I have a feeling Ben Edwards will be tough to cut

Eric from BBI : Admin : 5/23/2015 7:18 am
Probably nothing but wishful thinking because I'm only basing this on YouTube highlights, interviews, and how he did at the mini-camp, but Edwards just seems like a guy who will have great chemistry with Eli Manning to me...a kind of Wes Welker type that Eli would look to if he ever gets on the field with him.

He's not big and his timed speed isn't great, but he just looks very quick and seems to play much faster than his time.

Hard to see how they can keep him given the numbers at the position.

Ben Edwards (#6, WR, University of Richmond) Highlights

You can look at it that way
robbieballs2003 : 5/23/2015 7:41 am : link
Or you can also say it will be hard to keep him too. He looks like he has potential but is his game going to translate to the NFL? Watching his route running, he runs into defenders too many times. Yes, in the NFL you are not allowed to hit the receiver after five yards but it happens all the time. He is going to have to get better in that area. I think he is a perfect PS player.

Also, does he play specials? Because if he doesn't than I am definitely keeping Corey Washington over him. We have Donnell but after Donnell, Washington is probably our best red zone target in terms of height and ability to go get the ball. I'm talking more jump ball situations. Beckham and Cruz are obviously better overall in their ability to get free with their route running but Washington adds something we really don't have at the position.

By the way, I know it is only highlights but that Richmond QB seems to put the ball on the money.
practice squad at best if you ask me

Does not look as muscular as those New England guys, yet.

I was thinking that, too. The kid always seems to put it where it counts. ANybody know who he is?
Who would he "unseat" iyo?

He got a minicamp invitation from the Chiefs.
Seems, given what we have at WR
BillT : 5/23/2015 9:35 am : link
He's a great fit on the PS. He could outplay Washington but that's what he'd have to do at the least.
For me the jury's still out on Washington
PEEJ : 5/23/2015 9:40 am : link
Yes, he made some good plays in pre-season against second-teamers. Sometimes, these guys turn into Victor Cruz, sometimes they turn into Sean Bennett
Almost

every year, at least one UDFA forces his way onto the roster. We have a lot of JAGs at a lot of positions, including WR. Beckham, Cruz, Randle, and D. Harris are the only locks IMO, and Cruz might still start on the PUP. Everyone else is fighting for a roster spot.

Edwards runs great routes, and is tough, gritty, player. I see the Wes Welker comparisons. But nobody drafted him, he has no downfield burst, and has a concussion history. My guess is PS, but there is going to be a big veteran purge at many positions IMO. That gives UDFAs like LaCosse and a real chance to make the 53. Edwards might be another.

Here is some information about him.

article found by Defenderdawg this morning...

Quote:
"My mindset is that I don't have any days off," said Edwards, a wide receiver who signed a free agent contract following the Giants recent rookie minicamp in East Rutherford, N.J. "I'm going to make absolutely sure I embrace and enjoy this process and work harder than I ever have in my life."

....

"There are no guarantees, I mean I could literally be cut tomorrow, so I have to work my butt off to take advantage of every opportunity," Edwards said. "I have to study my playbook on the weekends, catch everything thrown to me, bust my butt in the weight room and show them I'm in great shape.

"Even if I make it to training camp, I'll probably come in at No. 12 out of 12 on the depth chart. I'm the underdog."

....

"I'm the underdog, like a Julian Edelman," Edwards said of the similarly sized receiver who went from seventh-round draft choice to a star for the Super Bowl champion New England Patriots. "He's a guy who had to grind it out to find a way to get in to the league.

"He fought his way through the practice squad and the special teams, similar to what I'll have to do. It's a long road ahead, and I'll have to keep working my butt off, but at the same time I do believe I can help this team and play in this league."

Can you imagine Victor and a Wes Welker type in the slots. Considering the o-line issues (on paper right now) a quick pass offense is what we need. Soften them up w/ the short passing game and then 50 yard TD to OBJ.
you pissed and moaned for a week

Over the wr we drafted over separation fears but you think the small, slow guy who is useless on specials is going to be hard to cut.

You can only tell so much from YouTube, but the "highlights" of Davis show a guy who doesn't have a lot of quickness to me. Edwards looks very quick.
Davis
AcidTest : 5/23/2015 10:21 am : link
and Edwards are totally different WRs. Edwards is a quick, underneath guy. Davis is a big possession WR who is going to win with size and strength, not quickness. Hence the concerns about whether he can separate, although he might do better than most think in that regard because his QB was so poor at UConn. But most likely he's going to be "boxing out" defenders. That isn't Edwards.
isn't it obvious what happens?

In the Giants offense....
damdevs : 5/23/2015 10:42 am : link
Edwards seems like the perfect fit when we go 3-4 wide.

