The problem is, any trade would involve an assumption of Mathis' final two years of $5.5 mill and $6mill/year..Unless, something is agreed to by Mathis to reduce his salary, who's going to trade for him, at his age?
He's been the Eagles best lineman over the last 4 years. So,etching just clicked when he got to Philly and he's been a beast since, quietly collecting accolades and leading the Eagles OL.
That said, he'll be 34 this season and dealt with knee issues last season (although he did successfully return from temporary IR). You can't give up more than a 7th at this point. *Maybe* a 6th. But the Eagles aren't going to trade him in-division. Even Chip Kelly's "I'm the smartest guy in the room" routine has it's bounds.
Giants don't get breaks like that; ever. Mathis will get released and go to a contending team. Giants are not considered contenders. Next year, a new coach, new staff, and new QB means 'rebuilding'. He won't waste his career going to a team on the decline. Sorry, I'm not optimistic.
RE: Mathis is a helluva player and a great locker room guy.

JR, even if they just traded him to us for zero return(re your can't give up more than a 7th at this point post), are you still going to assume the final 2 years of his contract($5 1/2 and $6 mill)? The 7th rounder is irrelevant unless you can also get a much reduced 2 year salary in return..
It is all well and good going to a contender, but you need to go to one that needs a starting G at 5-6M per year which is what he wants. 2 different things
He is not getting traded due to salary. Realistically, he may not even get cut. The Eagles are not up against the cap
And could see a 2 year 5-6 million(total) contract given his age..Firstly, has he already rejected that kind of amount from the Eagles? Secondly, if he were cut, would we want him(hopefully yes)?

You're right and I meant to mention that. It's actually worse than just absorbing the final two years of his deal, he's apparently not at OTAs because he's actually unhappy with his contract. So even if traded he can still dig his heels in and say he's only playing for more money. And although he is a heckuva player, no one is giving a soon to be 34 yr old G with recent knee issues a raise.
And this is just my own opinion, I might be completely off, but I live in Philly and have seen/heard a lot from Mathis over the past few years. He strikes me as the kind of guy who will simply walk away and retire if he doesn't get what he feels he's owed.
I'm not so sure. If he's pissed at the Eagles for not paying him what he believes he is worth, he may want to stick it to them by coming here. That said, I doubt the Eagles would let that happen. But we do need another good lineman now with Beatty out and I was of the opinion we needed another one before Beatty went down so I hope we find somebody.
I think when people say that players don't want to go to rivals,
Why wouldn't they? Players go to rival teams all the time. They don't really hate each other as much as you might hate them. We've had many players go to the Redskins over the years. Do I need to make you all puke and post some pictures?

Agreed..Now the Brooklyn Dodgers/NY Giants rivalry was as intense as was reported..After the 1956 season, Jackie Robinson was traded to The Giants and opted to retire rather than play for his hated rivals..Not the same today, imo
if he is released, the Giants should be driving the car that picks him up from the philly parking lot. He would absolutely be a solid stopgap on a one or two year contract.
for those saying he'd never sign here I have a few rebuttals.
1. Plenty of philly players have been cut and become giants - Jenkins & Patterson being the two most recent. plenty of precedent.
2. he wouldn't have to uproot his family
3. he'd get to stick it to the eagles twice a year
Problem is he wants a whole lot of money according to that article.
