Analysis: Keeping Tom Coughlin and using the franchise tag to retain Jason Pierre-Paul qualified as no-brainer moves in the eyes of our analysts. Vereen's addition to the offense stood out as the best move. While Riddick gave the Giants a B-plus grade, the others had them down in the C range.
"It felt like they made overpays," Yates said, echoing Williamson's thoughts. "The difference between the Giants overpaying and the Jaguars overpaying is, I don't know if the Giants need to overpay. I liked the Vereen signing, but they gave up a lot for guys who on some teams would be largely special-teamers. It also feels like Flowers is one of the projects of the first round."
Polian didn't just like Vereen's addition; he loved it. He also said he thought the Giants' offensive line was maybe one player away from becoming a first-rate unit, and that the one player could already be on the roster, perhaps. He thought Pierre-Paul would make or break the defense.
"Collins will bring a toughness to the defense," Riddick said. "On offense, Flowers gives them something along the line that they do not have: a flat-out physical, aggressive, tough football player. You can go up and down that offensive line and every guy had their time where they got their butt kicked last year. They got tired of it and wanted some attitude there."
That must do it for them, because they seem to lose the drive to become actual champions.
Said another way, we lost a lot of junk and, at least on paper, replaced them with players expected to be quality depth and a potential starter in Ellis.
They replaced him with DeMarco Murray

Lose their best player and still get a B. Okay.

I think he was referring to Nick Foles.

And they also lost Herremans and Maclin. But I guess they are on the Maxwell train, only until he's roasted by the NFC East WR's like Bryant, Jackson, and of course Beckham.
Larry Johnson, 2006, 416 carries - got hurt the next year, never the same after that.
Ricky Williams, 2003, 392 carries - kind of a bad example since there were other factors at work there, but never the same player again.
Eddie George, 2000, 403 carries - played four more seasons, never averaged more than 3.4 YPC again.
Jamal Anderson, 1998, 410 carries - got hurt the next year, never the same player again. Out of football by 2001.
Barry Foster, 1992 Steelers, 390 carries - got hurt the next season, never the same player again. Out of football by 1995.
I don't think Demarco Murray's future prospects are very bright.

Nick Foles wouldn't be the best players on his neighborhood pick-up team...
These grades imply they think everybody improved except the 49ers. That will turn out to be nonsense. Some free agents and draft picks will bust, some teams will get old fast, etc. This would be a great time to grade look at how they did last year in evaluating teams' offseason.
Besides, the offseason isn't really over until the games start. Guys get signed off the waiver wire and the last round of camp cuts, and some of those signings are VERY significant. (Madison Hedgecock, for example.) There are also trades at the last minute (Ryan Grant). And a lot of veterans are signed after Week 1 so they're not guaranteed their full-year contract. So the front office really hasn't got their 53 in place until middle of week 2.
Because God hates you, just like the rest of us.
The draft is key. Always has been. IF we look back on the 2013 2014 drafts with awe and adulation we will be fine going forward. Won't matter what the Giants did the last 3 months.
With that said, this offseason the Giants signed players that are on the way up rather than household names on the way down.
That must do it for them, because they seem to lose the drive to become actual champions.
It works for Eric. It seems every freakin year he's on here all offseason telling us all how scary Dallas is. He loves him some Cowboys
