Who is the next Giants breakout star?

Headhunter : 6/20/2015 3:17 pm
OBJ burst on the scene an became a huge star. Do we have anyone on the roster that will become a star? I'm going to go with Devon Kennard becoming an elite LB. who you got is anyone?

I'd love to agree with you, but I'm reserved on this given how Jaquan Williams worked out((started with injuries) after a very fine rookie year
still have hopes

for Moore. More likely though is Donnell. Last year may have just been the beginning for him. With OBJ and hopefully a healthy Cruz, he could be the guy who defenses overlook. Lots of opportunity for him.

I base a lot of it on Carl Banks. Banks is fair and certainly not a homer in evaluating players, he is a huge believer in Kennard
star

You can argue Hankins is already a star (as much as a DT not named Suh can be), but I think he firmly establishes himself as a top 5 DT in the NFL this season.

As far as sexier positions go, hopefully Moore or Odi can become a "star". This D needs someone that can draw doubles and grab 10+ sacks across from JPP.
and Cruz will re-establish himself as a star

Ruben Randle can be a stud.

Also hard for a ol to be a star but richburg and Pugh at their new spots may prove to be an enormous value to thus team

I think it is going to be Damontre Moore or Kennard.
Thing is there are quite a few that could be pretty darn good

Donnell, Washington, Bromley, Wynn, Kennard, Richburg, Collins and maybe Taylor, Berhe, Williams or Moore. Love the number of young guys that have an upside.

You left out Brandon Mosley!

One of the most intriguing positives to come out of mini-camp was seeing Mosley getting first team reps at both left guard (with Pugh at left tackle) and right tackle. I take it as a sign that the coaches think he may be ready to realize his potential. Here is a blurb from a 2012 pre-draft Bob McGinn article on the OL prospects (McGinn is the guy who gets the best inside draft info)....
Quote:
Played two years in junior college as a TE-LB. Moved to O-line by the Tigers in spring 2010 and started two years at RT. "Developmental guy," one scout said. "I really like his demeanor. Tough. I think he's got a chance to be something but it will be a year or two away." Largest hands (11) of the tackles. Strong, punishing run blocker. "Their line was atrocious this year and he was the best one they had," another scout said.
Injuries and position changes may have slowed down his development. If he can have a healthy camp (and season), he might actually turn out to be a plus player at right tackle for the Giants. And wouldn't that be something considering all we're currently hoping for is someone who won't be a liability.
You can make the argument that Hankins already broke out

My prediction: DaMonster and Landon Collins

Corey Washington, he's had issues adjusting but I think that he proves he belongs in preseason and then goes on turn some heads.
The guy that should be the most ready to be a breakout star
wgenesis123 : 6/20/2015 8:56 pm : link
is Nassib. Hopefully he won't get the chance to prove me correct. I will go with Moore on defense. I am hopefull his quickness can be utilized by Spags. The guy can block kicks, there must be some talent to cultivate.

I think we will be very happy with Vereen

This offense plays well to his skill set.

He does all the little things that TC mandates.....our OL will be stronger pass blocking then run blocking....

gonna see a lot of him catching passes in the backfield for some good gains and he's very good at keeping the chains moving, might not have a lot of insane plays (although i've seen him make 20+ yard TD catches) but he's gonna be a strong part of the offense, very productive
Collins

"star" applies to any OL, but I think Richburg is gonna emerge as a legit pro bowl level OC, this year or next.
D Moore,

Hankins

If he isn't already. If not, Collins.
all of the usual suspects.
grizz299 : 6/21/2015 5:59 am : link
But how about Beason?. We got him for what a sixth round choice (or thereabouts). So he didn't have much value, hasn't really played in two years, he stands a chance right now to emerge as a changing team leader.

There are so many exciting young players, I don't ever recall a list like we have and it's one of the reasons I think we're looking at the emergence of a superb team.

If he improves his coverage skills he could be another Seth Joyner, the rare SAM who could rush the QB, stuff the run, and cover, too.
Seth Joyner?

How 'bout another fooking Carl Banks, who was damned good in all three phases of D.

Banks played outside in a 3-4 defense, Joyner played in a 4-3. So Joyner is the better comparison. Also, as much as I love Carl Banks, his resume isn't quite up to Joyner's....

