since he is technically not under contract and even if he did show up he is not going to do much...he would have to sign a waiver or his tender to practice and why should he risk that?
show up to work for free? He's not contractually obligated to go to the mini-camp until he signs his tender (although if I'm wrong, please correct me).
was Michael strahan a team player? I recall him holding out of an entire TRAINING camp.
The problem is we are putting in a new defense now and JPP needs to learn it. If he is worried about an injury waiver than just show up for the meeting and walk-throughs. He should be excited to start learning the new system.
last thing we need is him getting a pointless injury.
He's a DE. I'm sure Spags' D will be different, but how different for a DE? I'm pretty sure the DE principles of setting the edge and getting to the QB remain the same in pretty much every 4-3 system. I'm sure there will be different types of stunts and things JPP will need to adjust to, but I don't think it will be too difficult for a DE of his caliber to adjust to whatever changes Spags makes.
This bothers me far less than a WR sitting out, because those guys need to improve their timing and connection with their QB.
his lifetime earnings, Pierre-Paul would be stupid to show up for any practices in excess of the bare minimum he feels necessary to get ready for the season.
a cap busting long term deal. $15 mill not enough motivation to get to work and learn the defense? And spare us the Strahan comparisons. Strahan didn't pull that shit in his 5th year. He was a 15 year vet looking to save his strength for the season. And he was a much better player than JPP.
You cant compare this to Strahan due to one little detail:
Strahan was under contract to show up.
JPP isn't.
Not sure why anyone here would be surprised by this and/or think any less of JPP. Personally, I think he'd be stupid to show up before he signs any kind of deal.
I think the Giants took a big risk franchising him
It's entirely possible they're going to pay $15 million for a guy that is plagued by nagging injuries or just out of shape completely.
If they weren't sure about him enough before, why would they be sure after a year that could be marred by uncertainty or even acrimony?
The smart move would have been to trade him, either in this past draft or the one before. I doubt his perceived value around the league will be that high again.
that he won't be in shape is hogwash too. He's been working very hard by all accounts. So he won't be in the Giants training program as if that's the only way to stay in shape.
AND/or is considering retiring, AND/or, already knows the D,non of which he is, I do not give him a pass on this kind of move.
If this is a game of chicken, he will lose.
15M frees up a more money for '16, and whatever the rules are if he sits out the year.
RE: Another example of why I would be very reluctant to give JPP

The vast vast majority of JPP's pay comes from his participation in regular-season games. Until that point, he's only missing out on the paltry per-diem that veterans get through Camp and Preseason.
by mid-July if he doesn't sign the tender. Until then, he isn't. He'll report when he's under contract so he doesn't incur fines. This really isn't complicated.
Strahan had already gotten his pay day and wanted more, plus
just didn't want to bother to show, taking the time off instead.
This is, possibly, JPP's one big shot at setting himself and his family up for life. He's not holding out on an already established contract or doing it in large part because he finds working out with the team tedious. He's doing exactly what almost every player that gets franchised does.
People going after him too hard for this really aren't being fair.

^This.
I put this in the stickied thread, too. From Important Dates:
July 15 - Deadline for Giants to sign Franchise Player DE Jason Pierre-Paul to a long-term contract. After this date, Pierre-Paul may sign only a one-year contract with the Giants for the 2015 season, and such contract cannot be extended until after Giants last regular season game.
I don't think JPP is under any obligation to report until Week 10.
Not under contract - can't participate in anything - why is this an issue. As others have pointed out, every single NFL player in the same situation does this.
show up to work for free? He's not contractually obligated to go to the mini-camp until he signs his tender (although if I'm wrong, please correct me).
But if he signs his tender he'll be working for $15m. So he choosing to not get paid, right?
if you wouldn't keep JPP based on this news then you would have let every good player from the 80s walk as well. Guys like LT, Simms, Bavaro...all of them...they all held out and missed camps.
Second, JPP's first 5 years shits all over Strahan's first 5. JPP obviously has a long long way to go to build a career as good as Strahan, but a lot of you really seem to ignore how good JPP has been over the last 5 years. He has had ONE quiet year when he was coming off injury and the team wasn't going anywhere anyway--2013.
He can sign his 1 year tender and skip every practice and game until week 10. Play hard for 6 weeks and hit free agency. His market value will still be the same.
I can see there being some slight concern about JPP
but you guys act like it's a forgone conclusion that JPP will be an ineffective player in 2015 and beyond. BAsed on WHAT? One season when JPP was coming off back surgery and a season where he still played in most of the games?
Terps, you really don't trust veteran players at all. You wanted Strahan gone before the 07 season. I remember. You just don't trust veteran players. This too is beyond dispute.
What's more likely to happen? JPP plays well 3 of the next 4 seasons or JPP comes to camp 30 pds over weight every year and sucks ass from here on out? The guy has been a good player more often than not. Last year with really only one other viable starter on the DL through the first 3 months JPP was still a plus player. Once the DL settled in he dominated for good periods.
I just don't get where the harsh negativity stems from. You guys have really short memories and at the same time you are revisionists as well.

I'm sorry but this sounds childish. Do you normally show up to work without getting paid for your time just because a new boss was hired?
why is anyone surprised that there's concern about JPP being ready

That's correct, though I think he can sign after week 10, but I believe he won't gain an accrued season if he does so he'd have to play the following season under the same franchise tag value (rather than the escalating tag value).
to be 'big timing' the Giants and sit out the mini. hes had 1 good year...and that was 4 years ago. id suggest he get his arse in camp for at least the meetings.
Gets really irked by that. Do your fucking job JPP, you get a paid a ton to do a job, now fucking do it.
The Ron Swanson in me however doesn't give a lick as long as he shows up in September ready to tear Tony Romo's head off.
As a fan, I'm delighted..Just be in shape when the bell rings for real
So, training camp doesn't mean anything, either, just like OTAs?
The "Just be in shape when the bell rings for real" means he needs just enough training camp to get his sealegs under him and start out fresh for a very long season..Do you know ANYONE who was ever in shape without some training camp? THAT'S what "just be in shape" means
there are major fines for not reporting to camp. So he would lose a lot of money by not reporting. He's going to report on the date he needs to in order to collect the $15 million for this year. He'll be at camp. All this anger here over this isn't surprising though. Such is the state of this website these days.
The Ron Swanson in me however doesn't give a lick as long as he shows up in September ready to tear Tony Romo's head off.
I wouldn't pay him a penny more than the current offer!
He is missing a great opportunity to show the GM he is all about TEAM and therefore worth the increase he may be looking for.
Michael Strahan was like a 15 year vet at that point, and secondly, JPP couldn't hold Strahan's jock.
The Ron Swanson in me however doesn't give a lick as long as he shows up in September ready to tear Tony Romo's head off.
Right now, he's not getting paid anything. Since, you know, he hasn't signed the contract and all. Just a small detail...
