Jordan Raanan Point on WR Marcus Harris

If he hadn't suffered a season-ending injury in the final preseason game, he would have been starting by Week 3, at least, before Beckham returned. One assistant coach told me he was their best wide receiver in training camp and preseason, better than Cruz and Rueben Randle. It will be cruel if he never appeared in a regular season game for the Giants.

How big a loss is Will Beatty and Brett Jones realistic at guard? | Giants mailbag - ( New Window )
also on Brett Jones playing at guard...

Consider this a long, long, longshot. When the Giants signed Jones a front office executive with an NFC team told me he was short, small and strictly a center. At 6-2, 315 pounds I didn't understand ... until seeing Jones at rookie minicamp. He was easily the shortest offensive lineman on the field and didn't look 6-2. He has small arms and is likely too small to play guard at the NFL level, which is why the Giants had him taking snaps exclusively at center right now. Jones will get some looks at guard, but considering where he's coming from (the CFL), where he needs to get and his size, it would be unfair to place that kind of expectation on him.
That is a pretty interesting comment on Harris

The more you hear about the WR's the more you think we may keep 6, or possibly 7.

Mortal Locks:
OBJ
Cruz
Randle
D. Harris

Likely:
M. Harris

Plausible:
Washington
Parker

That and DE seem to be our deepest 2 units.
What was the injury again, an ACL?

Let's hope he gets the opportunity to show what he can truly do. I'll be rooting for him.

I thought for sure Jones would be an immediate starter and Pro Bowl selection.
Marcus Harris

looked great last summer. If he returns as being the same player, pre-injury, pencil him in as a Giant in '15.
Agreed about Marcus Harris
BillT : 5/25/2015 10:11 am : link
When they lost Harris and Cooper on the same day last year I had a feeling it was going to be a bad year injury wise and it never stopped. Harris is a legit rotational player for the outside spots at WR. There are good players on this team like he and Cooper and Schwartz and Ayers and Beason that can make a real difference.
Parker plays specials and pitched in last year
Andy in Halifax : 5/25/2015 10:11 am : link
but I think signing Harris really negates the value of Parker. I think Parker and Washington are going to battle for the last spot and my guess is Parker fails to make it.
This is the most talented group

The trouble for Parker is that he's very similar skill wise to D. Harris. How many of those kind of players does the team need.
Geremy Davis might make it ahead of Parker and Washington.
Big Blue Blogger : 5/25/2015 10:31 am : link
Not only is he a draft choice, but his special teams skills are probably more useful than Parker's, with Dwayne Harris taking over the return roles.

As for Marcus Harris, he had hip surgery to repair a torn labrum, and was also fighting an injury to the AC joint in his shoulder. He's 26, so this might be his last chance to show he can stay on the field. There's little question he has NFL talent.
well, he's also selling the

'shame we didn't get to see Washington in real action' kool-aid. The only excuse Washington had for not seeing real action is who he sees in the mirror. When W earns seeing time in a real game, he'll see time in a real game.
Washington is on thin ice, IMO
bc4life : 5/25/2015 10:47 am : link
They commented on his need to contribute on special teams. They drafted Davis and signed Harris - that's two posts, involving STs. And then there are the givens - OB, Cruz, and Randle.

If you cannot play STs and have trouble staying healthy - your chances to win that 6th spot are virtually non-existent.
Depth at WR

will change by Sept due to injuries. Assuredly, someone will be done for 2015 before Labor Day.
If Marcus Harris surpasses Randle

We have some problems. I get --good camp and preseason. Guys like Cruz are very rare. If our 2nd round picks can't beat out former practice squaders/arena leaguer, we have problems.

This is a throw away article. He compares Harris to Randle and Cruz while stating how better he looked compared to them. Remember who was throwing them the ball and who was throwing Harris the ball. So is he going to point out how Nassib was the best looking QB in the same period? Of course not because it silly and meaningless. Don't want to take a chance and anger his readers. Just another Raanan throw away article.
The WR depth is very deep
Anakim : 5/25/2015 1:20 pm : link
We also have Chris Harper, who was a fourth rounder a few years back and was very good at Kansas State, and Juron Criner, who has very good size and speed.

still think we've got a bunch of unproved players after Beckham, Cruz, and Randle. And Randle himself has been uneven. But if we end up with a glut of excellent preseason players, then maybe we can trade one like we did Ryan Grant a few years ago.

Marcus Harris was playing with the #1s in training camp.
Anakim: I wish I shared your enthusiasm for the WR depth.
Big Blue Blogger : 5/25/2015 2:07 pm : link
I see a bunch of guys on their second (Washington, Criner), third (Parker, M. Harris) or fourth (Harper) teams, who weren't even regarded as quality depth by staffs that, in several cases, were hurting badly for receivers. Vying with those retreads are some lightly regarded Giant "finds" like Edwards, Davis and Talley.

I think there's enough talent behind Beckham, Randle, Cruz and D. Harris to produce good camp competition and some decent backups; but the rest of the NFL isn't going to be waiting with bated breath for the Giants' WR cuts.

Excellent analysis. Fans tend to overestimate the talent of their own teams, especially at this time of the year, when "hope springs eternal." And that's OK. That's what fans do. But many of these players as you note are on their second, third, or fourth teams.

Eric I remember Washington and Harris being a big part of those 4th quarter preseason comebacks and those were with Nassib going up against non 1st string guys. I remember the starters were RR, Cruz and JJ.

He's built almost like and bench presses like a linebacker. So the reports have at least some basis in the way the guy LOOKS. Plus he has a pretty level head it seems, and know he has to "make it" as an ST player to start off.

Unlike, perhaps, Corey Washington - who has talent as a pure WR but doesn't seem to "get it."

Is solid insurance on the roster and i hope he has great camp and wins a spot. He was ahead of Parker and should be again....
That might be true
RetroJint : 5/25/2015 8:14 pm : link
about Davis. More a projection as a gunner. Tyree had mastered the art at Syracuse. Along with a linebacker named BJ Johnson, whose career was cut short due to injury, Tyree was drafted solely to cover punts. The Giants need a wide receiver or two to take a turn as gunners. The next group of candidates is usually the corners. The Giants cannot keep corners healthy, but to be fair about it, I don't recall any of them being injured covering punts. Coughlin liked it when guys like Clayton & Thomas were also around. Giants need to improve their net punting average. Better returns and better coverage. I hope Davis is a help.
He could beat out Parker.
BeerFridge : 5/26/2015 9:11 am : link
But let's not go crazy. He's 26 and this is his fifth team.
The depth WRs may not be standout players
Ten Ton Hammer : 5/26/2015 9:57 am : link
but how you build depth in the NFL is by having guys that aren't household names, but fit well in your roster even though they might not fit on other rosters.

The Patriots do this consistently. They don't have pro bowl talent behind their starters. They groom guys to do what they need for them to do, and that makes them look good.
