NFT: Matt Harvey

Saw Mr. Harvey on the Daily Show last night. While it was a really short interview, what stood out to me was how in tune he was with what people in the media were writing about him. Stewart asked him about Syndergaard, and he noted that twitter had taken a screen shot of his reaction to his homerun - he was in awe. Stewart went on, in jest, to put a pillow and police blockades around his elbow, but the discussion turned to Joel Sherman's article that the Mets' should abuse Harvey because the assumption is that he will leave the Mets in 3 years. Harvey didn't say anything to quell or dispute that assumption. As a die-hard Met fan, I love Harvey's competitiveness, he has brought life back to the franchise, but I find it really obnoxious how much a "me" guy he is. He doesn't have to be David Wright-loyal, but at least be somewhat like Jose Reyes - excited to be a met, thankful for the opportunity, some degree of appreciation. I wasn't around in the 80s, so i don't know if gooden/strawberry/hernandez/darling/carter were any different. But the last big star we had, Piazza, he embraced being a Met,it just doesn't sit well how much it feels like he just doesn't want to be a part of this organization. Maybe Jeffy is to blame, but the Mets IMO have treated Harvey fine, even Boras think so too.
I didn't get that at all.

I thought it was a good interview and Harvey was sincere. I also think that paying serious attention to anything Joel Sherman writes is a mistake.

agree with you. Luckily, I don't think this is something we have to worry about for a while. He's controlled by the Mets until after the 2018 season right?

Someone the other day brought up offering Harvey to the Cubs for Bryant. Not sure either Mets or Cubs would do the trade, but something that at least made me think for a bit.
He has made other comments

that sound as if he may be biding his time as a Met.

The guy is fantastic to watch and I hope that maybe if the Mets can at least come close or possibly win championship while he is here he will want to stay a Met. Of course the Mets will have the opportunity to offer him a large deal at some point prior to his becoming a free agent and if they do he will have a bigger decision to make.

But to your larger point as a fan I would prefer players on teams I root for would at least seem like they are 100% "all in" and desired that it could work out to where they could play their entire career with the team. Harvey hasn't come across that way to me, at least in my opinion others may feel differently.

I'll at least enjoy him while he is here.
This guy has had one good season

Have more than that before I start being concerned about him being a free agent
Yeah, I don't get why people have been biting their nails

about what happens 3-4 years from now.

it was no different in the 80's maybe even worse
pjcas18 : 5/29/2015 10:33 am : link
Strawberry got in a fight with Keith Hernandez on team picture day one year because he was pissed Hernandez and Carter made more than him.

I hate dwelling on the past, that team should have been a dynasty so many self-inflicted wounds.

but today at least guys are mostly clear about it, they go almost 99.9% of the time to the team who pays them the most. you have an opportunity pre-free agency to avoid it with some guys, and maybe post TJ Harvey is one even with Boras as an agent, but it won't be cheap.

would not trade Bryant for anyone in baseball besides maybe Trout. Not a knock on Harvey at all, but a guy like him who is going to be cost controlled for at least 2 more years than Harvey isn't going to be traded for any starting pitcher in baseball
A "sell high" guy, IMO

This is so damn stupid
ZGiants98 : 5/29/2015 11:20 am : link
I could care less if he walks or not. We are getting him for the prime of his career for peanuts. If somebody wants to give him a 10 year 300 million dollar deal as he approaches his 30th birthday be my guest. We won. You lose.

Even more staggering deGrom, Syndergaard, Matz won't be free agents until 2021-2022. We'll be fine if we lose one of our 5 aces. lol.
I watched the interview

Would you really have been comforted if he said 3 years before Free Agency I want to be a Met for life? I know of guys who said it ( see Jose Reyes) and left. The future will take care of itself, relax, kick back and enjoy what you do have, don't waste time worrying what you might not have down the road.
personality wise I'm not a huge fan of Harvey
chris r : 5/29/2015 12:35 pm : link
and how much he seems to want to craft himself as the next big thing in NY, but as long as he pitches well for the Mets its fine.
I'm not enormously worried about it
Eric on Li : 5/29/2015 12:43 pm : link
I love Harvey and the attitude he brings, but most Boras guys get way overpaid. If the team is in good shape it won't be just because of him, it will be because multiple guys have continued their developments, and if he's unreasonable in contract negotiations they will be in a strong position to trade him if they have to. Hell, trading him vs. paying him might be the right decision even if he wants to be a Met for life. How'd the RA Dickey deal turn out?
Harvey's agent is Boras
Deej : 5/29/2015 12:45 pm : link
Boras clients almost always test free agency. Test isnt even the right word, because it seems like they usually move.

So just worry about the next 3-4 years. Some other team will probably be paying Harvey for 2 good years on an 8 year contract.
They more than likely will still own the club in 2018
Headhunter : 5/29/2015 12:49 pm : link
but there is a possibility they sell if Saul Katz is adamant about walking away. I thought the Payson family would own the team forever, until they sold. Some group might make the Wilpons& Katz an offer that they can't turn down. A lot can happen between now and then

gee, ahhhh? Maybe it's b/c this organization rarely fields a winner and fans want the light at the end of the tunnel to be more than just a flash? They've had a winning percentage of just .479 since the beginning.
which has exactly what to do with what

Lol, i like your style.

We all want this team to win long term rather than see a flash or glimpse of success vanish within a few years. Harvey's a Yankee fan and considering this ownership it's pretty normal for the majority to be concerned.
What a life you

Who knows what he means? Let's just hope Sandy Fold doesn't pull a Reyes if and when the time comes.
