I just switched to a classic double-edged razor years ago. It actually changed my life in that it made shaving something I enjoy now. Never going back, but if I did I would give this a shot.
...the razors pulled on my beard and didn't shave nearly as close a Gillette, I had to reshave the same area which caused irritation. You also have to push on the blade while shaving too because it doesn't pivot much. And they got dull much more quickly.
So basically, they cost about a third of the price of a Gillette proglide, but they were about one quarter of the value (have to shave face twice and they last only half as long).
I get about 2 weeks out of a Gillette proglide. Considering I shave every day, to me it's worth it.
I've gone on the Dorco website several times, and the blades were never cheaper than DSC, contrary to the linked article. But I'll try again. And I love the automatic delivery every month. Their shaving cream and other stuff is a ripoff though.
I use Dollar Shave Club. We ordered an extra handle and split the "executive" blades every month. The blade comes much faster than we can use them so we are started to have a stockpile. Regardless, it has saved us a ton of money and it's a very high quality product. I definitely recommend it.

First go to their twitter page to get coupon codes. Every few weeks they'll do something like 25% off, maybe with free s&H.
That said, Im not in love with the blades. They wear out faster than the Gillette's and when they go the shave starts to feel itchy afterwards. I still get a decent shave with a past its prime Gillette. On the flipside, the shave with a sharp Dorco is actually closer for me than with Gillette. I have a lot of the Dorco's now (my reserve plus my brother's, since he went DE), and Im not sure what I'll do when they run out.

really is the way to go, but I have visions of Sweeney Todd.
I actually use either the Gilette or Schick razors with the 5 blade cartridges. But I get at least three months out of each blade. After the first two weeks, I strop them across my arm each time before using and it will hone them to last 3 months. And, since my wife usually uses CVS bucks to get them at a much cheaper cost, it works out to being much more cost effective than the Dollar shave Club, especially if you want their razors that have multiple blades (and aren't a dollar).
provided you don't go nuts with the cool gear, specialty soaps and cremes and all of that. I get bulk blades, Astra brand for about 10 bucks for 100. Use one blade a week for three or four shaves tops.

Same story here, exactly.
Same here as well. First week or two I bled enough to start my own bank, but once you get used to it you're gold.
and yeah, you don't need all the frou-frou accessories
I have a cheapo boar bristle brush I bought for about five bucks almost a decade ago, use a kitchen bowl for lather, and I buy a big tube of Proraso (under the Bigelow label at Bath and Body Works) for ten bucks, which will last the better part of a year.

Someone properly described it as akin to going from automatic to manual transmission.
Never saw the advantage to the high-end stuff either
My wife bought me a (non-refundable) expensive shaving package for Christmas last year. Cost was ridiculous, and the stuff inside was really not much better than anything you can get at Amazon for a fraction of the cost.

Yep. I use an old coffee mug that was once in my grandparents' kitchen for lather and a puck of shave soap that lasts for months.
cost me about $0.35/blade for Wilkinson Sword for 100 blades (20 5 packs). I bot them mainly because my father swore by them and am very pleased with them. I change the blade after 7 uses, roughly 1 blade per week for me.
I've been using Cremo Shave Creme, but am seriously thinking of going the brush, shave soap route.
Maybe I'm doing it wrong, but I use the Proraso container
Did get a fancy mug with a handle that came with my wife's gift, but I ran out of the soap it came with, and that Proraso is going to last a long time (and smells a lot nicer than the original).
Got Personna blades from Amazon, probably about 7c a piece, each one goes a week.
I've gotten a few as Christmas/birthday gifts - the Geo. F. Trumper Limes was a particular favorite. Smelled and shaved great. I just can't bring myself to spend $20-35 on shaving cream, though, when Proraso is so much cheaper and just as good.
Victor, man, Wilkinson Swords tore my face up. Just goes to show that different blades are best for different faces.

Absolutely. The Merkur blade that came along with my razor did the same thing to me. Sliced my self up with it.
They weren't terrible but they weren't as good as the Mach 3 which can be bought at Amazon for less than the DSC top blade (which is what i was using).
that's the thing people don't realize. The actual razors that cost a dollar are horrible. If you want the types that have multiple blades, it works out to be not that great of a deal.
Well, the blades are much, much cheaper. There are a wide variety of them, and you can sample different ones until you find one that works best for you. Now, there's some technique involved in using them, but once you get the hang of it you can get a very close shave. Also, I've found that a single-blade safety razor is much easier on my skin than multiple-bladed cartridges.
Forget Dollar Shave Club; Buy the Same High Quality Razors for a Third of the Price - ( New Window )

I shave a couple times a week and I do not see any difference in the razors vs the ones you buy in stores. Its worth it...

the biggest change I made to my shaving game recently was using a good pre-shave oil. leads to a much smoother shave with less razor burn.

This safety razor talk intrigues me though.
What is so good about it?
