NFT: NFT: Need advice on cell phones

Hades07 : 5/26/2015 11:58 am
I need some advice on a new cell phone and I am no expert on them. These are for work mostly but also personal use. I don't like large phones. I have only used Driod smartphones to this point but I don't have an objection to switching. I need good battery life, and quick processing. My uses are in order of priority:

1-email
2-text
3-phone
4-web browsing
5-camera

I don't use it for much of anything else. My options are:

HTC One M9
Iphone 6
Iphone 5s

Yes, those are my only options and there is no difference in cost between them. I am leaning towards the I5 because it is the smallest, but it also has by far the smallest screen. I like everything about the HTC except its size, I think it may simply be too big.

If you have used any of them give me some likes dislikes, if you have advice let me know. Downside is once I pick I am stuck with it for 2 years, no returns if I don't like it after a couple of days.
If good battery life is a priority for you

then stay far away from IPhone...
I just recently picked up a Galaxy S6 Edge

primarily because the camera on my old Nexus 5 was an insult to the concept of photography. It's only been a few days but so far I absolutely dig it. The camera alone makes it a worthwhile upgrade for me, but it's also very fast and has good built-in apps for email and text messaging. Texting was also not so great on the Nexus -- it had trouble compressing its crappy videos to sendable file sizes out of the box, whereas the Galaxy can do that.

The battery life doesn't seem so hot out of the box, but there are apps and settings you can try to help maximize it. I haven't bothered with them yet because I tend to charge it mid day (and it charges insanely fast).
the M9 does get great reviews

I would have compared the two but the Edge's design just won me over.
Droid Turbo
pinyin : 5/26/2015 12:29 pm : link
Verizons version of Motorola's Nexus 6, with the typical Verizon Droid warranty.

THE LG G3 and G4 are also great phones.

Never been a fan of the simplicity of Iphones, and the shoddy plastic build quality on the Samsung Galaxy devices.

And I do like some Apple products, but the Iphone 6 is a dud imo..
Thanks, but the Samsung is not an option for me

Thanks for the heads up on the Iphone battery life.
the iphone battery life
MookGiants : 5/26/2015 12:31 pm : link
is fine, particularly in the 6 or 6 plus.

Almost all smartphone batteries drain quickly, more than you'd expect them to. There's really no getting around it.

If you have no interest in customization, just get an iphone
if I were you

I would go with the iphone 6.

Better battery life than the 5, bigger screen but not too big.

Thanks. Seems like that is a couple of strikes against the Iphone. The Motorola and the LG are not options for me. Only the 2 Iphones and the HTC. I have never had an Iphone or an HTC product. I have only had experience with LG, Motorola and Samsung cell phones. Mostly good with Motorola and LG, nothing good with Samsung. This is why though I need advice because I have no personal experience with HTC or Apple phones.

My prior (and first) experience with a Samsung phone was so bad that at the time I felt there was nothing that could make me own one again. In fact I applied my hatred of it towards all Android phones and started endorsing iPhones. The S6 is just a different animal though. It's not plastic, and the glass feels and looks exceptional.

The M9 is supposed to have outstanding speakers for a phone, but the S6's speakers are the best I've personally tried. I wouldn't listen to music through them frequently, but for speakerphone and Skype calls it's a nice benefit.

My wife has the Samsung, just got the new one, 6? idk....

...we are returning it she hates it. She is on Day 4 with it. Drops calls constantly, freezes up when a phone call comes in so she can't answer. Opening email causes the phone to shut off 1 out of 5 times. It is probably a lemon so we will just exchange this. She had the Samsung before, Galaxy 4 or something like that. She liked it, I would hate it, battery wouldn't last until lunch. Seems to be a taste thing, but since the Samsung isn't an option for me this time, it is moot.
Good point about speakers for the phone calls....
Hades07 : 5/26/2015 1:02 pm : link
...my thought when the sales guy mentioned speakers was, I don't care I don't use it for music. I do though use the speakerphone often and it will help with that, thanks.
I suggest iPhone6...
RC02XX : 5/26/2015 1:07 pm : link
while it's bigger than the iPhone5, it's too big to be cumbersome. And the processing speed of the 6 is far faster than the 5.

Also, it's just a simple phone that will most likely meet your needs.
I have the HTC One M7
antdog24 : 5/26/2015 2:22 pm : link
great phone. No problems, all of my previous phones have been HTC (HTC Droid Incredible 2, HTC DNA). I will probably get the HTC One M8 next only because it will be free with a new 2 year contract when my upgrade is due. Not enough of an update to the M9... it's basically the same phone minus the camera.
Don't listen to the fan boys
YAJ2112 : 5/26/2015 2:39 pm : link
go with the M9
PHONE WARRRRSSSS!!!
UConn4523 : 5/26/2015 2:43 pm : link
all the phones on this thread do what you need. You'll find that you won't use half the features so just go get one that feels right in your hand/pocket, make a quick purchase, and don't think about it again.

I tested them each out for the speakerphone clarity, and the HTC was far and away better than the Iphones. So That is the one I got. It is a bit bigger than what I wanted, but that was the only thing that it didn't beat the Iphones on. Thanks for all the help guys.
