NFT: Final Sunday in the Premier League

dpinzow : 5/24/2015 10:33 am
The only matches that really matter since the title and Top 4 are all sewn up are the relegation places

Hull and Man U are scoreless but Hull have 2 goals disallowed (both offside, and unfortunately both legit calls).

Newcastle and West Ham are also scoreless at St. James' Park.

Hull must win or they get relegated. If they win then Newcastle must win too or they go down because their goal difference is worse if they draw (both Newcastle and Hull would end on 37 pts but the Geordies have a -25 GD and Hull's GD wouldn't be any worse than -17)
Liverpool laying a complete egg in Gerrard's last game

down 4-0 to Stoke of all teams. A year ago Brendan Rodgers almost won the title and now there are rumors that he will get fired with Benitez returning to Anfield. If Brendan returns he'll be on a short leash next year
City up 1-0 at the half

On what is likely Lampard's last goal in sky blue. Aguero may have had a hat trick inbthe first half if not for a near miss and two excellent saves by the Southampton goaltender.
Newcastle scores

Sissoko might have just scored the goal that keeps the Geordies in the Prem. Not sure they deserve it after their last 2 months but the table doesn't lie
Fellaini sent off for Man U...terrible challenge

Man U down to 10 and Hull's chances improve a bit, but they still need to score and hope West Ham equalizes against Newcastle
Newcastle had a 4 on 1
dpinzow : 5/24/2015 11:42 am : link
and didn't score...unreal. There will be a shitload of injury time at Hull but will they already be relegated
Gutierrez, who beat cancer earlier in the year

scores the second for Newcastle! A terrific shot and Newcastle is just about safe
Newcastle 2 West Ham 0...Geordies safe

Hull 0, Man United 0, Hull relegated

The other interesting storyline is whether Rodgers gets sacked at Anfield as Liverpool were thrashed by Stoke 6-1. The Reds finished 6th and they want someone to pay for it

Amazing how things change in a year. I'm afraid it's going to be some time until we see them again in the big time. I do admit that it's going to be fun watching Bournemouth next year.
Liverpool haven't given up 6 goals in a match
dpinzow : 5/24/2015 12:33 pm : link
since Arsenal beat them 6-3 in a cup match in 2007 and haven't lost by 5 goals in a match since 1958
Utterly disappointing season for Everton

after the promise of last year.
I think they QPR made a mistake with Ramsey

I hope I'm wrong but I'm just not sold on him. They will lose a ton of players now, a complete rebuild, starting with Austin. I hope he goes to a team that can actually get him some chances. I think they could follow a Fulham type swoon, just trying to hand on in the Championship.
Falcao sent back to Monaco

Manchester United paid 19m for four goals. I hope he can resurrect his career somewhere - it just wasnt the environment for a player coming off a knee injury. Wouldnt be surprised to see Di Maria and Van Persie sold in the offseason.

The difference with Fulham is that they don't have a deep youth system, they will have to spend some money in the offseason. There are a few youth players who can contribute, but their setup isn't good. I don't mind them spending money, but just in the right places. They will probably make some good money by selling Austin, Fer, Caulker, Green, and you can't forget about the 20% transfer clause for Sterling. Lots of dead weight coming off the books also.

I'm not sold on Ramsay either, but it wasn't his team. He had to work with what he had, plus a lot of devastating injuries. Harry left too many holes. Sandro injured all season and the Fer injury really hurt, just when he was finding form. I don't know if fitness was a huge issue, but they a lot of points on the board. In reality, Harry should have been sacked after the Liverpool game, when they still had a chance.

Rumor has it that Pogba is Man U's #1 target and that they'd sell off Falcao and Di Maria at a loss to finance a Pogba transfer. Man U is also losing De Gea to Real most likely so they're probably working on some kind of deal with Bale who has fallen out of favor with their finicky fans

Carlo Ancelloti out at Real Madrid.
In Spain they have Rafa Benitez as the favorite for the Madrid job

There's also a rumor of them going after Aguero. That would be the typical foolish Florentino signing. They need to reinforce the defensive midfield if they don't think Illarramendi is up to the job, because Kroos isn't what they need there. The smart move would be to get the Polish midfielder from Sevilla. He's a beast.
Given the

way that Pogba/United ended, I'd be shocked if he ended up back there. Barcelona or Madrid (or Paris) seem like more likely outcomes.

It'll also be interesting to see if Klopp takes any time off.

Where do you think Klopp ends up?
I have't a clue...
Tim in Capital City : 5/25/2015 10:38 pm : link
...given the egg Liverpool laid on Sunday, I would have thought that they were a good bet, but the latest reports are that Rodgers is safe. I don't really see Klopp going to a team outside the top of each league. Arsenal, Chelsea, City, and United apparently aren't hiring. Add Liverpool to that list, and I don't see him going to the PL right now.

No Barca/Madrid, and I don't see him going to La Liga.

Pep isn't leaving Bayern...

It's no surprise to me that Klopp is now saying he might take a bit of a hiatus.

Kroos was a really strange signing at the time, and it still is. The whole Kroos/Alonso swap just didn't add up.
Kroos is a good player,
Go Terps : 5/25/2015 11:32 pm : link
he's just not a defensive midfielder. He's better a little farther forward, but he isn't as good in that role as Isco or James. But Real always splurges after a World Cup.

There was a rumor in Spain that Man I was ready to offer €200 million for Ronaldo and Bale. They should jump all over that if that's true. Whether you like Ronaldo or hate him, his knee is becoming a problem.
