Not Mets related but Corey Seager last night went 6-6 with a HR, 2b and 6 rbi. Stud

AAA-
Reynolds 0-4 3 k's (has really stunk it up in May)
Rivera 0-4
Tovar 0-2, 2 k's
Bowman 6 innings 7 hits 5 runs 4 earned 1 walk 3 k's (believe it or not, this was one of his better starts)

AA-
Cecchini 3-4, 2b (Once Matz is promoted one could argue Cecchini as high as the Mets 2nd or 3rd best prospect at this point)
Boyd 1-4, 2b (promoted to AAA to replace Kyle Johnson who needs surgery)
Cessa 6 innings 3 hits 0 runs 0 walks 5 k's (nice start to his season, could see him in 2016 BP)
Sewald 1 inning 2 hits 0 runs 0 walks 1 K (should be promoted)

A+
Whalen 4.2 innings 6 hits 3 runs 3 walks 4 k's (solid start to the season but that K-rate is not very good)

Secrest 1.1 perfect 1 k
McNeil 2-3, 2b
Smith 2-5, 2b (really heating up, still yet to homer however)
Conforto 0-5, K
Stuart 0-4, 2 k's
Rosario 2-4, BB
TDA 0-3, BB, K

A
Knapp 5 innings 4 hits 1 run 1 walk 7 k's
Delgado 4 innings 1 hit 0 runs 3 walks 7 k's
Garcia 0-4, 2 k's
Becerra 0-4, K

I was listening to some of the Savannah/Charleston game on the radio. This Charleston team strikes out A LOT. They lead the Sally League, and probably any other league in K's, so don't be too excited about the Gnats pitching lines.

Wuilmer Becerra played a nice game in RF and would have had an assist on a strike to the plate, but the Catcher ole'd the throw.

Neither pitcher is much of a prospect. Knapp hasn't really progressed and is viewed as organizational filler and Delgado is an indy ball kid they signed for depth (already 24). Knapp was viewed as a potential Gee type but looks like that was optimistic.

happy to see some real life from Smith. Does he walk a lot? If so, I wonder if his upside could be an Olerud type of player. Good defense, high OBP, but only 10-15 HRs per year.

Also pumped to see Cecchini doing well at AA. He's a plus defender right? If Wright can't go this year, most likely answer if Herrera 2B, Flores SS, and Murphy 3B, or a trade, but I wonder if Cecchini can hit well enough to maybe make a Murphy 2B, Cecchini SS, Flores 3B type of thing something to consider come August.
On the other hand,

sad to see Conforto cooling down a bit. He's doing fine, and I'm still excited about him, but he's not absolutely mashing A ball and forcing a promotion like a lot of us had hoped in April.

Tiny righty whose stuff wasn't deemed good enough to be drafted or signed until age 24 nor mentioned as a top Indy prospect by BA. I don't have my hopes up but who knows?

DanMetroMan : 5/29/2015 11:56 am : link
not buying into Dom Smith unless/until he begins to truly mash. I think people really underrate how special John Olerud was (and how much power he had). Yeah, power wasn't his "forte" but he averaged 21 homers per season while with the Mets (59 extra base hits on average) and from age 22-32 still averaged 18 homers per game (with a .406 OBP no less). Guy was a special offensive talent. Right now Smith is more like James Loney. Maybe that changes as he matures.

DanMetroMan : 5/29/2015 12:05 pm : link
very happy the Mets are moving their SAL team to Colombia, SC. The pitchers numbers are artificially good in Savannah and it throws off expectations.
The Mets actually drafted Olerud

out of HS but he went to college instead.

Roger Clemens too! If you ever are bored check out the Mets draft history and scroll around you will be shocked with some of the names they picked but didn't sign (true of every team, not knocking them).
Olerud
DanMetroMan : 5/29/2015 12:11 pm : link
played 0 minor league games yet first 117 games (6 games and then 111) had a 117 OPS+, pretty awesome.

is a borderline HOF. Terrific contact hitter with a high OBP to above avg to very good power.

