my condolences to the families and friends of the victims; and my condolences to the African-American community, as this was a shocking hate crime that harkens back to the ugly pre-civil rights days.

Most were probably in shock to what was taking place and it really doesn't take very long to fire off multiple shots.

I've wondered myself if I'd forgive a guy like that if that was one of my family members. After thinking through the iterations, I think I would, it would be the only palatable option but it would probably take me years, not the next day. Jeez.

The mood down here in the Lowcountry is very somber today. There’s no way to overstate the importance of the Mother Emmanuel Church for this area -- it’s the oldest AME church in the south. The Pastor was also a SC State Senator and a Community Leader. Charleston is known as the Holy City because the tallest structures in town are the steeples on the many churches, and Mother Emmanuel stands tall along Marion Square and Meeting Street.

This maniac drives over 100 miles from upstate to bring his hatred into this beautiful city. I can't begin to fathom what was going on in his mind for him to sit with these folks for an hour and then go off.

But I’m very proud of the way the all of the citizens of Charleston have reacted to this hateful crime. There’s been a lot of compassion and offerings of help to the families of the victims.

Most of the victims were very, very old. If he shot and killed the one guy in his 20s first, then the rest of victims might not have been able to do anything.

Greg from LI : 6/19/2015 3:37 pm : link
And I see no reason to forgive such a person.
Can we forgive him
Randy in CT : 6/19/2015 3:40 pm : link
then kill him? I'd be willing to make that compromise.

the main focal point of this post but the subsequent trial will further highlight the frustrations of black people and the concerns Eric mentioned earlier last week if the assailant is deemed anything other than guilty and isn't prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.It will loudly state that there will continue to not be any justice for anyone like you.I hope justice prevails....I truly do.

You can't possibly believe that because he is white that the prosecutors wouldn't somehow do everything in their power to prosecute him and/or that there would be jurors that would give him a pass.

I'm surprised that anyone would even entertain the idea.

The one good thing coming out of this horrible attack is that people in the town are not divided. They are coming together white and black to grieve and pray. This is not some white cop who shot a black kid under dubious circumstances. It's a psycho racist terrorist (which ever label floats your boat) who killed 9 people in a church during Bible study. I have a hard time even typing that. The families of the victims have already forgiven this crazed killer. I don't think we need to use this to stir up more racial divide.
Very proud

Anything that references, reminds, shows support for a divisive, racist, violent heritage needs to wiped away, burnt, and trampled underfoot forever. The Pastor of the church was one of my frat brothers...

Because of statements like this from the Chief Magistrate...

I sort of understand how psychopaths
mrvax : 6/20/2015 9:17 am : link
have no feelings toward others, shooting people is like shooting a manikin to normal folks. I just can't get a grip on how he decided to go to that church, at that time in that place and do what he did.

Hopefully the prison system will have free reign to open that kid up and see what made him tick. Maybe a little good will come out of this tragedy if the information can stop the next psycho.