Banks: 39.5 sacks, 3 INT's, one time All-Pro (1987)
Joyner: 52 sacks, 20 INT's, three time All-Pro (1991-93)
Carl Banks at his 2-3 year peak was a much better player
BlueLou : 6/21/2015 5:20 pm : link
Than Seth Joyner ever was. And I don't need stats to tell me that. 52 sacks means Joyner blitzed a lot, which opportunity he wouldn't have had, if he played Carl Banks' position opposite LT. Playing with LT and Carson also limited Banks'opportunites to go to pro bowls.

Meanwhile Joyner played on Buddy Ryan coached teams, which pad pass rushing and int stats, and played with DLs that included Reggie White, Jerome Brown, and Clyde Simmons, All Pros or pro bowlers themselves.

Maybe I didn't watch Joyner enough, and I remember him as a vicious hitter too, but I don't recall him having Banks' overall skills

Joyner made All-Pro three years in a row, so he must've had a pretty good 2-3 year peak and any argument about the players surrounding Joyner can be made about the players surrounding Banks. They both played on great defenses that featured multiple Pro Bowl players and future Hall of Famers

I'm not going to sit here and argue the reasons why a guy on the Eagles was better than a guy on the Giants. They were both great players. For you to say that Banks at his peak "was a much better player" is just plain wrong. At best you can try to argue why he was Joyner's equal. If you asked an objective observer who followed both of their careers more than casually, I would be surprised if they said Banks was better than Joyner.

Regardless, I used Joyner as the gold standard because Kennard plays over the TE in a 4-3 defense just as Joyner did.

p.s.-- from Wikipedia....
Quote:
In one Monday Night Football game in 1991 against the Houston Oilers, Joyner, playing with a 102-degree fever, recorded eight solo tackles, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and two sacks. He was named NFL Player of the Year by Sports Illustrated that very same year and received runner-up honors for Associated Press NFL Defensive Player of the Year.
On defense Kennard is ready to have a Pro Bowl season ....
Manny in CA : 6/21/2015 5:56 pm : link
I just hope the transition to the Spags defense doesn't slow him down too much.

On offense, Washington has benefited from the absence of injured players to show his stuff. When Beckham comes back (the starting "X"), he will be pushed back and will fight it out with Randle for the starting "Y".

Eventually, I think Washington is the better player because I think he's the smarter and more football-in-the-air aggressive of the two (even though both have reputations for forgetting plays).
Joyner, Banks...Bonecrusher Giabrodnik...I don't care.
Klaatu : 6/21/2015 6:49 pm : link
As long as he stays healthy, he'll be productive. Unfortunately, he's emblematic of what's wrong with the Giants - too much talent on IR and not on the field. I pray that changes this year.

Averaged a tackle every 10 snaps played and a sack every 55, twice as productive as Kiwi when adjusted for number of snaps. He had 32 tackles and 5.5 sacks in 302 plays. He's had a productive offseason in which he's added some weight. I think he's got the highest ceiling of the possible guys to start opposite JPP, I think he'll be the week 1 starter, and I think double digit sacks are definitely within reach.

I'd absolutely love for him to break out and I think he's got all the tools to do so. Versatile with the size/strength to play on the LOS but athletic enough to play LBer in a 4-3. Has already flashed pass rushing ability as well as some nice physicality. He's also got Spags going for him, and by that I mean he has the skill set and versatility Spags likes to utilize in creative ways. I definitely think he's a prime candidate.

I'm also so snake bit by how bad the Giants have been at drafting LBers, which makes me hesitant to make him the first name out of my mouth regarding players that may break out this season.
we'd better all hope that the next breakout star

"Breakout star" to me means someone that is known by fans across the NFL. Doesn't need to be OBJ levels but should probably be on track to be a pro bowler.

Defense: Prince Amukamara - He becomes a household name as he turns into a shutdown corner. A combination of a stronger supporting cast, a more aggressive scheme will highlight his skill set. This is the year he ups his takeaways and a few big pick 6's get him on sportscener. Pro bowl appearance to follow.

Offense: Rueben Randle - Fantasy sports give RR the edge over the line. Randle had almost 1,000 yards last year and in this contract year he takes it to a new level. The good news is that the Giants get a great year out of the young wideout. The bad news is that he prices himself off the team.
