NFT: UNC Sanctions -- Looks like finally imminent

MetsAreBack : 5/22/2015 2:09 pm
not sure why Vegas ever put a line out on UNC basketball's 2015-2016 title chances this coming season. Was there ever a doubt they'd get at least a one year timeout?

Wife's alma mater - as much as we love Roy and that team, they absolutely should pay a price of 2 or 3 years. Much like Syracuse (probably worse), too much shady sh*t has built up over the years.

Not sure about imminent

But it looks like there will be some significant sanctions.
I'll believe it when I see it
Greg from LI : 5/22/2015 2:13 pm : link
If I were a mid-major school facing violations, I'd be very scared right now. It's like Tark said - the NCAA is so mad at Kentucky that they'll give Cleveland St another year of probation.
if the basketball team gets hit with a ban
MookGiants : 5/22/2015 2:15 pm : link
it won't be for 2015-2016 season. It will be for the following year.

The actual penalties won't come down until likely next spring.
and there's
MookGiants : 5/22/2015 2:22 pm : link
zero chance of getting a multi-year ban. You can take that to the bank.

50/50 whether or not the basketball team even gets a year. We'll see. Other sports are likely in for much bigger penalties than the mens basketball program is.

Which is ridiculous, but whatever. Even if Roy finally figured out that it was a bad idea, he still knew exactly what was going on and basketball team participation in the fraud stretches back to Dean Smith.
The BB team..
FatMan in Charlotte : 5/22/2015 2:30 pm : link
is about as equally at fault as the FB team, but Mook's probably right. They will come down hard on FB and spare the BB team which will only strengthen the view that the NCAA is a complete joke of an organization.
and I agree with that as the most likely outcome
Greg from LI : 5/22/2015 2:32 pm : link
Football will get crushed, basketball will get a slap on the wrist. It's the NCAA version of the Wheel of Justice.
I actually
MookGiants : 5/22/2015 2:46 pm : link
think womens basketball is going to get crushed. And if you've read everything that has come out, they are the ones who have committed the most violations by far.

mens basketball did some dumb shit, but were not the biggest culprits on that campus as far as sports go, or even close to it really
But that's only..
FatMan in Charlotte : 5/22/2015 2:49 pm : link
because the things that happened on that campus were so egregious.

Compared to other BB programs that have gotten sanctioned, what UNC did deserves to get them a stiffer penalty than most, including SU.

Illegal tutoring and grade fixing was rampant.
I think
MookGiants : 5/22/2015 2:51 pm : link
they should get exactly what SU got. I'm just not sure they will.

The illegal..
FatMan in Charlotte : 5/22/2015 2:53 pm : link
behavior was more widespread and took place over a longer period of time than SU's.

If they don't get a worse sentence, it will be laughable.
The problem is
MookGiants : 5/22/2015 2:54 pm : link
if specific players do not get ruled ineligible, the NCAA can't do much about the academic side. It's not up to them to determine if classes were too easy. Many non-athletes were in these classes, too.
My guess is the NCAA
Rob in CT/NYC : 5/22/2015 2:56 pm : link
Does something capricious that makes them look foolish...

The men's football team will be the target, as an example. Women's basketball is a tree falling in the forest.
If the NOA
MookGiants : 5/22/2015 2:57 pm : link
do not state impermissible benefits to specific players and those players ruled ineligible, they won't get what Syracuse got.

considering the cuse already proactively
hitdog42 : 5/22/2015 3:18 pm : link
suspended many of the players involved in their issues, some of which hurt their NCAA chances- it would be a total joke for UNC to get less then them...
in my very biased and humbled opinion
at least those funds young

student athletes have their Swahili skills to fall back on.
you really think it will take an entire year to hand out punishment
MetsAreBack : 5/22/2015 4:57 pm : link
mook? the allegations have already been made - UNC has a few months to respond. given how high profile this is I doubt it takes a year.

also the amount of shit the NCAA will take if they let basketball get away with a slap will be heavy. aren't they considering taking lens basketball titles away?? yet in your view they aren't much of a part of this?

I'm guessing the basketball team gets a two year tourney ban by year end and regardless it will be a non stop distraction all year for everyone

not a good situation for vegas' preseason favorite
again - I'll believe it when I see it

If rumors regarding the contents of the NOA are true (no clue if they are), then UNC should be very happy.

MAB, 9 months after NOA is a safe bet for when they come down.

Syracuse received their notice of allegations last May. They did not receive their punishment until early March. Their post-season ban was self-imposed by Syracuse in February.

The NCAA will not ban UNC from the post-season 2 weeks before it starts basically. Unless UNC self imposes one, which they definitely will not for next year, they will be playing in post-season next year. 2016 is the year that could get hit, which is shitty timing considering without the NCAA issue they probably would already have Harry Giles committed, unless they are cleared of any post-season ban before he decides they aren't getting him

is a good article in the Charlotte Observer today. This wasn't just a couple of academic pitfalls. It was an 18-year, sustained and intentional attempt to give kids academic free passes.

How in the world that won't be worse than SU, I'll never know.

the problem is these classes weren't available to only athletes. Is it the NCAA's job to determine whether or not a class is too easy? I don't know
