Giants 2015 Positional Breakdown: Safeties - ( New Window )
Can we call these something else?
SwirlingEddie : 6/24/2015 9:03 am : link
I've read far too many stories the last couple of seasons about Giants Safeties and breakdowns.

Good one Eddie
Typo alert: Berhe's name is missing from the first paragraph.

Rookie 5th rounder played all 16 games...
Good writeup though.
Merritt is pretty realistic about the big concern:
Quote:
“I think it is extremely hard (for a rookie to start in this defense),” said New York Giants Safeties Coach David Merritt. “(The safety is) an extension of the defensive coordinator. Whatever call comes in, you need to be able to hear the call, accept the call, and then spit it back out to your fellow teammates. For a rookie to come in and have that pressure, to be the extension of the defensive coordinator, it is extremely difficult.”
Well, since all the candidates are either rookies or very close to it, we could be in for an interesting September. And I don't mean that in a good way.
Good write up again Eric.

They better pray that the pass rush develops quickly in to a force to protect the secondary.

Spags is quite good at helping out his Safeties, imo..

Curuious, what year did you start following the Giants, Victor?

My earliest recollections are of 1970 or so. Tarkenton was still here. I remember home games being blacked out.
My dad schooled me in the team history as a little kid. I was born in 1964.
This group can be the

Breakdowns

and other mental lapses are very likely this year. At most other positions, we at least have a few veteran starters. Not so at safety. We have no veterans at that position. The defense is also complicated, and the coaches admit it's hard for a rookie to come in and make the calls correctly. I agree with KWALL2, that this group could be the biggest problem this season.
I just don't get it......
Doomster : 6/24/2015 10:58 am : link
The Giants basically are going into this season, with zero experience at safety.....that is one hell of a gamble.....we criticised Reese a few years back for no depth at the position....isn't this worse?

Collins looks like a keeper and will grow into it.....but if too much pressure is put on him, and he makes mistakes, how will this affect him mentally? Confidence is huge in this game....after Collins what do we have? If Taylor can stay healthy, that is huge....but I just don't see Berhe bringing anything to the table at that position..... the rest, are like Berhe....

Spags may really have to simplify the coverage back there....there just is not enough time to get this defense together...as the season progresses, and guys learn the system, the defense will get better....how long it takes, will determine if this team makes the playoffs....
what's
Eric from BBI : Admin : 6/24/2015 11:09 am : link
fascinating is it appears the Giants made very little effort to retain Rolle. And they know him better than anyone. The narrative too is that TC loved him as a locker room guy.

They must think he really is done. It will be interesting to see how he does in Chicago.
Rolle
Doomster : 6/24/2015 11:24 am : link
was a 9M cap hit, the last three seasons.....

There is no doubt, that the Giants wanted to get him on the cheap....as it stands, it seems what they offered was much less than what Chicago offered him for 2015, 5M.....I would be surprised if the Giants offered him 2-3M....and while he got a multiyear deal(maybe the Giants only offered him a one year deal), he is easily cut with no dead money after the first season....it's a multiyear deal, in name only....

Rolle, I think, can still outplay the safeties on the Giants....his experience gives him a huge advantage over Collins, while Collins would definitely be physically better....As Eric said, it will be interesting to see the year he has with Chicago.....
Something was up in advance
JonC : 6/24/2015 11:36 am : link
the beat and other players seemed to believe he wouldn't be back, and had alluded to it in the media.
seems Rolle/agent knew well in advance they wouldn't be able to
JonC : 6/24/2015 11:39 am : link
bridge the gap on a new deal, or Rolle was ready for a change of scenery. He was Tucked, and NYG has done fairly well pulling the trigger on players they believe have begun to sharply decline relative to cost.
You have to cut bait on these guys because of the cap.
Victor in CT : 6/24/2015 11:42 am : link
Ideally you would like to have a little more experience left behind, but I still agree with the Branch Rickey "better to get rid if them a year too soon than a year too late" theory.

Except for O'Hara, Diehl, and Snee.
Maybe Spags
mrvax : 6/24/2015 12:04 pm : link
can start off basic and move the complexity in as the young guys learn? It's probably not going to work well if the guys cannot understand an assignment, alignment or whatever. They are all young and inexperienced.

I suspect Jersey Joe is probably having a cow after reading that article.

It appears that way. Rolle's play really fell off dramatically over the last half of last season and I think they made the right move here. Now let's hope these young kids can keep the mental mistakes to a minimum.

I suspect those few probably played a part in modifying their policy. Snee might be a HoF, he's bound to get some preferential treatment.
Spags defense won a Super Bowl with safeties with less talent

The position is a concern right now
Torrag : 6/24/2015 10:48 pm : link
Collins penciled in as a starter...so much for not just handing rookies the keys without earning them. The other starter is being bandied about as possibly Behre, Taylor or an UDFA.

