Beatty at RT

DaShotel13 : 5/27/2015 1:23 pm
I know this is too early to discuss and there is all of the offseason and regular season to go through but IF Flowers, who will have plenty of growing pains, remains at LT, can Beatty be successful at RT?

I'm not entirely clear on the technique differences (LT needing to be more athletic, etc.) so if any of the more knowledgeable OL people can give their opinions, I'd be interested on what the consensus is.

Dont think he has the power but i have no clue.
If Schwartz is at RG I think it can work well
Eric on Li : 5/27/2015 1:48 pm : link
Beatty is not a pure power player, but he should be really good over there helping Schwartz with blitz pickups and any speed rushers. Generally that would provide some nice balance for the line overall. Just as Flowers/Pugh has a nice combination of power/mobility on the left side.
9 million for a right tackle?
est1986 : 5/27/2015 1:52 pm : link
Don't think so.
with zone blocking
RicFlair : 5/27/2015 1:52 pm : link
does the RT really need to be super powerful to be effective?
.
RicFlair : 5/27/2015 1:53 pm : link
and if Flowers is doing ok at left, the question just is: "is beatty better than whoever else is at rt?"

Don't think so.
As I said in the other thread, I think Beatty could probably be a

competent RT, but they can't have Jerry next to him at RG. Beatty is not a mauler type, Jerry gets pushed around. If (a big IF) Schwartz is healthy, or somebody else steps up at RG, then it could be a good thing.

better than 9 million on the bench right?

I'm just going for this season if he comes back.

If you're talking strictly next season and beyond, then I'm with you.

The best player has to play. I don't care if he's making 9 million. If he can't beat Flowers at left, he should go to right.

exactly right
Ideally ...

When he returns, you want the least disruption as possible. Unless Flowers is getting Eli killed, that may be the best option.
We're going to find out
JonC : 5/27/2015 2:57 pm : link
Beatty has played RT before, he needs to demonstrate some major utility if he wants to stick around.

Even then, with a $7M cap savings on tap for releasing him next offseason, he could very well be toast here.

That cap space could go to Prince or JPP or a better RT.

What Are the Odds?
Samiam : 5/27/2015 3:11 pm : link
Not saying this can't happen but what are the odds that a rookie LT, who left school early, will start and keep Eli healthy from the blindside? I think we're hoping more than anything that it will happen but, to me, it's a reach. And, Beatty, while no superstar, is a highly competent LT. He may be overpaid or not (don't think so); but when he gets back assuming he's healthy, he's going to start at LT. It's wishful thinking to think that Flowers will do a better job as a rookie than Beatty.
The types of RBs we have are not who you think of
Bob in Newburgh : 5/27/2015 3:13 pm : link
when you think of a pure finesse RT, which Beatty would be.
Unless Flowers flops
JonC : 5/27/2015 3:13 pm : link
good luck convincing them on pulling him.
This issue won't come up until December
Ivan15 : 5/27/2015 3:50 pm : link
Beatty will not have been able to do heavy lifting probably until at least the beginning of November. Assuming he can get himself into game shape by December 1, he probably will be just in time to provide bench depth as the o-line gets beat down.

Anyway, they may quickly decide that Pugh needs to be LT and Flowers needs to be RT.
can we wait to see how these guys actually play?
HomerJones45 : 5/27/2015 5:19 pm : link
Or must we put up with 4 months of predictions based on hopes and dreams?

Flowers will be a rookie LT with bad technique. He will wear a bullseye on his back all season. Pugh has been beaten like a drum whenever the opposition puts a half decent pass rusher over him. There is no proof that either of these guys will be as good as Beatty let alone better.

Beatty getting hurt weightlifting was not a good development.
First of all if Flowers ends up at LOT
mrvax : 5/27/2015 5:47 pm : link
this year, it means something has gone horribly wrong. Like a worldwide epidemic. Or a typical NY Giants rash of injuries to starters.

I'd think if Pugh can't go to ROT then Flowers would be headed there if Schwartz wasn't up to it. I'm almost sure Schwartz has NFL experience at ROT.

As been said, Beatty is a finesse guy. He's good in pass protect but not very good at run blocking. He lacks that nastiness needed to play well at ROT. He'd probably be serviceable but it would suck, IMO.

Furthermore
mrvax : 5/27/2015 5:51 pm : link
if the line is playing well, it would be stupid to shuffle guys around just to get Beatty back to LOT.

I do remember Coughlin doing that a few years ago when he yanked ROT Locklear who was playing well and installed Diehl (returning from injury) who by that time was shot. That cost the team 1-2 games and nearly got Eli killed. I think it was 2012.

In summary, I have no idea what's going to happen but I have a good idea what I'd do.

Beatty played RT as a rookie.
Vin_Cuccs : 5/27/2015 8:35 pm : link
And if I recall, he played it rather well which is surprising being that power/strength is not his forte.
So what if he is
tomjgiant : 5/27/2015 10:52 pm : link
Overpaid for a year or two.We have had a hard enough time finding decent OL,so you want to cut a guy who has started at LT for years because now he might play somewhere else on the line. Some players are overpaid and some underpaid but don,t get rid of a guy who can still play and could be vital in solidifying the OL for the first time in years just because his contract is a little high for the position.

Flowers was drafted to be the LT of the future.

If he's capable of making the future now, that's a win win.
