NJ.com: What the Giants' Justin Pugh did this offseason

Giants offensive lineman Justin Pugh's offseason of change began in an Octagon grappling with MMA fighters and other NFL players. It ended at a new position, left guard.

...

After coming into the NFL at 300 pounds and playing most of last year around 305, he's current at 310 pounds. Not just any 310 though. Pugh believes he's a much healthier, stronger and fresher 310. He uses his bench press and strength numbers as evidence. All are higher than ever.

Part of this transformation comes from the altered diet.

"I just feel better. I always thought [gluten-free eating] was a fake made-up thing, until I did it," he said. "I actually feel better now. My energy level has gone up and I think it's something that is going to help me in the long term."

At Unbreakable, they left out the chokes, but did plenty of greco-wrestling and boxing. Pugh believes the wrestling helped with body-on-body, hip-under-hip contact, and will benefit in trying to win the leverage battle that occurs on every snap for a lineman. The boxing helped train his hands to remain high and inside the body.

These are exactly the things he was hoping to accomplish, especially with a move to guard knowingly on the horizon.

"[The goal was] trying to work on my hands. My hands were the biggest thing I was trying to accomplish," said Pugh, who plans to return to Unbreakable for three more weeks before the start of training camp. "At guard it's even more so and you're fighting right now and it's body on body work inside. That's why it's great.

"The wrestling is going to help me even more because, at tackle, it's a lot of working in space. At guard, you have a body right on you, right across from you, and you have to get your hands on them now. That is going to help me out."

All over it. Maybe he should take Flowers with him.
Great to hear this

It takes time for these guy to figure out what training, diet, etc. works for them.

I expect a much improved player this year.

of surprised you don't hear of more guys using MMA/Wrestling in their training (especially OL).
He will also be between Richburg at his natural C position

and a high pick in Flowers. That alone should help him after playing next to Jerry and Walton last year. And he is healthy
He sounds enthusiastic about this switch, which is tremendous.

Easy to root for and I do think it's a great match with his abilities. I think he has a good chance to be the best guard for the Giants since Snee in his prime.

If we can just hold it together at the tackle spots.
IMO the Giants run a hybrid West Coast offense-

a power running game and a quick-hitting passing game.

But, my question is whether Pugh at 310 lbs. Is big enough to block bigger DTs to make the power running game go? Something to keep an eye on during the pre-season.

switch his weight to 310 lbs ...will you? I'm only kidding.
D'Marco Farr

Farr, DT for the Rams in the 90's, trained with a karate instructor to speed-up his hands. During an interview he said it helped with the hand-to-hand combat that NFL players experience in the trenches.

Glad to hear Pugh is doing everything he can to be the best he can be. We need four more Pugh's.

Zach Martin weighs 310 lbs.....lots of top quality guards are between 305-315 lbs.
Once again Eric thanks for the info. Keep the positive news coming :)

Good for Pugh - trying a better diet & interesting cross-traning option.
its true a lot of NFL OL (and DL) weigh upwards
BlueLou : 5/28/2015 12:59 pm : link
of 320 lbs, or even 330. And often these guys have a fair amount of fat on them. Not what TC wants.
Why does everyone equate Poundage
blueblood : 5/28/2015 1:19 pm : link
with blocking ability and strength?? They two are NOT necessarily related.
Even if they do..

310 doesn't put Pugh as one of the smaller Guards.
