three years, maybe he's finally ready to play. With some guys who were just bigger and stronger than their opponents in college, it takes time.

If everyone gets through camp and pre-season healthy, the DTs on the opening night roster will most likely be Hankins, Ellis, Bromley and Jenkins. But I almost stopped at, "If everyone gets through camp and pre-season healthy..." Does that ever happen? Besides, Jenkins is pretty close to done. If he hadn't taken a huge pay cut, he'd be gone already. The Giants did guarantee a decent chunk of his reduced 2015 salary, so he seems to have the inside track on the fourth spot. That's a sunk cost, though. It's still cheaper to write off the guarantee and pay a first-year salary if Hamilton wins the spot on merit.

Kuhn is in the mix too, for better or worse. Carlif Taylor almost certainly needs a year on the practice squad.
I generally agree

But Ayers and Selvie could be competing for one spot. If Wynn shows himself capable of being the #2 LDE then one of the two, probably Selvie, could be expendable.
Ayers and Selvie figure to be competing for one spot

Jenkins would figure to be safe given how they normally run the show, but if the youngsters demonstrate they could hold the fort and leave him vulnerable, he probably goes. He was invisible last season and not getting any younger.
I agree 100%...
Mooch82 : 5/22/2015 8:27 am : link
that we should go with 6 DE's and 4 DT's. Posted it on one of the other threads earlier in the week.

People seem adamant that Ayers and Selvie are competing for one spot. If this was the case, why would we have signed Selvie and why would he have come here? We don't often cut guys that we just signed (injuries aside). At least 4 of our DE's (JPP, Wynn, Ayers, Owa) can play inside on passing downs, so to me it makes much more sense to keep 6 DE's and 4 DT's rather than 5 and 5. We almost always keep 10 DL total. Taylor should make the PS.

Just one man's take.
They signed Selvie prior to the draft
JonC : 5/22/2015 8:30 am : link
Owa was not NYG as yet, Selvie is/was a cheap hedge.

Good point. Still think he's the best run stopping DE we have other than JPP. Do you think they should only keep 9 D-linemen? Or do you think they should keep 5 DT's? Is Hamilton your 5th if so? Kuhn is awful, and Taylor is an extremely raw talent that needs a year on the PS.
I'd wager they keep 9 DL
JonC : 5/22/2015 8:41 am : link
and try to stash an extra DT or two on the PS.

Training camp will settle the UDFA DT prospects, but their climb is a steep one.

If they keep 6 DEs, that would lead me to project Jenkins doesn't make the cut, as part of his reps would figure to be at DE.

another thing to

consider: jenkins is a "coughlin guy". coach sees him as a lockerroom leader.

w/kiwi + rolle gone u need some veteran presence, this is all the sudden an incredibly young defense
moore to LB
idiotsavant : 5/22/2015 8:42 pm : link
keep 12 DL and cut even more 'backers. run 5-1-5 all day

or 5-0-6

On the defensive tackle position: “(Kenrick) Ellis is a big human. The young man on our practice squad, (Dominique) Hamilton, is a big human, so I am looking forward to seeing what they can do, too… We realized that big dominating guy in the middle is a good starting point for the D-Line.”

Webster and Kiwi had bad years after there agreement. I hope they don't make a loyalty based decision.ee
Injuries
Greggiant : 5/23/2015 7:52 am : link
They will keep 8 or 9 because of the list you are looking at, you can figure that 1 or 2 of them will get injured.
I don't think there's any Gentlemen's Agreement.
Big Blue Blogger : 5/23/2015 11:24 am : link
Those players have stuck because their reduced salaries made them cost-effective. Kiwanuka entered the 2014 season as the starting LDE (rightly or wrongly). It's not as though he was barely hanging on to a roster spot. Same with Webster in 2013. Small sample, obviously. We'll see what happens this year with Jenkins, Schwartz and Beason.

Other then the kickers
DavidinBMNY : 5/24/2015 6:37 am : link
Jenkins is clearly the oldest guy on the team and by a few years....
The DT rotation is built around Hankins.
Big Blue Blogger : 5/24/2015 8:38 am : link
He can play 1- or 3-technique, or even on the nose. So you can combine him with any of the other DTs. For 2015, Ellis figures to be the primary 1-technique; he will likely start next to Hankins. What happens behind them depends on how fast the younger DTs - especially Bromley - progress, and how badly Jenkins has declined.

Obviously, an injury could throw the whole plan into disarray. If any of the top three DTs gets hurt, Jenkins makes the team. If the injury is to Ellis, Hankins becomes a full-time 1-tech. And if Hankins gets injured, the Giants are basically screwed unless everyone else steps up dramatically.
jenk could go IR with "he has an 'oldness ' "
idiotsavant : 5/24/2015 9:52 am : link
lets hope they show a crap load of variety over and above, the classic 4-3 under and keeping hank at the same spot all year.

I could see hank even at end in some situations...as well as the ends at T in some.

and demontre moore, wearing a 50 linebackers #, allows you to keep another end
