Stapleton: Cooper Taylor could bolster safety shortage

"He flashed a few times [in Monday’s practice] and I was glad to see that," Giants coach Tom Coughlin said of the 6-foot-4, 228-pound Taylor. "Big, strong man — if we can keep him healthy and he can stay out there …"

Coughlin did not finish the sentence, but his assertion spoke volumes.

Cooper Taylor could bolster safety shortage - ( New Window )
"Nobody’s pegged anywhere right now,"

I think this could be said for the whole defense. Spag's is bringing in a whole new system and some players will benefit while others are left behind. It will be very interesting to see who benefits.

I'm hoping Moore will be one of those who benefits.
I'm excited to see what Taylor can do with this opportunity...
RC02XX : 6/5/2015 8:39 am : link
It sucks that he missed out on some valuable chances for playing time last season, but with how open the safety position is, hopefully he can solidify his position as the team's starting safety.
It's hard to get excited about Taylor
Milton : 6/5/2015 8:43 am : link
The better he looks on the field, the bigger the heartbreak will be when he is once again lost to IR. His initials, CT, could prove all-too appropriate.
We are thin at safety.....
Doomster : 6/5/2015 8:46 am : link
They seem to praise the guy when he has a chance to show something.....but we all know what his main problem is.....this was another reach/project by Reese.....he took a guy with physical problems, hoping that they would just go away.....if he is injured again this year, it's another blown pick...if he stays healthy and contributes, finally one of those picks has paid off...This defense needs all the help and breaks it can get...

His physical problem in college was a heart condition which has absolutely nothing to do with his injury from last year.

Other than that, dead-on analysis!
Incorrect, the guy had all sorts of injuries in college...

Separate and apart from his heart issue. Can't research it on my iPhone but it's out there.

Hopefully the DL competition is as open as the S competition. I would love to see Moore, Wynn, and OO get a legit shot to pass Ayers, Selvie, etc on the depth chart. On the inside, hopefully Ellis and Bromley can move Kuhn and Jenkins down the depth chart.

Silver lining to JPP's absence is that there are more snaps for Moore, Wynn, and OO to prove themselves or at least grab the coaches attention.

5th round picks aren't "reaches". At that point in the draft everyone is a flawed prospect.

After being diagnosed with Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome, Cooper missed most of the 2009 and 2010 seasons with Georgia Tech and transferred. He spent his final two seasons at the University of Richmond. Cooper was impressive during his time with the Spiders. In his Senior season he was a selected for the First-Team AP All-American, First-Team Walter Camp All-America, First-Team The Sports Network All-American, Second-Team All-American by Phil Steele[3] and the Second-Team All-American by Beyond College Sports First-Team All-CAA, the First-Team VaSID All-State, College Sports Madness First-Team All-CAA, the First-Team Capital One Academic All-American and was the selection of the CoSIDA Academic All-District.[1] He also was selected for The Touchdown Club of Richmond Division I National Defensive Back of the Year.[4] Following the conclusion of his Senior season, He was selected and participated in the 2013 East-West Shrine Game as a member on the East team.[5] On February 19, 2013, He was selected as the CAA Football Scholar Athlete Of The Year.[6]

Other than the heart condition, I don't see any other missed time. Just curious what injuries he had in college
in 2013 Taylor had shoulder and hamstring injuries
Victor in CT : 6/5/2015 9:25 am : link
and ended the season on injured reserve. 2014 was a wipeout, IRd in camp with a foot fracture. Played only 4 games in 2010 due to a broken hand.
Just like "Animal Farm".....

All fifth round picks are equal.....some are just more equal than others....

Unless you get 1st round value in the 5th round it's a reach

He had a broken hand, in fact I think he might have broken both of his hands (at different times). Still no relation to the hamstring injury he suffered in 2013, or the broken sesamoid bone he suffered in 2014.
so you flip a coin five times
grizz299 : 6/5/2015 9:49 am : link
and get five heads. What's the odds on the sixth pick? Ans: exactly the same as on all the other piks.

Point...I think it's about luck as much as a predisposiition and he his as likely as anyone else to go through the rest of his career without an injury.

I remember Sims being injured early on and got the rep.for brittleness.

For now, I dare to dream about two huge tough safety's become an integral changing part of a defense that could be among the top five or six in football. And btw, I think Buffalo not Seattle is going to be the best defense.
So we really should have passed
RollBlue : 6/5/2015 9:50 am : link
on drafting Justin Tuck? He had injury issues at ND. If you are only allowed to draft players who never had an injury in College, you won't have much to pick from. This narrative on BBI is foolish and old.
And i THINK
grizz299 : 6/5/2015 9:50 am : link
fifth and six rounders is where you should have reaches. Take a guy with talent but problems over a guy that simply has sixth round talent.
Anybody picked
OC2.0 : 6/5/2015 10:04 am : link
Past the 3rd you're hoping for the best mostly.
Calling a 5th round pick a reach is not doing justice to the process
JohnB : 6/5/2015 10:29 am : link
The success rate for 5th, 6th and 7th round players is small. You can't hang this one draft pick and knock Reese for it.
From an old ESPN article
sb from NYT Forum : 6/5/2015 10:39 am : link
Quote:
At Richmond, Taylor had to battle through a variety of injuries that included a knee issue, a pectoral muscle injury and two broken hands. But he had 78 tackles, five interceptions, one touchdown and 1.5 sacks as a senior. He drew interest from NFL teams and did well in the East-West Game.

Not trying to run the guy down, but to say his only injury history was the heart issue is just not accurate.
Link - ( New Window )
Even so...
Klaatu : 6/5/2015 10:53 am : link
It's not like his injuries in college have any relationship to the injuries he's suffered as a pro, any more than Justin Tuck's knee trouble at ND had any relation to the Lis Franc break he suffered in his second year as a pro. Shit happens.

Look, for all we know Taylor could end up being the next Gerris Wilkinson. Tons of talent, can't stay healthy. Or, he could end up being the next Kam Chancellor - Gil Brandt's comparison, not mine. I'll keep praying that it's the latter, not the former.
Here is what I know
SLIM_ : 6/5/2015 1:38 pm : link
I'm more confident that Taylor will be healthy than I am confident that Will Hill(Yes- I said that name) will stay clean.

Doomster will find any reason as an excuse to bitch

Opinion he should not have been IR last season to begin with his timetable was 6-8 week return time. IMO I feel that the Giants IR guys way to fast only to bring on some trash heap bodies to fill the ranks.

they didn't want to use their only other temp IR tag. Still don't get why the NFL doesn't just fix the issue and Goodell wants to add more games.

The injuries are all related- they all happened on him. No one said he's got a single bad body part, the problem is that he's been injury prone.
Which is what I said a few posts later, Bill.

Timing is everything :)
we only need 1 of the low draft safeties to hit
xtian : 6/7/2015 5:26 pm : link
5th rounders do not have a high probability of being starters. if the giants get several average nfl starting safety years out of any of theses guys that would be good enough: cooper, behre, thompson, heck, throw in 6th jackson, too.

No questioning that Cooper Taylor has the physical tools. He looked good in camp last year. Injury bug has taken the polish off of him but you have think the "law of averages" will finally tilt our way this year for the team and for Taylor. I personally think he'll blossom along with many of our other 3rd and 2nd year youngsters.