Yup. Underrated by casual fans due to era/skillset.
Great insight that I hope pays off

someone wrote that since the Mets have known for 7 months that they would not have a pick till 53 they have been heavily scouting the players in the 30-60 range and hope to pounce on a guy that drops in the 2nd and 3rd rounds
Olerud is probably my 2nd favorite Met to Piazza in recent history
Eric on Li : 5/29/2015 12:47 pm : link
Letting him walk in FA was one of the first true "Freddy Coupons" decisions that set the franchise back needlessly. Breaking up that 99' IF was so f*cking stupid. Probably the most fun baseball year I can remember.

My friends and I all agreed our favorite season was 99, even more than the 2000 team that reached the WS. I remember watching those playoff games in my dorm room and Yankee fans would come by and say "I hate the Mets but you are so into it I'm sort of rooting for them" lol
Olerud walked because he wanted to be closer to home

Borderline HOF is overstating his case a bit but "borderline great in his prime" player is probably close to the truth. 10 year run of 136 OPS+ 92-2002
Wright
DanMetroMan : 5/29/2015 1:02 pm : link
134 career OPS+ for context
I'd say borderline HOF isn't that much of a stretch
Gary from The East End : Admin : 5/29/2015 1:32 pm : link
58 bWAR over a 17 year career should at least get you in the conversation.

But the bar for first basemen is insanely high.
I think Delgado
pjcas18 : 5/29/2015 1:36 pm : link
(and again, just the eye/sniff test) is closer to the HOF than Olerud.

not sure how the stats bear out, plus Delgado was somewhat of a douche bag.

I remember watching the grand slam single game at a crappy bar/restaurant in Boynton Beach FL with my grandparents, not letting anyone leave until the game was over. 99 team was so much fun, most underrated guy on the team was by far Ricky Henderson. His stats that year were INSANE looking back. That lineup just fit together so perfectly. The top 5 guys were all prototypical guys for their spots in the BO and the IF defense was obviously almost unrivaled.
And in terms of HOF - I'd say no Olerud, yes to Delgado
Eric on Li : 5/29/2015 1:46 pm : link
Delgado has to be closer than Olerud because offensively he was far more consistent over his career and a far bigger power presence.

Interesting.

He said something like of all the guys he ever dealt with Delgado was the only one who went out of his way to make KB (and other writers) lives harder. The fact he got so little HOF support makes me believe this 100%
How many times would Fran Healy bring up that story
debo_GIANTS : 5/29/2015 2:17 pm : link
about John Olerud never playing a minor league game ?!

That guy would repeat stories like they were going out of style.

It makes me really appreciate Gary, Ron and Keith when I think back to the old days.

I remembered reading that. He was like Eddie Murray 2.0, and he had the whole issue where he wouldn't stand for the national anthem which just got under my skin.

I know most of you guys enjoyed Ojeda but he annoyed me for some reason. His obsession with "old school" ways of doing things annoyed me. Why must these guys choose SABER or non-SABER? I know quite a few fans who can use both. Gary has been slow to accept advanced numbers but slowly has started to. I like Figgy as well. The guy who replaced KB is so non-descript I couldn't pick him out of a lineup.
Healy was the worst
Eric on Li : 5/29/2015 2:24 pm : link
When they would put his crappy interviews on during rain delays it was torture. He was the absolute worst. Their current announce crew is phenomenal.
Ojeda at times
Headhunter : 5/29/2015 2:25 pm : link
Was enjoyable but other times seemed to be a bit condescending. Figueroa
is on point on everything that he talks about. He answers the questions he is asked and doesn't go off on mini tirades

HH,
100% going by bonus or BA previously citing

Aybar (though if he's there for very long that's a bad sign, he's already 21)

Chourio

Daniel Guzman

Juan Uriate (Mexican catcher)

Hansel Moreno (big SS)

Edgardo Fermin (VZ SS)

Tulio Garcia (bonus OF)

Debora (big kid, busted for PED's older)

Really curious to see where Kenny Hernandez plays. The bat sounds very intriguing.
see whose hitting 2nd for the mets tonight?
