Jake Long Visited the Giants Today

Sources say free-agent OT Jake Long visited the Giants today. Obviously interesting light of Beatty injury.

Graziano has to be the absolute worst Giants killjoy I seen. Giants could assemble the NFL all=time pro team in each era in their primes in all phases. And Graziano blog headline would be "I can explain why it won't work"

He must come from a long line of POS. No one can be this salty without some family traits to influence them.
Would be nice assuming he's cleared to play
illmatic : 5/28/2015 9:11 pm : link
even if he only came on in a backup role, that would be some nice depth if he's capable. But if he's healthy enough to play at a solid level, you have to think Denver will go after him too.
Broncos signed a tackle today.
bceagle05 : 5/28/2015 9:12 pm : link
Ryan Harris or something. So perhaps that's there plan.
Really like it if true - anyone in the NFL is at best 50/50 to make it
Eric on Li : 5/28/2015 9:17 pm : link
through a season uninjured, get as many talented bodies as you can. He played 15 games 2 years ago and 7 last year, if he can bridge most of the gap until Beatty is healthy he would be a great signing.

Not that they are the end all be all, but PFF had him as the Rams best offensive player by far in 2013 at a +22. Last year he was basically neutral in his 7 games (-1). Seems like a really good fit to me for both parties at RT. He can rehab his value and possibly start for an entire season in a big market.
lost in this
GiantsFan84 : 5/28/2015 9:21 pm : link
there is no depth on the line especially at T, unless you include Pugh and Schwartz as tackle depth. But they are better suited where they are. They need someone that can actually play LT even if only for a couple games to spot start.
If he's healthy the run game

I didn't check out the actual twitter conversation but it sounds like he is making fun of some other guy who was saying the move "wreaks" of desperation or something like that

Graziano. Idk if he ever says anything even somewhat good about the Giants. They've been bad recently, but he completely discounts having an NFL record number of players on IR. We were also lucky to win the Super Bowl in 2011.

Idk if ESPN has any good writers at all outside of a few guys who write soccer articles. They are TERRIBLE

on Long for those who are unfamiliar with him...
Offensive Tackle Jake Long Visits the New York Giants - ( New Window )
If both sides want to move forward...
Big Blue Blogger : 5/28/2015 11:17 pm : link
...and the Giants want to mitigate the immediate cap impact, Long can largely be paid with 2016 cap dollars. That's what the team is doing with Schwartz and Beason: using NLTBE playing time incentives for players who missed most of the 2014 season. In Long's case, any incentive for his eighth game and after would be classified as NLTBE. So, for example, they could guarantee seven games worth of pay, and structure the rest as incentives.

The big problem, even if Long's rehab is on track, is timing. Of course, every ACL is different, blah, blah; but the usual recovery cycle suggests that Long won't really be himself until pretty close to the time Beatty is expected back. In September, he might look more like Marshall Newhouse than the 2010 version of Jake Long.
I know every ACL is different, but didn't he come back quickly last yr

Just turned 30 and has not played a full season since 2010 - he also has not played that well since 2010

Saying that, even as broken down as he is I would be more comfortable with him than Newhouse

This continues to show how few LT the NFL really has

This guy was a 10M cap hit for the Rams....

Think this guy is going to play for the vet min?

I doubt he passes the physical......I doubt he can even practice at OTA's.....

Let's say he passes the physical....do you you want to invest cap dollars in that knee? I doubt he would sign a contract that is a performance contract, based on how many games he actually plays...

We do not have the luxury of gambling on his knee...this line (K)NEEDS solid depth, not someone with one wrong move...

guess is they're just ascertaining the status of his rehab. He can't be ready to play, and as somebody said, probably can't even pass a physical. This is just the Giants doing their "due diligence." When healthy, he's better than Newhouse, but he can't be close to that point yet.

Apparently they are expecting Bamiro to fill a back-up role at OT. He certainly wouldn't still be getting reps if he weren't showing the coaches something! I for one hope he exceeds everyone's expectation, he is a giant!

If healthy, he's a serviceable player

who has played some very good pro football, but been absolutely awful at times as well.

That, and he's had many significant injuries to his knees and back. Buyer beware, but for a small deal hopefully he provides reliable depth.
Sort of leary about this
mrvax : 5/29/2015 8:47 am : link
I can see giving him a contract based on if he wins a starting or backup role but not more than minimum if he can't win a job.

I'd like to get our permanent younger guys in there now, take the lumps early and continue to improve. I see Long as a bandaid.

I think we already have the guys to form a very good line. They just need experience at their positions and as a unit. Beatty would have likely been gone in 2016 anyway. Long is no long term answer at guard or tackle for this team.

This.

Don't expect the guy who was a high first round pick several years ago. That guy is gone.
I'm not interested in this
BeerFridge : 5/29/2015 8:56 am : link
He's been on the downward trend for years, including big injuries. What's the chance he plays more than 12 of the next 32 games? And at what level will he play them?

Rooting for this is like the guy in your fantasy league who is using last year's magazine to pick his team. The name and the player are not the same.

Seriously though, if they could get him on the cheap for an incentive laden, cap friendly 1-2 yr deal he could help.

Dragon : 5/29/2015 9:44 am : link
Has not been able to break the injury bug in years while his play has been ok nothing more. Sure after each injury he has returned however he has been hurt more than he is playing. Is Long a better option than a young guy who has some upside I would say no. If it was the middle of the season and he was healthy sure he would make sense now we have plenty of time to see what we have on the roster today.

Sure. Cap friendly and not a long deal? Let's just not pencil him in anywhere other than riding a bike on the sidelines. The odds of a guy with this many years in the league and his injury history being a steady contributor are pretty low. If he lowers his price to acknowledge that then sure, I'm ok with it.

Great player when healthy, I'd love to have him on the squad... that said I don't think signing him helps the Giants at all this year. 7 months removed from a 2nd ACL tear on the same knee. I can't imagine he passes a physical.
well
djm : 5/29/2015 10:50 am : link
camp doesn't start until late July. Preseason doesn't begin until mid August. Season won't kick off until September. So let's say we want Long to start hitting and moving around early August--that's still 2 months and change from now. That would be close to 10 months removed from surgery and we probably don't need Long to do much until the 11 or even 12 month mark.

If the guy is on track to be ready in a few months or even less he could help this team. Let's see what the docs think, not the ones on BBI...
It depends how hard he had worked already

If physical and tryout drills pass, even if he gives 5-6 games on the schedule front end, or has to be rotated out a series per game, we are buying time for a rookie to develop and/or until Beatty comes back( week 10,11?).
At worst, he teaches EF a lot about the LT position, private tutor-like.
