They were playing much better baseball coming into this series. O'Sullivan was coming off two nice starts and Howard and Utley were on fire entering this series.

How many times have we been shut down by mediocre pitching lately?? This is nice to see no matter who it is. And I dont feel sorry for anyone. We've had a ridiculous amount of injuries early. Nobody has felt sorry for us.

with R. A. Dickey. Dickey wasn't a good pitcher until he came to NY. He signed a minor league contract, came up mid-season and gave us 2 1/2 very good years culminating in a Cy Young and a trade. The trade gives us Thor and d'Arnaud, both of who are turning into special players. Even the Mets can get lucky.

Blue Jays owned stepping in and killing the Wright for Cruz Jr. trade was pretty lucky as well. Also the Rangers balking at adding Odor to the agreed upon Wieland/Ross "and a 3rd player" for Beltran deal.

Milledge for Manny trade was a rare trade mistake.

I still like the Santana trade: Humber, Mulvey Gomez, and Guerra.

Gomez developed into an excellent player, but not until the Twins had given up on him.

When d'Arnaud returns, does Plawecki stay

Listened to Philly radio broadcast on way to airport....

Fastball is "flat"...
Curve lacks " bite"
Didn't use changeup at all

And then the home run...they just about creamed themselves.

Santana was an excellent ace pitcher initially for the Mets and he also gave us the first ever no hitter.

we traded him at age 21 when he was already MLB "ready". He didnt hit until he was 26. He was NEVER going to last here. Maybe as a 4th/5th OF. But when was the last time we had a backup anything for 5 seasons?

Endy Chavez was the last "super-sub" OF guy they had, but I'm not sure he lasted 5 years...

Actually, right before Endy they had Joe McEwing - who was truly a super-sub and played almost every position - and I'm pretty sure he lasted at least 5 years.
Actually, I just looked it up
speedywheels : 5/27/2015 6:31 pm : link
Endy lasted only 3 seasons (06-08), Joe was for five (00-04). But to your point, it was quite a while ago...

if Wuilmer Beccera pans out ( not counting on it) there will be hell to pay in Toronto

Dom Smith is 2-2 so far

Dillion Gee with a meh Dillon Gee outing so far
Smith has really heated up
ZGiants98 : 5/27/2015 8:57 pm : link
Im sure now that he's hitting people will move on to point out he's not hitting for power. He's 19 years old. The power will come as he continues to age.
Hope so

That's what we would hope. But lack of power was a concern with him coming out and he's done nothing to ease it. Being a six foot even 1B doesn't help make his power projectable either.
We'll see if as he matures he gains
Headhunter : 5/27/2015 9:07 pm : link
power, they projected it will come but until it arrives it's just projection
His frame suggests
ZGiants98 : 5/27/2015 9:14 pm : link
he will never hit for big power but David Wright was a multiple 30 homerun bat at 6'0.

I have a hard time believing a unanimous top 10 pick and one of the best high school bats in the country won't hit to some level.

People just have no patience.

Everybody blasted Nimmo for not hitting for any power..... until he did. A year later everyone was on Cechinni for not hitting for power..... and now he is.

Its the same crap year after year.

Lets let these kids develop.
And Im not even saying
ZGiants98 : 5/27/2015 9:17 pm : link
these guys are going to develop into big power hitters or anything. They may not. With Nimmo/Cechinni we are probably hoping for 10-15 anyway. The point is these kids are still growing and developing and we really don't know anything yet.

hitting under the Mendoza Line for Smith was a concern. Then the "unnamed sources" put stuff out about his work habits. I am willing to him all the time he needs. Lucas Duda is developing into a beast and he is going nowhere.
we probably won't even see Smith in Queens
spike : 5/27/2015 9:19 pm : link

I read all of that too and read about the weight concerns and then I saw him in person this spring training and was floored. He looked like a skinny kid. So blown out of proportion. And if an 18/19 year old had issues working out year round and being a professional athlete for the first time in his life, color me NOT shocked. Just another thing that should improve with maturity.

Nimmo spraining his ACL sucks. This weeks after he slid real awkward on it and was fine the next day. This was a big year for him and I felt like he was going to breakout a little. Seemed like he was heating up too and then...bam.... Hopefully he's back in a month or two and at least gets to finish up strong.

So many injuries this year. Crazy.
