Gavin Cecchini coming in like a freight train
Dom Smith 6 multiple hit games in a row and has at least 1xbh in each game
Ahmed Rosario heating up
Michael Conforto hitting again
But the reality is he would just be graduating college and won't turn 22 till December. He has matured physically and for AA he is more than holding his own hitting .307 with 4 HR
is that they seem to pick a lot of high baseball IQ types. They haven't picked a lot of guys who are more athlete than baseball player, instead opting for upside by picking guys who were younger (or older than normal) but had high BBIQ's. Cecchini, Smith, Nimmo fit into the younger category, Plawecki, Reynolds, Conforto into the older. Thus far none of those guys have had meteoric ascensions or breakouts, and maybe none ever will, but they've all steadily been able to adjust and improve and take advantage of what they could at each level. Pretty impressive balance sheet of draft picks succeeding.

Here's my issue. Sometimes you have to take a risk on the athletic ability more that the "BBIQ" factor. I don't really thing the BBIQ means as much in baseball as it does in other sports, such as Basketball. The fact remains that Sandy has had 4 drafts, all with quality picks, and nothing to show for it (so far). Sure, time will tell on the more recent picks, but so far Sandy's draft history leaves a lot to be desired. They just seem, safe.
When I think of the draft, I look for players that have the athletic ability to be a star player. That's something that can't be taught. And Sandy's had the high pick selections to do just that. I don't know, I just fear that we are destined to have drafted a bunch of bench players under this FOs regime. Except Conforto...he's the dude that can change my mind, lol.
are pure projections. A guy like Conforto is a safer bet than a Cecchini Smith or Nimmo. Patience is key with High Schoolers, that doesn't mean that time will make a bust a non bust, but my own expectations get out of whack if a 18 year doesn't play like Bryce Harper from Day 1
They've added athletic upside guys too, just not in higher rounds Â
Seems like a lot of the fliers they've taken in trades have been those more toolsy types (Herrera, Buccera) and IFAs (Rosario). Puello is one of those toolsy guys. Probably some others who are a little deeper that I'm not as familiar with. None of us know how their strategy is going to play out, but I like the idea of assembling a core group of guys whose biggest strength is grinding out good AB's. Red Sox, Cardinals and Giants have won a lot of guys who fit that description over the past decade. Obviously it would be great to get guys with the upside of Trout or McCutchen or Stanton, but there's only a handful of those guys and usually you're trading off other skills. Everyone is looking for those guys.
either. But let's not pretend that haven't had or don't have amazing players on their team. They aren't successful just because they are "grinders." They have the right mentality/coaching, develop their players AND go out and sign the players they need. And I'm not talking about the bargain basement shopping or past their prime players that the Mets love to get.
I like to be positive but it's like déjà by. I mean asking people to pay money to seeTejada, Cecciliani, Campbell, Recker, Granderson, Cudyyer,Murphy, Plawecki is torture. Wright is an albatross at this point. I need Alderson to do something, anything. This is just brutal.

Headhunter. I guess your off the Cuddyer bandwagon now
change. It's not that they are losing, it's how awful the product is. Yeah I thought Cudyyer and Granderson were going to contribute, shows how little I know. This team has no identity and on Memorial Day they look like they are going through the motions.

