plus look at the resources we have tied up at guard whether we agree with it or not:
Schwartz: Big FA signing from last year, though contract re-done.
Pugh: 1st round draft pick who seems the Giants think was destined to play LG.
The only way this works is if Schwartz is either:
A. Not healthy
B. Going to play right tackle which, even though RG is by far his best position.
True, but he's great depth, can step in and start if called upon, is healthy, can impart much needed saavy to the youngins' on the OL and can still play at a pretty high level..We need insurance for the inevitable OL injury, imo..There's no downside here imo..

There is 0.0% chance Mathis is signing anywhere as depth or competition. He will have plenty of suitors that will pay him like the top notch starter he is.

the infamous "great for depth debate" ... #1, this guy is not a depth player, he is a starter, he is proven better G than any current on our roster #2, he is not going to a team to be a "depth-player" , #3 a player of his talent, if he ever landed on this club makes room for himself at G, its the other log jam question mark bodies that are shuffled/moved/cut loose to make that space ...
Until we are blue in the face, but I think we all know this isn't going to happen. We want it to happen, and it makes sense, but realistically I see no way Reese gets this guy.
Miami is likely a more viable contender than the Giants are.
They went 8-8 last year and have, at least on paper, improved their team pretty significantly this offseason. Brady is potentially out for 4 games, possibly opening up their division more for them.
A starting gig there, with the income tax situation and a likely bigger pay day anyway, is easily a better job than being a Giant, especially in a situation where you expect him to only be "depth" or have to compete for something.
Pretty sure he isn't signing as depth anywhere regardless of what month we are in. He was due to make $5.5 million this year. He stayed away from camp because he wanted a new contract. You don't think he and his agent knew he would get at least that on the open market while doing this? $5.5 million is not depth.

No one is paying anywhere close to the 5.5 for a 34 year-old(in season) player..They'd be nuts to imo
I don't disagree with that, but he'll get more than $5.5 million guaranteed over the life of his new deal, which is all he wants and that is not back up money.
RE: We're not going to do it, but if we did sign him,
I don't disagree with that, but he'll get more than $5.5 million guaranteed over the life of his new deal, which is all he wants and that is not back up money.
Oh that I would agree with re life of the deal guarantee
of his career, I'm hoping his disdain for how the Eagles reneged on their monetary promise, will induce him to play here(if guarantees are reasonably close) and face them twice a year..
Of course Reese/TC would have towant him here in the first place
digested by our brilliant GM he will be gone. Reese is like a big old dinosaur that wants to wag its tail. Three days go by before the message travels from the brain to the tail for it to move.
I have trouble seeing a good fit here unless the Giants overpay. Giants are not considered a contender and he will be looking for a good team looking to pay big bucks. From the Giants' perspective, give a big contract to a 34-year old player?
If he did sign, I think we would more likely see Schwartz move to RT.
this is an absolute no brainer. outside of the money, how is this even a debate. the guy would be an instant starter. how can we go from panic that Beatty goes down and we are play, gulp, Jerry, to we have no room for a really good guard?
plug him in at RG and move Schwartz to RT, or as others have said moe Pugh back to RT and put him at LG. Either way our starting OL and depth is improved.
Because he is at the tail end of his career and giving a big, multi-year contract to a 34-year old player on a team that may be firing its coaching staff at the end of the season may not be wise.
he is still very consistent and i don't see the drop off, perfect guy to play now, we draft another guard next year, groom him for one more year and then Mathis either plays his third year or not.
Again, I didn't say $ was not object. I just saying I don't get at all any element of this debate where an argument is we don't have room. Frankly any of our "guards" can go to the bench for him. He's an upgrade to either guard spots.
I think the most critical part of the OL this year is getting the lest side of the line and center (flowers - Pugh - Richburg) set for years to come. Enough time has been wasted in Pugh and Richburgs development we shouldn't make the same mistake with flowers.
It would be unwise to sign the guy because of a short term injury situation and stunt the long term growth of Pugh
If they do sign him it should be for the RG spot with Schwartz kicking to RT, imo
about Pugh being such a natural fit at LG, especially if this is a reason to not pursue Mathis. Does Pugh have the goods to maul at LG or is this move smoke and mirrors to cover up for a guy who has shown too many weaknesses playing tackle in the NFL? He regressed last year at RT, but he was hurt.
OG is essentially set, they're not moving Pugh again and GS is getting paid.
Mathis will want a starting gig, NYG will be loyal to their own, and the key for the OL is cohesion. Eg, no musical chairs, hold the fort until Beatty returns and plays.
Instead of Mathis they could sign Blaylock for way way less and he be good enough to put Pugh back at T and be a better G than anyone but Schwartz. Or he could play RG and push Schwartz to RT. Either would be better than starting Newhouse or Jerry.
because he had no leverage at all. He wasn't going to not play. Its good for the Giants in that the Eagles just got worse. Dumb by him too. I doubt he gets 11.5 million somewhere else.
I doubt we get him because it would be too good to be true
loved that they got Landon Collins, but the Cowboys got a top 10 talent DE in Randy Gregory in the second round, and a top 10 O line talent as a free agent. They have been very smart. Giants O Line is far from solid and Dallas' is the best in the league and they are pretty much a shoe in to win the division again Giants need to step the freak up. And its ridiculous how ESPN and NFL network going out of their way to justify the release, showing plays (against the Giants) where he missed a block that cost them a TD) and trying to push the idea that Mathis is not that good, He's not John Hannah, but he is a very good guard, and the Giants O line is a shit show. Don't sleep Reese. I want to hear the due diligence that was done that came back with the decision that this guy was not worth paying what they paid Walton or Schwartz.
much better than the disgusting foot from that Tim Wright post

The following teams he would start on immediately:
Dolphins
Colts
Broncos
Jaguars

Rams
Falcons

Even if you don't think PFF rankings are gospel, Evan Mathis' rank among all NFL guards the last four seasons: 1st, 1st, 1st, 2nd
NO EFFFING BRAINER!
I also don't believe it will happen, but it would be a terrific 2 year signing imv
I don't know the financial impact here - but i'm not sure how Mathis couldn't at least be seriously considered.

Why not move Schwartz to RT and use Mathis at RG? He's not a mauler but he's a helluva better option than Jerry at RG or Newhouse at RT.

Thanks, Eric. That makes sense, then.

Also, at 34 the wheels tend to fall off pretty suddenly, he's had some recent injury issues.
So it's not a no-brainer.
Did you read the latest from Johnny Boy over at BBI?
No. What did he say?
He called you a dinosaur.
Ha! That's great! I guess I'm a TwoRingaSaurus.
This would make a good theme song for you.
Absolutely. We could play it Jerreesic Park.
Flowers, Mathis,Richburg, Scwartz, Pugh
Wow..that's a line!
But we certainly do need him or another Guard who is so much better than Jerry.
