All the talk, innuendo, accusations and theories that say the Giants’ transcendent star receiver is too sensitive and has issues with teammates for getting on him when he’s at his most vulnerable? Odell Beckham Jr. wants to set the record straight. “I have no problem with anybody on the team or inside or anything,” Beckham told The Post on Wednesday night in an exclusive and brief interview. |
Or maybe it wasn't a big deal in the first place? Someone posted on another thread yesterday, who had heard the actual interview, said that if you listen to the context in which he said it, it really was never as big a deal as it was made out to be.
Seems to me that Beckham Jr. learned a very valuable lesson and that should hopefully help him as he learns more about the 'media game' in the Big Apple. Be careful what you say and how you say it because it can and will be twisted into whichever way the interviewer wants it to go.

To me the most surprising thing was the way many (and I mean many) BBIers immediately accepted this as gospel, even though only one rag (NY Post?) was making any noise about this. There really wasn't a shred of evidence that this was true in any meaningful way, but man, did OBJ get his shit jumped here.
And folks here ought to know by now that if Graziano has anything good to say about the Giants he does a very good job of keeping it to himself. Let there be any way to twist something into a negative and he's off to the races.

BMac - IMO, a small part of that is because OBJ sometimes gives off the impression that he may be a bit of a sensitive type of guy... based on his on-field persona and some of the things he's said on social media (like his comments about being apart from his friends for instance a few months ago). He may not be as sensitive as he sometimes appears to be... but I don't blame some for believing that maybe he has been a bit overly sensitive to the ribbing he's been getting. Shit, even Eli called him out a lil bit about it! So if a guy who knows him personally and shares a locker room with him seemingly 'drank the Kool-Aid', I can't fault some BBIers for doing the same.
Another part of it is the whole 'WR Diva' thing.
But I think most of it is just a dumb interviewer taking OBJ's words and realizing that if he's going to sell papers he needs to sensationalize OBJ's story a bit more and make it out to be a bigger deal than what it really was. I think OBJ was/is truly getting tired of the constant ribbing and what-not he's getting from teammates... I just don't think it's nearly big enough of a deal to make any kind of story out of it (and I think OBJ probably feels the same way).
And lastly... it's the off-season!

Much of the time, BBI'ers are being completely ironic when they rag on Beckham.

Irony doesn't translate well on message boards, and I think you may giving too much credit here.

I call it the Silly Season, but you may be right. It just seems that many are always ready to believe the negative, with no proof needed.
I think Beckham is in a fish bowl and not really handling it well yet but again he's basically a rookie who became an overnight sensation faster than anyone on Earth realized. I'll cut him some slack for youth, fame, etc but he still seems like a real me first pain in the ass sometimes. He's a real product of this generation of instant fame, must have notoriety and constant self validation through social media. He'll buy his followers and likes and females swooning over him, companies fighting for his endorsements before he'll follow an older grounded vet who has probably never seen that level of fame.
It used to be that people you worked with who had experience, or friends or family could always humble and ground you, but if you can pop open your phone and see thousands of people fawning over you, how much will that really affect you? If one guy tells you to tone it down and your ego sees 10,000 girls asking to marry you and companies breathing down your neck to take their money, who are you going to listen to, especially at that age?
"Yes, the perception that he is thin-skinned bothered him, and it is untrue, Beckham insisted to The Post."
Uh..it bothered him, therefore he is thin-skinned about being called thin-skinned which is...this is going to go in circles forever, thanks NY Post and shitty reporting.
"He'll buy his followers and likes and females swooning over him, companies fighting for his endorsements before he'll follow an older grounded vet who has probably never seen that level of fame."

A serious accusation? It's an opinion based on his social media profiles and petulant behavior. I didn't accuse him of rape or theft or joining ISIS, I am opining that he'll be influenced by the outpouring of love he gets daily in his face by legions of fans. Is that so far off base?
But make no bones about it, BEckham is crazier than a shit house rat.

I read that as suggesting he doesn't listen to veterans. Sorry if that's not what you intended.

It halfway is what I intended. I can see him being taken aside by Cruz or someone else and hearing what they say, nodding and understanding then on his way back home looking at his phone and seeing everyone showering him with love on instagram/FB/twitter and thinking...maybe I am doing it right and that guy just doesn't get it. It has to be terribly conflicting to hear something from an authority figure or teammate with experience and then hear how amazing you are at life on social media.
Anytime he wants validation for his choices all he has to do is look to social media and ignore anyone saying anything negative to him. I'm more postulating here, but if you think about it, is it that far fetched to think someone would seek solace from adoring fans when they feel dejected by those they work with?
Thank you Dr. King. Well said
I think that comparison is totally unfair to toilet bugs. You owe them a big apology.

You've been hyping up the media driven, chicken little bullshit ever since they 'stories' have been coming out. Why should anyone take you seriously?
