It's always a good practice to be aware of your surroundings and be vigilant, not necessarily for terrorist threats but just as a personal safety precaution against crime, accidents, or other unanticipated events of life.
And really, if there is a credible terrorist threat based on credible intelligence, most people won't know about it, as it is counter-productive to announce the details of potential threats, which will just tip the terrorist perpetrators.
Well said. Terrorist threat is a loaded phrase without any real meaning. Who is a terroist? What is a threat? Details matter, and that info is better kept by those who can do something about it. As it is, I don't see any reason to do anything any differently
when unconfirmed rumors are posted, a joke is as appropriate as freaking out or making cautious plans. What does one do to avoid a terrorist attack anyway? Not ride the subway? Not fly?
At least a joke deflects the fact that there isn't a damn thing we really can do without knowing the specifics.
If u see something, anything make sure u speak up. The people are the first defense. Not the Feds or police. Let one of us assess the person or bag or anything. Don't just say hey fuck it it's probably nothing
pay attention, speak up if something doesn't jive. Daily common sense especially if you live in a busy place, this is now the world we live in, be aware.
Article in times today about how since 9 11 more attacks have come from white extremists then islamic terrorists.
But this isn't necessarily the smoking gun that you are trying to make this out to be.
These are two very different kinds of threats that should not be compared in terms of threat and prevention.
One is a domestic extremist organization that has ready access to the targets in our nation. Also, in trying to collect against and to prevent attacks by these groups, our government relies on Title 18 (law enforcement authorities pertaining to criminal and penal code), which actually makes it much more difficult to carry out preventative matters due to the Constitutional protection of U.S. citizens/persons/organizations. In many ways, while the access to collect may be easier for these groups, the authorities is more difficult.
As for Islamic extremist organizations, they must go through longer and more extensive preparation and planning to attack our nation due to their locations outside of our borders. And even sleeper cells in our nation aren't necessarily going to have easier times because they usually stand out and are most likely being collected on as result of their continued contact with their foreign leaderships (who reside overseas). Also since the collection and action against these foreign organizations fall under both Title 10 (military operations) and Title 50 (intelligence operations focused on foreign intelligence), it is actually easier to collect against and prevent these organizations from ever getting far enough to conduct attacks in the U.S.
It's comparing apples to oranges, basically.
Terrorists threats for around the 4th has been a hot topic lately
Article in times today about how since 9 11 more attacks have come from white extremists then islamic terrorists.
Read it. Not really a good article. It assesses the level of threat by the number of fatal attacks, while totally ignoring all the failed attempts by Islamic terrorists such as the shoe bomber, underwear bomber, Manhatten car bomber, and many others we don't hear about. If you are to evaluate the relative levels of threat, you need to count the failed attempts due to Homeland Security, FBI vigilance.

But that's not the impression the OP gives. It's not just, "hey there are a lot of news, so be careful out there" impression that the OP is giving. It's more, "I have some inside information that there will be an impending attack soon in NYC or DC." "Impending" being the operative word.
I don't think anyone is unaware of the news. It's just a vague post on a subject that is obviously going to make people react or worry. If it's in reference to a story that's been reported, just specify that. I don't think that's asking much.

I dont want to divert from the thread. But the article also discusses the fact that threats from white extremists plots have been foiled too including ambitious explosive plans that didnt detonate. It also discusses that law enforcement officials view the extremist white threat as more dangerous by large numbers.
That being said I take your point and think its a good one. I just thought the article was eye opening and as I said interesting. Of course one terrorist attack from an islamist could dwarf that all rathet fast. I wasnt trying to play down the islamist threat which personally I fear much more.
There were a bunch of anti-terrorism cops on the 6 train yesterday

Point taken. And I think its good to be reminded that Islamists are not the only serious threat out there
It is an awfully odd topic to do a hit and run thread on. Unless Modus is Jack Bauer and he's torturing a terrorist right now, he has some 'splainin' to do...
It's cyclical. Guess where most Americans are now? ON vacation. Guess where that means they will be? In tourist locations, airports, trains, bus stations, etc. Once people are on the move that much this is protocol and has been for about 14 years now.
You're also in the midst of Ramadan so the nincompoops who aren't actually Muslim who are following those radical idiots are generally asked to carry out more attacks during this time. Eids and Ramadan incur the same thing each year, pleas from the wackos for the non observant weirdos who hitch their wagon on ISIS or Al-Qaeda or Boko Haram to carry out pre-planned attacks.
I have some friends who work in counter terrorism and they mentioned some "credible chatter" over the last week involving NYC and DC. Additionally, NASA was apparantly locked down last night. Agencies in NYC and DC on heightened alert.
That's all I've got so far. If I hear anything more, I'll pass it along.
But your friends are irresponsible in telling you about some chatter, especially if what they were alluding to is classified intelligence reports. Giving a hint is worse than not giving you any information at all in the intelligence field. I understand that they wanted to keep their friend informed, but what they did was one of the big taboos of intelligence field, divulging less than half information, which just leads to a lot of speculations.
And if they work for NCTC, I would take what they say with a large grain of salt. Those guys see boogeymen anywhere they want to find one.

I'm not a good flyer, but Friday it will be more a case off getting the weekend started a little early.
I think one or two of the folks in the row in front of us would have preferred a bomb.
This isn't me having a stick up my ass. I'm not offended... But it just seems like tempting fate.

"Hans. Booby".
It doesn't make sense for us all to phone in tips individually, we should probably just collect them and forward to Paulie.

I'm not sure about that. Yeah it ends badly for Ellis, but what a life he lived.
