After Giants left tackle Will Beatty tore his pectoral muscle bench pressing in the weight room, versatile lineman Marshall Newhouse waited for an answer. He spoke with offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo and line coach Pat Flaherty about the potential ramifications, which included the veteran Newhouse finding his way into the first-team lineup at a number of different positions. McAdoo and Flaherty disappeared upstairs to their offices to discuss the possibilities. Newhouse had started at left tackle, right tackle and guard when McAdoo was an assistant in Green Bay. The Giants had options, with him and their potential combinations. |
Theoretically 4 new OL(EF at LT,JP at LG, WR at C, anMN at RT),
5 if you want with GS at RG not LG.
TC will seek to find the best 5 quickly.
Camp will be competitive.
He said that was before Beatty's injury. I listened to the interview as well.

I don't think they plan on him at LT this year (paraphrase) re; Flowers

I drifted in and out b/c those two give such a great interview (sarcasm) so you're likely correct. I just heard about how strong Flowers is and that he didn't think Flowers was inmthenllans for LT.
Go get it Newhouse!!!
Hard to tell how good/bad he will be by judging that time in his career, in my opinion. The Packers didn't run - at all, I mean, during 2011 and 2012. They didn't have a rusher eclipse 600 yards in either of those years. I mean, Aaron Rodgers tied for the team lead in rushing TDs in 2012 with two.
They also had 2 offensive coordinators in those two years. McAdoo switched in that time from TEs to QBs coach. I'm sure he saw something in Newhouse.
Under Joe Philbin as OC, Newhouse rose from a 5th round draft pick in 2010 to a starter in 2011. He started again in 2012. Then, Mike McCarthy got weird. McCarthy moved Bulaga to LT and Newhouse was forced to compete for the RT job and eventually lost the job in camp. This, from a FOXSports story explains the situation that ensued:
I don't know what happened. Does he just suck? You can look at the hurries/sacks allowed figures, see he got replaced and hasn't bounced back and just judge from that.
But at some point in the not too distant past, he was the starting LT for the Packers during a 15-1 campaign and an 11-1 campaign.
I hope he does well here.

From nj.com: Missed two games with a back injury in 2011; Tore his left triceps late in the 2012 season; Tore his right ACL in Week 15 of the 2013 campaign; Tore his right ACL again in Week 8 of 2014
From the same nj.com piece, from an nfl exec regarding his health: "Horrible. Was horrible before he signed in St. Louis. Mess."
Just don't see how a guy with that history coming off his second ACL tear, which occurred just 8 months ago. Fact is, even if signed, he's unlikely to last the season. At this point it's better to pin your hopes on Newhouse improving. If he hasn't I'd rather shuffle around the guys they have and hope someone can step up at guard.
In Beatty's case it seems his poor 2013 was more a mental issue than anything else.
so you have two experienced players on the left, maybe masking some athletic ceiling that newhouse may have, while allowing schwatz and flowers to use power on the right.
and newhouse, having played on the left, may help pugh there, more than a rook.
That was exactly my feeling as I finished reading it
The Giants didn't draft Flowers to play RT, although that's probably where he would've started out if Beatty hadn't gotten hurt. They drafted him to eventually replace Beatty at LT. The only thing that's changed is the timetable.
They signed Newhouse to be a swing tackle, a reserve not a starter. With the injury to Beatty, he's being pressed into service as a starter...for now. That could change if one of their younger OTs steps up.
It's more likely they sign Jake Long than put Bamiro or other into the starting lineup at RT.
Root for Newhouse to succeed, even if he's average.
