Rookie symposium makes exception for La'el Collins

Jolly Blue Giant : 6/26/2015 8:51 am
I read that the NFL made an exception and allowed Collins to attend the rookie symposium since it is for drafted players only. From what I understand, the symposium contains lectures about money management, avoiding off the field problems, etc....why on Earth should the NFL not invite any rookie that has signed an NFL contract? What is the logic behind this?
capacity constraints

I would guess

And the fact that most UDFAs wont be in the league for long
So with the whole

Domestic violence campaign, etc...the NFL can pick up the tab for a few more hotel rooms? Seems strange to me....
If they were going to make an exception for him

It should have been letting him enter the supplemental draft. What are they hard core on the rules sometimes and soft on them others? Silly.
He's a special case when it comes to the rookie symposium

But when it comes to the supplemental draft, which is actually a matter of competitive balance, rules are the rules, no exceptions. Got it.
If he wasn't a cowboy

Maybe he's the featured speaker

For the "how to avoid pissing off a hooker" part of the curriculum.

I would still have issue with the lack of consistency and the decision not to allow him into the supplemental draft. I stated as much (about the issues for treating him as URFA rather than supplemental) before he signed, so yes.
A total non-story

Yikes!
Collins IS a special case for this purpose.

He has more guaranteed money coming than all but the first 58 picks. Not only is he a mortal lock to make the Dallas roster, he's the only UDFA to whom the symposium material indisputably applies.

I can understand not inviting all the UDFAs. The increase in size would be enormous, and most of those kids will never have any NFL money to manage.
The coverage sort of hints that Collins had to pay his own way.

That would make a lot of sense, since his agent/PR firm had to lobby to get him permission to attend.
It should definitely be for all first year players

If there isn't enough room, then have it on different days.
how many UDFAs on the Giants?
ron mexico : 6/26/2015 11:59 am : link
10,11?

Thats 320 people league wide to fly out, house, feed and run the course for. Most of whom won't be in the league come late august.

Thats just not practical. One off cases where the team or the player shoulders the extra cost is practical.

And this is completely different than the supplemental draft.

i would HOPE every team

has a mini one of these for all rookies or frankly any player that wants to attend. they don't need to have the keynote speech type stuff from Cris Carter to have very valuable class room setting discussions on many of these topics.
with his record of decision making

He should have to go twice
just the first step
