put players in the opposite spot of what is perceived as their best position...we've done it with Schwartz, several linebackers throughout the years, the safeties, etc.
I would think Taylor has more range than Collins... and the fact that Collins can hit makes it seem even more questionable to take him further away from the line... but the Giants never did put labels on their positions.
Is there any *good* reason OBJ is returning punts during practice? I mean, the season pretty much hinges on this guy being on the field for 16 regular season games. Eli doesn't play Specials, I don't really see any reason by Odell should be out there on Teams either.
Probably because it's just ota's. And want to see what they have in case of injuries. I'm quite sure they know who their returner is. Plus what Eric said
aren't a future indicator by any means, but you do have to be curious that the coaching staff put Marcus Kuhn in with the starters. Everyone has him gone, yet he starts, interesting
The big concern with him was value and viability at #9, and I was vocal in that regard. Strong value pick at #33 even with the trade up, which I was also vocal in support of.
tidbit on third rd pick Mikelle Thompson. Wonder how he stacks up against our fifth rd pick also named Mikelle Thompson.
Beckham hype is going to be insane as the season approaches.
Jabs are way more effective if you don't swing and miss and spell his name wrong twice.
Please email me, tweet at me, etc., when I make mistakes. I can correct them ASAP. Unfortunately, I'm far from perfect. Very flawed as a matter of fact.
I wasnt so much directing anything towards you although we did discuss Collins in the past.
My real issue is with what the pre-draft process has become. I always like the team to draft based on production/track record than I do combine and "workouts".
My feeling all along has been that even if Collins projects as an in the box safety "extra LB" type of player, the defense still needs one of those too. He is also an enforcer and leader, which checks off two more boxes for defensive roster needs.
As awesome as he was last year, we still don't know for sure if that was just a fluke or if he really is transcendentally good. Just the fact that he stands out in OTA's to the extent that Raanan is talking about makes me feel more and more confident.
Understood, but 32 other teams passed on him in the first round, so there's essentially a consensus that he was a second rounder in this draft. We need him, at either/both positions, for certain.
Unless they have someone better than Beckham at fielding and returning Â
punts, I have no problem with him back there. Overall, he was a good, not great PR. But, every time he fielded the ball he had that HR threat that we hadn't had at that position in a long time. He was dynamic in his ability to make the first guy miss almost every time. If they work with him on being more selective (i.e. when to fair catch) some of those shorter returns would be eliminated.
Collins would be the "free" safety type. He moves significantly better than Taylor. In fact, it was obvious he moves better than any of the safeties on the field at OTAs.
This guy is a major steal. Reese nailed this and given the trade up it's one of the best picks since Eli.
depth and experience is extremely scary, hopefully we can add someone?
I thought Selvie was a good signing, why would he be fighting for a spot?
I think they like what they have at safety but it's not out of the question.
Selvie is fighting for a spot because there are 6 DEs that have a shot (on a team that may only keep 5) : Selvie, JPP, Moore, OO, Wynn, Ayers (he's a lot like Ayers) and the others, I think, are locks.

I'm not someone who is 100% against our stars being out there to return punts. The Sehorn injury has clearly scarred a large portion of this fanbase and caused us to get paranoid whenever we put a valuable player back there on returns.
But based on what I've seen, I don't think Beckham is a good enough returner to justify the risk of keeping him out there. Sure he's obviously an agile and quick athlete but he really hasn't shown to be anything more than an average returner.
14: 8.14 YPR in the NFL last year (27th out of 41 PRs with 10+ returns)
College: 62 returns for a 9.0 YPR and 2 TDs
The numbers show that he's been pretty average as a returner throughout his college and pro career. Sure PRs have a lot to do with the blocking as well, YPR is team dependent. But still, the eye test also shows that Beckham isn't exactly DeSean Jackson back there.
I personally would not risk Beckham to be a full-time PR. I don't feel like the risk is worth the reward. But I would absolutely keep him in a part-time PR role and I'd trust his hands and instincts in a close/late game where we need to get a big return or where we need sure hands to fair catch a ball.
Interesting that Casillas and not Mcclain in for Kennard Â
It's an initial projection of what the coaches want the lineups to be, and they often do carry through into camp, and into the regular season. They normally are a good indication of the depth chart.
I question what is being learned during these OTA's Â
beat writers draw conclusions about a guys ability to contribute. Can Thompson get a little time before being declared so 'raw' he's going to take years to develop. Stupidity.
• Fifth-round pick Mykkele Thompson looked especially raw. If Wednesday is any indication, he's a few years away from being able to play as a safety. Of course, it could just take him time to get used to an NFL practice and system, and he will improve significantly by training camp.
OTA lineups represent the coaching staff's best guess Â
'Fifth-round pick Mykkele Thompson looked especially raw. If Wednesday is any indication, he's a few years away from being able to play as a safety.'
I know it's his job to observe, formulate and share his thoughts on the team. This still seems like an ambush without giving the young man a reasonable amount of time to settle in.
just 1 question and I will go away, you say you have had a long career in Financial Services, my question is who is dumb enough to invest or let you mange 1 nickel of their money?
the coaching staff's fascination with Markus Kuhn continues Â

Lurking all day again Mr. Happy? Thank goodness for LinkedIn.
To answer you troll question, those with enough brains to know it's "one" and not "1" unlike yourself. :)

wtf? It's a football thread and not usually the thread that invites gratuitous personal attacks.
with little quality depth players like Kuhn have nine lives.
Let's hope the receivers, DB's etc come out of this camp understanding their patterns and assignments unlike these past years when they're praised coming out of OTA's yet lost on the field when camp opens and the 1st preseason game.
to baffle me....what the hell do they see in this guy? He might be an impressive physical specimen but he sucks at football.
It is mystery. I can only guess that he has managed to hang on because of ST play & because of ST play he gets a game jersey and because he gets a game jersey he gets some defensive snaps.

This kind of snarky crap is why good contributors stop coming here to share what they know.
I've got to be in the top 10 here in bemoaning the snarky crap that chases away valuable contributors, but really, this just isn't that bad. Probably could have done without it, but if this is the worst Raanan gets here, we're golden.
if anything, it's more of a dig at Raanan's editors than Raanan Â
It's Week 17 in a winner-take-all game against Philly... Eagles lead by 5 points with 90 seconds to play and they are punting from their own 20 yard line....
And its a winner take all game because OBJ missed the 10 regular season games with a lingering hamstring suffered in OTA's while returning punts.
Along with Eli, the kid's the season and he ain't worth losing returning punts in OTA's.
I would think Taylor has more range than Collins... and the fact that Collins can hit makes it seem even more questionable to take him further away from the line... but the Giants never did put labels on their positions.

My locks for the DL are:
JPP, Moore, Odi, Ayers,
Hankins, Jenkins, Bromley, Ellis
I think Selvie, Wynn and Kuhn are fighting for 1 or 2 spots.
I thought Selvie was a good signing, why would he be fighting for a spot?
I would think Taylor has more range than Collins
Well, they do get to see both players up close. Seems like they'd be able to tell who's got more range.
Beckham hype is going to be insane as the season approaches.

IDK, for years it appears once camp opens the team begins from square one so I question what is being learned during these OTA's.

We always fall into the trap of trying to react to OTAs when we probably shouldn't.
Considering what you saw in Mets spring training I'm sure you do

I think it's one of those circular things :)
Jenkins
Kuhn
Bromley
Ellis (new guy)
Jenkins was at DE. Kuhn was next man up. Jobs are won during practice. Doubt the depth chart stays this way.
