Miami offensive line coach Art Kehoe has mentored a long line of Hurricanes linemen that graduated to long and successful NFL careers, including Pro Bowlers like Bryant McKinnie and Chris Myers. Kehoe feels the Giants drafted his latest top pupil with the No. 9 pick in the draft. "I'd say talent-wise, he compares with any of them," Kehoe said in a phone interview with NJ Advance Media. "He's a guy, you know what you're getting. He's gonna come there and he's gonna scrap. He's a scrapper, I promise you he's a scrapper. This guy, he just wants to get after it." ... "When we watch film as a staff, we were always kind of amazed," Kehoe said. "You could pull him as a tackle or you could have him come flat in the open field on a kickout on a corner or an outside 'backer, and a lot of times in those situations, the lineman's at a mismatch, and he wasn't. "He's a guy, we'd throw an out route or a quick screen to one of our receivers, either in motion or just lined up out there, and you'd send him out and he'd actually [lay a] lethal block on a corner, safety, an outside 'backer. He matches up well in the open field, which is pretty ridiculous for a guy who's 6-7, 325 pounds." |
I like Flowers and he'll be a player but to expect a rookie to come in and play LT or RT very well is asking a lot.
I had envisioned Flowers learning RT and getting TE support / help early the season.
Now I would have to think Newhouse is our LT over Pugh who will likely be the backup LT. I realize Newhouse isn't very good but he has experience at the position and hopefully he's matured some and learns.
Beatty is just another guy in a long list of Giant misfortunes when it comes to off-season injuries.
Fairly certain TC, Ross, and Reese all said that they project him to play LT in the future.

You haven't ready anything from the Giants that indicates they plan on him being a LT? Since the moment they drafted him they have said that they like him at LT. They have actually discussed him playing LT more than they have RT.
Art seldom gives out compliments unless they're warranted.
If Reese or Coughlin said something about LT, I missed it.
A: We’ll see. A franchise left tackle is a rare commodity. There are not many of those guys around the league and we think this guy has the ability, the upside, the potential, the toughness, the smarts and the competitiveness to be a franchise left tackle for us.
he's raw technique-wise but that is ignoring the positives: we are talking about a young Shawn Andrews-like run blocker. Do u want Eli taking 7step drops all day? of course not. u scheme around his weaknesses early which the WCO is well-prepared to do. he is an aircraft carrier, take ur 3-steps and use his elite run blocking to keep the chains moving. guy's a mutant
Matt, given their respective roles within the organization, I would think Ross calling the guy a potential blue goose OLT would carry the most weight among those 3.
Beatty, after 7 years in the league still has technique issues... I think he's a plus OLT, but still he's a better athlete than OT, IMO, evidenced by how he moves when he plays "defense" after a turnover. The guy is a big cat with really nimble feet, balance, and agility for his size, but he def could sink his hips better vs bull rushes. Actually I think Flowers is a lot like a bigger, stronger version of Beatty, with a more competitive "mean" streak.
I am encouraged by what Kehoe said about Flowers' matchup against Gregory. Both by the observation that he forced Gregory to play over the opposite OT most of the game, and by observing that Flowers "raised his game 2 notches" vs Gregory. So Flowers responds to a challenge... That's great.