Not saying he's going to beat out anyone for playing time right away, but in my eyes he seems like the type of WR the McAdoo wants in his offense vs a Randal type WR.

How could anyone make that assessment and post it with a straight face. RR just put up over 900 yards last season. Very hard to take some posts serious.
too much

Love for Corey Washington. Either one of those new wr can take that spot.

We're going to see some amazing battles, at some very key skill positions, for players vying to make our top 53.
Wes Welker comparisons are lazy and pretty
Rob in CT/NYC : 5/23/2015 12:49 pm : link
Much stop at "undrafted smallish white WR".

Welker was a great college player - WR, RB and returner - he had 1,300 total yards as both a junior and senior against real competition (Big 12).
He sounds a lot like
Simms11 : 5/23/2015 12:55 pm : link
Soup Harris IMO. Harris would probably have the edge, if healthy.
Dwayne Harris & Preston Parker are good slot guys
GeorgeAdams33 : 5/23/2015 2:26 pm : link
Especially if Cruz has a setback, I see these two being used in the slot should they be on the active roster.

The guy that I would like to see develop as a slot receiver, along with Edwards, is RB-Akeem Hunt out of Purdue. He is small for a RB, but he was used extensively in the passing game. At 5-10 190 with long arms, good hands, and 4.38 speed he could develop as a receiver and later if he can put on 10 pounds we could use him more out of the backfield.

Another guy is Will Tye. This offense needs a move TE/H-Back to develop and this guy has some real talent. I would love to see Adrien Robinson win the TE job and for Tye to be the H-Back. Hynoski is great as the FB, but we need more intermediate receiving threats on the field. With Vareen at RB along with Jennings we should see Eli getting rid of the ball quicker.
I like Edwards too.
TC : 5/23/2015 2:41 pm : link
He's damn quick out of his stance and blows by defenders for the first 10 or 15 yards.

Without a LT, I want the ball out of Eli's hands at the count of 1! If McAdoo is serious about building an "O" based on personnel, I hope we see a lot of quick-hitter shorter routes and Edwards might be perfect in such a scheme.

Yeah --- that has certainly worked out in the past -- let's see... last time this happened - it was the injured Jake Ballard that Reese "exposed" -- and when Little Bill swooped in and signed Ballard there was an epic BBI meltdown. Reese was accused of blatant incompetence by a large number of vocal BBIers. As it turns out he didn't even make it out of training camp to the Patriots final 53.
One big thing working against him is....
MOOPS : 5/23/2015 5:15 pm : link
he shares number 6 with Chris Boswell.
actually
jtfuoco : 5/23/2015 5:42 pm : link
he reminds me more of a Brandon Stokley. who might have had some success here with Eli if he didn't get injured.

He is the guy who thought Flipper Anderson ran into the tunnel at the end of the FIRST HALF of the devastating playoff loss to the Rams in 89.
I was there
GeorgeAdams33 : 5/24/2015 2:34 am : link
Flipper ran out and never came back. Game over. I still remember Sheldon White getting beat like a drum, but poor Mark Collins should've just laid down on the turf being that his ankle was broken. The silence was deafening.

I was also at the "Tom Flynn on Al Toon game" (game over-no playoffs) and the "LT Blocks Eagle FG, Clyde Simmons stumbles down the field for the TD" game just a few weeks earlier. I thought I was a jinx.

That team should've won more than they did in 88' & 89' so it was really great that they won it all in 90' while stopping the 49ers "threepeat"
.
I was also at the 1993
GeorgeAdams33 : 5/24/2015 3:32 am : link
season finale against the Cowboys.

Definitely a jinx. LOL
Unfortunately, yes....

is a long shot to stick a second year, as far as I am concerned. Parker is a below-average player. It's not like there are not spots open. You have the first three, then Harris, who can be considered as a return specialist in terms of roster formation. Would not be surprised if 2 rookies made it.
in that type of WR, which we could use
idiotsavant : 5/24/2015 10:17 am : link
look for players that can slide sideways or change direction while moving at top speed and make a play.

edwards seems to have that, possibly more welker than cruz, I would try to keep the kid.

conversley, teams get hung up on the whole 'long pass jump ball tall' thing, get 5 of those types, and never win games. a variety helps one use the whole playbook and set up short and medium against long and so forth

It's not my fault you don't understand what I'm talking about. I'm not actually comparing or saying one WRs is better than the other ....just types...like what Edwards brings to the table and what Randal can do. If you can't see that they're very different WRs then I can't help you.

In my opinion I think McAdoo would rather prefer an Edwards style/type WRs over a WR like Randal. It seems like it would be a better fit for our Offense when we go 3 or 4 wide.
Give me a break.
