Bedard MMQB: Memorial Day and Football
The NFL and veterans have been intertwined since World War II. Here's our own moment of remembrance, plus notes on Tom Brady's next steps, another lawsuit pitting ex-players against the league and much more from our guest columnist

"I think the Giants are fooling themselves if they think the pectoral muscle injury suffered by left tackle Will Beatty, which reportedly could keep him out until at least October, won’t have huge ramifications. Beatty had developed himself into a very capable left tackle, and now the Giants are left with either Justin Pugh (who underwhelmed so much at right tackle he had been penciled in at guard ) or Ereck Flowers, the ninth overall pick out of Miami earlier this month. I recently spent the weekend at the Coaches of Offensive Line (COOL) Clinic in Cincinnati, and the reviews on Flowers were not good. “Some of the worst technique I’ve ever seen in a player drafted that high,” said one veteran NFL line coach. “He played for one of the best coaches, Art Kehoe, and his technique was terrible,” said another coach. “That tells me he doesn’t take coaching well. That’s a big problem because all of the recent tackles have struggled making the transition. It now takes them until Year 3. You can thank the spread and the [collective bargaining agreement] for that.”

Pearce NFP: All remaining free agent team ( Offense)
"Offensive Tackle: Jake Long: A former first overall pick, talent isn’t the question with Long––it is his health. The 30-year old hasn’t played a full 16-game schedule since 2010 and is currently rehabbing a torn ACL, which was suffered in week eight. This is the second year in a row that he has torn his ACL, causing teams to stay away. Once healthy, Long should sign a contract with playing time incentives and little guaranteed money.
Offensive Tackle: Anthony Collins: One of the prized free agents in Tampa Bay’s 2014 haul, the 29-year old Collins lasted just one season with the Buccaneers, in what was his first season as a full-time starter. He fell from Pro Football Focus’ (PFF) 23rd rated offensive tackle in 2013 to 63rd in 2014. With the ability to play either tackle position, most teams would love to have him on their roster, but he is likely holding out for a starting position.

Guard: Justin Blalock: Since entering the league in 2007, Blalock has started 125 out of a possible 128 games for Atlanta, the only team he has ever played for. Released in a salary cap move, the 31-year old has been a top 30 guard the last two seasons according to PFF. He isn’t a top guard, but he could be a quality starter for a team.

The Cowboys article

on the evolving nature of linebacking play is interesting. Their position coach basically says that the run centric, heavy-legged, 2-down plugger is extinct. All your backers have to be able to move like weakside OLB's in the sub. It goes without saying that it is harder to find these guys. Also their nickel corner last year played something like 38 more snaps than any linebacker so their offseason emphasis on adding linebackers (they have 11 right now) might seem couner-intuitive, but they explain it very well.
This is bull

He was "penciled in at guard" only because he's talented and versatile. Pugh is a talented OT who struggled through tough year injury-wise. I think he's a lock to start at LT where he played and was a star in college.

Yes. Pugh is a LOT. They should open the position to competition between Flowers & him. I like them with Pugh at LOT & Flowers right, but that is just me. The thing about playing through injuries, instead of simply shutting it down until the player is "all better" is that, other than LT, players suffer a drop-off in performance when they go out there less than 109%. Their reward is to be pissed on by the faithful.

For Eli's sake, I'd give Pugh the OLT slot and let Flowers cut his teeth at ORT(at this level) and see what transpires

Yes the timing of the injury does allow them to explore options & experiment. Pugh has seen NFL game-speed for 2 seasons. It is also wise to get a look at multiple position changes in case they take an injury or two.....or three.....

I think if we can figure out Pugh is and should be the LOT the Giants staff can, too. I'm not worried.
