NJ.com: Ereck Flowers' Miami Position Coach

Eric from BBI : Admin : 5/22/2015 4:04 pm
Quote:
Miami offensive line coach Art Kehoe has mentored a long line of Hurricanes linemen that graduated to long and successful NFL careers, including Pro Bowlers like Bryant McKinnie and Chris Myers. Kehoe feels the Giants drafted his latest top pupil with the No. 9 pick in the draft.

"I'd say talent-wise, he compares with any of them," Kehoe said in a phone interview with NJ Advance Media. "He's a guy, you know what you're getting. He's gonna come there and he's gonna scrap. He's a scrapper, I promise you he's a scrapper. This guy, he just wants to get after it."

...

"When we watch film as a staff, we were always kind of amazed," Kehoe said. "You could pull him as a tackle or you could have him come flat in the open field on a kickout on a corner or an outside 'backer, and a lot of times in those situations, the lineman's at a mismatch, and he wasn't.

"He's a guy, we'd throw an out route or a quick screen to one of our receivers, either in motion or just lined up out there, and you'd send him out and he'd actually [lay a] lethal block on a corner, safety, an outside 'backer. He matches up well in the open field, which is pretty ridiculous for a guy who's 6-7, 325 pounds."

Ereck Flowers' college position coach confident he can step in for injured Will Beatty - ( New Window )
It's too bad they didn't address

the questions around Flowers' undeveloped technique, in particular his use of his hands. It could quell many concerns people have about his ultimate ability.
I was stunned to hear of Beatty's injury and 5-6 month healing timelin

I think his loss is a huge, huge blow to our playoff chances.

I like Flowers and he'll be a player but to expect a rookie to come in and play LT or RT very well is asking a lot.

I had envisioned Flowers learning RT and getting TE support / help early the season.

Now I would have to think Newhouse is our LT over Pugh who will likely be the backup LT. I realize Newhouse isn't very good but he has experience at the position and hopefully he's matured some and learns.

Beatty is just another guy in a long list of Giant misfortunes when it comes to off-season injuries.
This article is misleading

First, I haven't read anyting from the giants that indicates they plan on him being a LT long term. The contrary has been the case. Second, the coach doesn't specifically say he is confident Flowers could replace Beatty. He says he expects Flowers to be an excellent pro who will play hard and improve. When he does address LT, he was not aware of Beatty's injury but warned to proceed with much patience if you play him a LT.

Fairly certain TC, Ross, and Reese all said that they project him to play LT in the future.

Quote:
Both Reese and coach Tom Coughlin said Flowers can play either left or right tackle, though Reese admitted “you would think” Flowers’ long-term position is left tackle.

Matt M...that is not correct at all. All of the post-draft comments (including those still archived on the site in the draft section) have the Giants talking about him as a LT.

You haven't ready anything from the Giants that indicates they plan on him being a LT? Since the moment they drafted him they have said that they like him at LT. They have actually discussed him playing LT more than they have RT.
not really enough time

in the college game to really work on Technique, unless you're super dedicated or have a former OL as HC like Ferentz.

Art seldom gives out compliments unless they're warranted.
With what Kehoe commented,

it would be nice to see Flowers out there in front of Vereen on a screen pass situation. Could give him a lot of yards and move the chains.

This is twice, in over a weeks span, you questioned Flowers projection at LT. This is unlike you. Do your research. The Giants see him as our future LT.
There has been no definitive comments about him being a LT
Matt M. : 5/23/2015 11:47 am : link
now or in the future. What has been prevalent has been mention of the need to correct technique, which lends itself a lot more to RT than LT. Plus, most of the scouting reports, for the same issue, have projected him as a RT right out of the gate and long term.

If Reese or Coughlin said something about LT, I missed it.
Plus
Matt M. : 5/23/2015 11:52 am : link
this is the same article posted in a thread yesterday. His coach didn't say he was confident about replacing Beatty at LT. He said he was confident Flowers could step in at T (not LT) and be productive. He has a great attitude and physical ability to be more athletic than most tackles. He was confident he could step in now and play. But, when asked specifically about LT he wasn't aware about Beatty's injury and said the Giants would need to proceed with a lot of patience.
Here you go..

Mark Ross

Quote:
Q: Do you see him as a guy who could give Will Beatty a run for his money also?

A: We’ll see. A franchise left tackle is a rare commodity. There are not many of those guys around the league and we think this guy has the ability, the upside, the potential, the toughness, the smarts and the competitiveness to be a franchise left tackle for us.
Thanks I missed that
Matt M. : 5/23/2015 12:00 pm : link
I'm still not convinced by one quote from Ross about potential, as opposed to Coughlin or Reese. But, that is more than I had previously seen.
im of the camp

he will make us forget will beatty very quickly.
he's raw technique-wise but that is ignoring the positives: we are talking about a young Shawn Andrews-like run blocker. Do u want Eli taking 7step drops all day? of course not. u scheme around his weaknesses early which the WCO is well-prepared to do. he is an aircraft carrier, take ur 3-steps and use his elite run blocking to keep the chains moving. guy's a mutant

It's not one quote...Coughlin and Reese have been interviewed on WFAN, the NFL Network, etc. about this.

Matt, given their respective roles within the organization, I would think Ross calling the guy a potential blue goose OLT would carry the most weight among those 3.

Beatty, after 7 years in the league still has technique issues... I think he's a plus OLT, but still he's a better athlete than OT, IMO, evidenced by how he moves when he plays "defense" after a turnover. The guy is a big cat with really nimble feet, balance, and agility for his size, but he def could sink his hips better vs bull rushes. Actually I think Flowers is a lot like a bigger, stronger version of Beatty, with a more competitive "mean" streak.

I am encouraged by what Kehoe said about Flowers' matchup against Gregory. Both by the observation that he forced Gregory to play over the opposite OT most of the game, and by observing that Flowers "raised his game 2 notches" vs Gregory. So Flowers responds to a challenge... That's great.
