If you're in a rut, getting yourself to just do it the first few times will be brutal. It will feel like the last thing in the world that you want to do.
Once you bust through that, you'll be kicking yourself for not doing it sooner.
Doctors can be useful for things like this. If you're not ready/able to take that step, there's one thing you can easily and cheaply cross off the list - drink a bunch of water (a glass or two per hour) for two days -- make sure it's not a kidney infection, which can present as lower back pain.
1. Watch your sleep patterns. Don't fall into the thinking that because you're tired you need more sleep. This is likely a big mistake. Sleeping too much can literally lead one to be even more sleepy. The trick here is to NOT allow yourself to sleep in no matter what. You can go to bed as early as you like, but do NOT let yourself sleep in.
2. Exercise. I recommend doing it in the morning, especially if you want energy for your day. Everything that's recommended seems solid to me - stretching, hydrating. You want to spend at least 20-25 minutes minimum working up a sweat.
3. Diet. Make sure you are eating healthy foods. Stay away from fast food. Stay far away from caffeinated or alcoholic beverages, and watch out for sugars. My life changed significantly when a doctor cut carbs from my mornings entirely. Not even a half-slice of toast until the afternoon for me, and I do great on a pure protein morning. I also take fish oil in the morning and vitamin D.
4. See a doctor - especially if your own attempts at diet, sleep and exercise fail. Could be something that doesn't get fixed on its own.
Good luck - you can break the cycle and get your energy back.
Go to a doctor to examine the medical possibilities.
Be aware of your environment and the changes that have occurred recently. Your back problem could be anything from a new pillow to a new desk chair or a car seat adjustment.
And maybe you are tired because your bio clock hasn't adjusted to the time change.
I'd advise "Eli" to have a real doctor diagnose his back because so many things can go wrong with it.
I had bulging discs since I was 30 and in pain all the time (lower back). Over the years nothing really helped.
I was finally prescribed a Tens Unit and my back has been pain free for 2 years now. I'll soon be 55 and my back feels as good as it did in my 20's! Tens Unit Example - ( New Window )
but some have noticed that quite a few lower back problems can be resolved by developing a stronger core (lower body strength and fitness). Unless you have a serious spinal problem. Stronger core will minimize the stress on that lower back due to stronger quads, et al.
One simple test to see where your core might be, can you get up out of a chair without pushing off the armrests? In other words align yourself with good posture in a chair and use your legs only to get up out of the chair.
instructor you can find. If yoga, try to find a class with lots of hot babes attending regularly. At the very least, you'll feel less tired during class!
I had a problem a few months back and thought it was my back. ended up being my SI joint in my hip. I did the exercise 3 to 4 times a day than bout inversion table $120.00. Got right back on track and ran a 1/2 Marathon relay 6 weeks after I could not walk.
...payoffs for time invested that I've experienced for my lower back. If lower back pain is constant, you have to stretch regularly to combat it; there really aren't many options. I do a regular golf stretch routine, but I mixed in a bunch of others that I found have the greatest impact on how I feel (eg, bench pirformis stretch).
Dealing with nagging pain takes a lot out of you, make no mistake. Good luck.

good luck staying focused in Yoga classes. The good ones always have a dozen or so bums that will keep your head on a swivel.

Stretch and hydrate afterward
I use a foam roller after I exercise as well. I have found that to be helpful.

I'm sleeping great, but I haven't noticed the increased energy yet. On the contrary, basic stuff like yard work is killing me right now.
