NFT: WW2 question

Steve L : 5/23/2015 6:50 pm
After France fell the British told the French fleet to join them. The British went to Algiers and gave an ultimatum which the French turned down. British fleet sinks six ships. I know there was a pro German government in France (Vichey) but why didn't the French fleet join the British? They could have sailed off and helped.

I know we have a lot of "buffs" here so....(cue Seinfeld jokes)

Their top generals and politicians were Vichy. Thus the fleet was Vichy. They came around eventually but European politics of the time was use to changing loyalties. The British, US and the allies saw it as the good guys vs. the bad guys and were right. They just, at that point, saw it a a new political alignment.

was not a lot of love between the British and French at this point and Vichy was a pro-German government. Though the resistance wasn't server, the Vichy troops did resist some of the American landings in 1942.

to fire on the French fleet at Mers El Kebir; the loss of so many French sailors was a big propoganda coup for Abwehr and was one of a string of events early in the war that undermined confidence in Britain's leadership and ability to hold off Germany, including in the US.

That map brought back a lot of memories just now: rode my BMW R72 across North Africa during the spring and summer of 1972.

"Going to war without France is like going deer hunting without an accordion"

Trying to figure out France during war time is like a blind man solving a Rubic's cube. Although, the way our current President is leading the greatest military in the world as it burns to the ground, I think the French are stronger than us right now.

Welcome to BBI. We sorely needed another loon.
Boy, invading Iraq to get those WMDs sure helped a lot, though,

mavric. Didn't destabilize a whole region, as his father had predicted...nah, Obama's the bad guy. People believe anything they want, regardless of facts.
Capitulation.

Nobody said that about WWI. French lost over a million men. Contributed more to that victory than anyone else.
World War II In Color

I watched a show yesterday called World War II In Color. It is a really good show, imo and colorizing the footage really adds something special to it.

There are 13 episodes, one hour long each. I saw episode 1. It was the backstory that led to WW II.

For me the most interesting part was what happened between 1922 and 1936. Italy’s economy was a disaster so in 1922 they took a chance and elected Mussolini and he puts everybody back to work on infrastructure projects. This is similar to what the US did during the depression with the WPA, only Mussolini did it on a larger scale (larger with respect to the size of the country). The Italian economy improves right away and Mussolini becomes extremely popular.

In 1929 the great depression is started in the US and it keeps getting worse until 1933 when FDR is elected. When the US economy started to tank, it pulled down the other industrialized countries as well but Italy was perceived to handle the downturn much better than the other countries and Italy become a role model for the other nations. When Hitler was elected in 1933, he does exactly what Mussolini did. Germany in 1933 had 48% unemployment and Hitler puts everybody back to work on infrastructure programs. The German economy starts getting better immediately and Hitler becomes incredibly popular.

Unfortunately we all know that Mussolini and Hitler went on to become two of the greatest monsters in the history of the world.
