NFT: US Open Round 2 Discussion LOLTiger

Danny Kanell : 6/19/2015 12:35 pm
I'm a big Tiger fan but oh man, he just hit one in the rough, then fell when he got to the ball. This is so ugly.

Some notables thus far today:

Spieth - 3 (-1 today)
Day -2 (Even today)
The sidebar ad for the Open I saw earlier on BBI
Greg from LI : 6/19/2015 12:38 pm : link
Had three guys pictured on it. Two were Tiger and Ricky Fowler. Whoops.
I didn't see this for myself
FranknWeezer : 6/19/2015 12:39 pm : link
but I was told there are 16 amateurs playing, and every one of them shot lower than Tiger yesterday. Geez.
Tiger finished ahead of exactly two other golfers
Greg from LI : 6/19/2015 12:41 pm : link
Of course, one of them was Ricky Fowler.

and used to look forward to him play, now it is embarrassing. He should shut it down, this is tarnishing his reputation. I don't remember a fall off like this. The closest I can think of is David Duval and he wasn't this bad

He was, but they didn't show every error and expression Dvaul made in excrutiating detail, with replays and multiple commentaries. It was frankly hard to watch yesterday, not because Tiger was playing so poorly, but because Fox insisted on spending so much time and energy sticking it in our face.
I'd bet that when Fox
Headhunter : 6/19/2015 1:15 pm : link
decided to spend big bucks for the rights to the Open they were banking on a competitive Tiger Woods to draw eyeballs. They might as well try to keep the viewers attention if only to see Tiger embarrass himself. If he calls it quits, people will still watch, but not as much as Fox counted on for the length of the contract
.
Danny Kanell : 6/19/2015 1:22 pm : link
Spieth with a nice par putt. -5, tied for the lead.
Ian Baker-Finch was never in Tiger's class, obviously
Greg from LI : 6/19/2015 1:23 pm : link
But his collapse was even more embarassing. The guy did win a British Open:

Quote:
Baker-Finch then famously suffered a complete collapse of his game.[5] The problems were often psychological: He would hit shots flawlessly on the practice range, and then go to the first tee and hit a weak drive into the wrong fairway. In the 1995 Open Championship at St Andrews, he notoriously hooked his first round tee-shot at the first out-of-bounds on the left side of the fairway shared with the 18th, with attention focused on him as his playing partner was Arnold Palmer, competing in his final Open. In 1995 and 1996 he missed the cut, withdrew after one round, or was disqualified in all twenty nine PGA Tour events that he entered.

Baker-Finch later said: "I lost my confidence. I got to the point where I didn't even want to be out on the golf course because I was playing so poorly. I would try my hardest, but when I came out to play, I managed to find a way to miss the cut time and time again. It became a habit."[6]

After shooting a 92 in the first round of the 1997 British Open at Royal Troon, an extraordinarily bad score by tournament professional standards, Baker-Finch admitted that he cried in the locker-room that afternoon. He withdrew from the championship after one round and retired from tournament golf.[6]
I guess I'm in the minority of viewers, or maybe it's just old school
SwirlingEddie : 6/19/2015 1:27 pm : link
but I watch to see great golf and great competition. I don't watch to root for any particular individual or to gloat over his miseries.

Fox will not make their money off of hard core fans, no offense, they need the casual viewer, and Tiger Woods drew them

LOL Tiger?

If Tiger Woods never hits another fairway or sinks another put in his life he's still arguably the greatest golfer to ever live. Jack is the only other person even in the conversation. They are so far above and beyond anyone else that has ever played the game. People are so stupid.

Spieth -6 with a birdie on 17. This kid is awesome.

There are a few other guys in the conversation: certainly Hogan and Snead, who only played the Open once (and won), I'd throw Gary Player and his 150 or so wins in there as well. there are others but the career grand slam guys are all in the discussion.

i don't know how you can
grizz299 : 6/19/2015 3:04 pm : link
call Tiger or Jack great.
My gosh, Kim, the North Korean dictator doesn't even work at the game, yet every scorecard he turns in is 18. 18 holes in one each and every time....Jones, Snead, Palmer, Jack and Tiger don't compare.
I wonder if Tiger wasn't on 'roids. He always had a different musculature, maybe just weight lifting, still I always wondered and this collapse might be the confirmation. Just a thought not an indictment or allegation.

I doubt it. Building muscle doesn't really help your putting or short game and that's where these guys score. There are plenty of guys that can hit the snot out of the ball.

He's had a lot of issues over the last month with vertigo apparently. Walking down 18 he collapsed because of it and then hit his head and said he was seeing stars. He then wobbled over to the bunker and hit a real nice bunker shot. Crazy to watch

Day can continue.

Tiger is looking more and more like he's done. That isn't to minimize what he's achieved. He might well be the best golfer ever. But he's 39 now IIRC, and has struggled for years. A lot of golfers win will into their 40s, but it doesn't look like Tiger will join that group. All those injuries and intensive training may have shortened his career.

Is killing phil. He's looking another bogey. He better right the ship or else he will be closer to missing the cut than challenge for the leqd.

Didnt David Duval have similar struggles? From what I remember he totally fell apart shortly after winning the British and was commonly shooting in the 80s.
Tim Brando idiot
Pete in VA : 6/19/2015 6:29 pm : link
I've been watching the online coverage. Brando is doing the "featured group" with Mark Brooks. Brando has been saying stuff that Brooks has had to correct him on, or which has left Brooks speechless. He just does"t seem to know golf. My favorite was his reference to a "wasted" area.
These announcers are real bad
schabadoo : 6/19/2015 7:00 pm : link
And this course looks in terrible shape.
Some of the greens are a bit bumpy
Pete in VA : 6/19/2015 7:17 pm : link
but otherwise it's just dried out, which doesn't affect it in a negative way. I like it.
This course is awful
arniefez : 6/19/2015 7:20 pm : link
It's not a U.S. Open test. Random bounces and bad greens is fine for the open championship not the U.S. open
As far as Tiger goes
arniefez : 6/19/2015 7:26 pm : link
Anyone who plays at even a club level can see he's standing too close the ball, his hands are too close to his body and his left side is flying open. Tiger has forgotten more about the golf swing today then 99.99% of golfers will know in their lifetimes. So he's obviously doing these things on purpose. Maybe to protect his back and knees, maybe to prevent hooking the ball or maybe for reasons only known to him. Keep in mind Stenson was number 235 in the world in 2012 and top 5 in 2014. So guys can lose it and get it back. But no one has the mental baggage and physical limitations that Tiger does. The odds are very heavily weighted we've seen his last tour win forget about majors.
Age matters more in golf than people appreciate
Jim in Fairfax : 6/19/2015 8:16 pm : link
75% of majors are won by players 35 and under. 92% are won by players 40 and under.

I think Duval had some mental issues, but also had a bad back. And it was such a bummer that Azinger got sick. Loved him.

Like all sports, it favor s youth above all else.
I always thought Tiger was on the juice.
drkenneth : 6/19/2015 8:54 pm : link
He fell apart physically and mentally. He's also a strange dude, I mean he's basically in the child actor group.

He is one of the greatest, not the greatest. He's done.
why
MookGiants : 6/20/2015 2:20 pm : link
do the players continue to bitch about 18 being a par 4 or par 5? It doesn't matter in relation to the scoreboard. They shouldn't play it any differently if its a par 4 or a par 5. What the hell am I missing?
