NFT: Taking a big risk, but Im opening a new restaurant

Shock Therapy : 6/19/2015 9:23 am
it is going to be southern barbeque. I have been bugged to do it for a long time but I was always too nervous about the risk.
Best of luck

Starting any business is a risk, resterrants even more so! Wish you the best
Good luck
robbieballs2003 : 6/19/2015 9:26 am : link
But I hope you are doing it because you want to do it and not because someone is bugging you.
Thanks guys
Shock Therapy : 6/19/2015 9:28 am : link
Robbie, I have always wanted to do it but I think the prodding by some others made me take the leap :)

I dont want to disrespect Eric and start advertising specifics about it.
Post your collard greens
pjcas18 : 6/19/2015 9:37 am : link
recipe, I will try it and let you know if I think you will be successful.

meats are obviously the main attraction, but the collard greens are always a good indicator to me of good barbecue.

good luck, before the latest craze I was so tempted to open a wings/chili restaurant - like Hard Times in DC/NoVA (loved that place when I lived there) or Clydes in DC (great wings and great chili but also other stuff), but where I live in MA there is really nothing like that, but with BWW and Wingstop and others wings are almost fast food now. tough to compete with scale.
Dude - first rule of opening a restaurant.....
fbdad : 6/19/2015 9:38 am : link
... make your product and service great

Second rule .... manage your cashflow like a demon

Third rule .... market the shit out of it. How about telling us where it is and when you'll be opening!!
Thanks Bill
Shock Therapy : 6/19/2015 9:38 am : link
I appreciate it. I love making this food....so hopefully I can pass that enthusiasm along :)
Best of luck to you

While a lot of hard work starting your own business can be one of the most rewarding things a person can do in life and I don't mean that in the monetarily sense although that can also be rewarding as well.

Where in Upstate NY? and when? I'll be in Syracuse mid-July
I don't think Eric
MookGiants : 6/19/2015 9:40 am : link
will mind you posting where your restaurant is. It's not like you signed up just to post it, you've been here for 7 years, I'd post it.

Best of luck to you, hope you do great

Best of luck. And part of that wish is due to my own self interest. Love barbecue - lived in Texas for several years . Good BBQ in Upstate NY is nearly impossible to find.
I'm not too far
GP : 6/19/2015 9:40 am : link
from your profile location.. let us know where the restaurant is going to be!

I doubt he would mind your posting more information. Plenty of other members have repeatedly promoted their ventures here.
No doubt, as far as mentioning where it will be.

Gives us BBIers a chance to help stop in and make your venture a success.

The opening date is still up in the air because we are working with the health department to make sure everything is square. I will let everyone know the location when I start advertising. Like I said, I dont want to disrespect Eric and post too much right now.
And if within range, helping send others your way,

Eric may not even read this thread. If your are genuinely interested in advertising on BBI beyond mentioning on the forum you should probably e-mail him.

don't expect to earn any money the first year. Just build it up!
I wish you well also

And just stay with that theme.
People will suggest you add non Southern/BBQ type items and before you know it you end up with a 12 page menu.
AND DON'T FORGET THE SWEET TEA.
Best of luck to you Shock Therapy!

It takes big balls to open a new business in New York State these days, especially in something as competitive as the restaurant business.

Hope you succeed and prosper with your new project.

rule #4
idiotsavant : 6/19/2015 1:35 pm : link
don't rush people to order or to finish up and leave.

let them sit and relax as long as they want.

otherwise they will think you are running a nude bar and not return.

I love BBQ.
What kind will you be doing?
East/West Carolina?

I have many food allergies so any places which list ingredients or let me know what has dairy I always favor.
Thanks everyone

don't know much about cooking bbq
eli4life : 6/21/2015 9:54 pm : link
But my uncle had a bbq restaurant until he passed when I was younger but he always said the two biggest secrets to bbq is a goods rub (no idea what he used it was a secret he took to his grave )and a foods meat provider he always had top quality and paid a higher price for it but he would tell me his goal was to make food that will have people plan on their calender when they are coming back. I wish I saw him more than once or twice a year.

Best of luck to you and I how you have lots of Giants great decorating the restaurant!