Expect severe growing pains en route to hopefully a good young group of safeties. It is going to take some time.
We always complain
DavidinBMNY : 6/24/2015 10:49 pm : link
Last year it was these guys have seen better years. Brown isn't the same, Rolle lost a step, Now we have all young guys including a Nick Saban Alabama safety and were concerned. I'd rather take my chance with younger guys.
I suspect they saw enough in Berhe last year to
BlueLou : 6/25/2015 12:20 am : link
have some confidence that he can be the guy to read Os and get everyone lined up. Didn't he do that in college?

Hence TC's annoyance at his calf injury to this point. Of course Berhe still has to beat out Cooper Taylor to start, too. I think Collins, the rookie, making the calls, is the backup plan...
Safeties
Dragon : 6/25/2015 4:37 am : link
The key for who ever we have back there at safety and right now it looks like Cooper and Collins is very simple. How good are our CB's and LB's in coverage. As we can see both of these guys are big physical kids that can run and hit yet also seem to be good in space. Now if we expect them to be able to cover up every mistake made by the CB's and LB's make the early season will be brutal.

We need our CB's to play like really good cover guys and our LB's to not let TE's and RB's run wild in the secondary. The early part of the season will be a period of great learning for our entire defense but even more so for our safeties. Will we see them playing it safe don't let anyone get behind you and being relied upon to come up and make the tackle or will they be asked to play the defense as called from check downs.

I'm not concerned about the safeties they are going to be young and I truly believe you don't learn much on the sidelines. We have two big guys with good athletic ability can they stay healthy, develop together and continue to learn this defense. Some of those things will be out of their control we could see some major changes if the team does not do well again this season. This year we should see two guys that will come up and deliver big hits that will also be out of position at times nothing new about that for any defense in the NFL. They just need to continue to improve each game and trust each other and the guys playing in front of them. The calls will come from Collins but he will be getting the calls so that to will improve as the season and games go on. If our season becomes wins or losses because of our safeties play then an 8-8 season would be very lucky.

I don't see how that will happen you have to protect your weak point until
It proves itself to be a strength. That will not happen in six or eight games it may be most of a season or more. Now we are being told that the rest of the defense is very good they had better be since these two guys are going to need all the help they can get.
True.....

During our Super Bowl run with Michael Johnson (rookie 7th RDC) and Craig Dahl (undrafted rookie FA) our starting safeties.

Believe it or not, on paper, we've got much better talent and experience on this roster.
I have the feeling that the safety position could be the achilles heel
Jersey55 : 6/26/2015 5:12 pm : link
of this team and its aspirations for the 2015 season and if thats true then Reese needs to take a hard look at some of his decisions for this position. There were some decent players available during the offseason, not many, but Reese stood pat and watched all of them disappear and now we have what we have, I hope we're successful at safety but I must admit to being not too optimistic and I do hope these young guys prove me wrong...Reese must have felt the same way about all of this because of the way he jumped up to get Landry...
Reese made an offer to Devin McCourty.
Klaatu : 6/26/2015 6:54 pm : link
McCourty decided to re-sign with the Patriots. The Giants also reached out to Da'Norris Searcy, but he chose to sign with Tennessee. I don't know if they ever made serious offers to Rahim Moore, Ron Parker, Marcus Gilchrist, or any other UFA Safeties, but to say that Reese "stood pat and watched all of them disappear" is incorrect.

I actually would prefer to see a 3 safety rotation with Behre and Taylor starting and Collins #3. Although not vets at least they have played some. Collins would move into the starting safety role with experience.

But then again Collins comes from Alabama which ran a pro style defense so maybe he'll be ready quickly? All I know is that I suspect we will be torched early and often til experience sets in. Just hope we don't lose games in the learning process.
There are going to be growing pains for sure

That's to be expected. Hopefully they aren't too long & the guys learn from their mistakes & become better players.

& if the DL becomes a force, that'll help a ton obviously.

The DL will key our season along with a starting CB play; LB Beason against the run & Kennard rushing from LB.

Bottom line is we need to put heat on the QB and I think we can with both Kennard and Thomas who is cat quick and can burst gaps. Spags will do all sorts of things with this group to create matchup problems.

However, when we don't get to the QB I think we'll suffer the consequences of watching our safeties being faked out. I think our safeties will be SUPERB vs the run and with tackling but suspect when it comes versus the pass we'll be seeing broken plays deep down the field.

I expect DRC, Prince and McBride to be shaking their heads early and often in the season.