Wow. Never thought I would see this day. I assume this is just frustration HH? We rely on you to keep most of us positive around here.
The problem is they have no star everyday players Â
Maybe Duda qualifies, but the rest of the lineup is a bunch of JAGs. No shock the team only wins when Duda hits. Granderson and Cuddyer were fine signings in a bubble. Reasonable prices for solid citizen role players. But for a team bereft of any non-pitching star power or identity they're like rearranging deck chairs on the titanic. Almost like when the Giant teams of the 90's were great on defense and every year we'd hope some 3rd tier offensive player like Gary Brown would make a difference. Ike Hilliard is going to give Danny Kannell the weapon he needs to hoist a lombardi trophy.
Everyday star players are almost impossible to find in the MLB today, so it's not like they haven't put in effort, I'm sure they have. But in the 4 years of this regime far too many have changed teams and far too much money has been spent on FA by this franchise (82M on the aforementioned COFers alone) to justify not having acquired a single everyday player worth paying to see. We're clutching the Gee/Niese/Murphys of the world, refusing to trade them unless we get "our price" and meanwhile they're costing an aggregate 20M+ in salary, for what? If we are going to spend like a small market team can we please at least get some bang for the bucks that we do spend? If you add up the salary of our 5 leading WAR guys you'd probably have less than $10M. In hindsight they should have dealt Wheeler to AZ for J. Upton, or something like that. But obviously hindsight is 20/20.
Hard to blame anything other than bad luck for what's happened to his career in the last few years. He was a durable, hard working, as reliable as they come star who signed a reasonable contract and watched his prime years get obliterated by bad luck.
but the feeling I get is that we've seen this before. I don't think that anything will change unless something is done. Now playing the Phillies and Marlins at home couldn't come at a better time, but even if they go say 5-2, they have to shake this mess up. You cannot start Recker, Ceciliani, Tejada, Mayberry Campbell and call yourself improved. Cudyyer and Granderson are flops and Murphy is so one dimensional that if doesn't hit .295 he is a liability. I can't remember more than 3 big 2 out RISP timely hit. I do remember about 20 ground ball DPs they hit into. Collins doesn't pressure the other team by hitting and running, he just sits in the dugout and looks like he is posing for a picture of what a Manager should look like. This is a very seriously flawed team and if they don't get great pitching they have no shot
put is not a prospect. TJ Rivera is hitting .414 at La Vegas but I guess they are better off with Campbell and Ceciliani because TJ is not a prospect all he does is hit
The Mets will be stuck wAiting for Wright to come back Â
But we need to do something with this line up.. When we signed Cuddyer its was like signing Jason Bay all over again... and I know Flores is well like here on BBI but the kid is not a ss. We need a consistent bat and a consistent ss.
I never liked the Cuddyer/Bay comparison, at least not yet Â
Its only been 41 games for Cuddyer...let's give it a little more time before you claim it an utter failure.
Losing is infectious. And everyone in the lineup is feeding off of each other's failures right now. We are way past a cold streak...this is a tailspin. And this coaching staff...as usual...has no idea what to do. With the pitching we have, this lineup should still be able to win some games. But for the love of everything holy, is it so damn hard for this manager to get aggressive and create some luck? Collins is, by for and away, the absolute worst manager I have ever seen on a baseball team. He has lived up to his loser history and just added to that list at the expense of the Mets.
Elmer Fudd needs to go. It was a mistake keeping him LAST YEAR. This year is just a mind-boggling inept decision. Sandy is not exempt from blame either. How long is Sandy going to wait to build an offense around this amazing pitching? Just long enough until it's too late? Or maybe he's just waiting for a desperate team to knock on his door so he can take advantage and "win" another trade. Yeah, that happens all the time.

Probably because of some sabermetrics. It feels like Sandy has a set idea of a guy based on his stats preferences. I think with the pitching staff they have they really should be looking towards putting the best defense behind them. Then at the positions where you expect your offense to come from plug in guys who can hit consistently. It is such a waste to have such a poor defensive team supporting such a fantastic young pitching staff. It would be one thing if we were giving up having a great defense because they were outscoring most teams but they are doing they exact opposite; subpar defense with horrible offense. Just not what you want with great pitching.

Well, for one thing, he's only been in Vegas a week so that 414 isn't from a lot of at bats. Granted he hit well last year as a whole. But he doesn't have a lot of power, doesn't walk much, doesn't steal many bases. His average has to hold up in the majors, as that's really the only productive part of him.
Also note he's not on the 40 man roster, and he was on the DL until about 2 weeks ago
My understanding is they are grooming him this year to be a utility player by playing him at many positions.
Who do the Mets have in the single A level that is promising, esp position players?
Not a very stacked team, more potential future role players than potential future starters.
Extended spring training, and rumored to be PTBNL to Padres.

Unless something drastic happens, this Mets offense unfortunately will rank in the bottom of the league

what they need is a really good young 4th OF type that you can rotate 3 of for 2 spots as Lagares needs to play every day for his defense alone.
