Early Season Defense...

AF Russ in Rome : 6/26/2015 1:21 pm
If I remember correctly our defense early in Spag's tenure was horrible. It took a few games for everyone to buy in and do their job before we started seeing the benefits of the system. After reading Beason's comments on the complexity and fluidity of the scheme I think it will be a huge problem early on. We should expect the first quarter to half the season to be somewhat brutal even compared to what we've come accustom to. A complex system with a lot of changes coupled with young inexperienced players is going to equal a lot of mistakes and players thinking too much. I really hope they get a handle on it quick and minimize the embarrassment. Hopefully our offense can keep up with high scoring and at least keep us at .500 through the beginning.
I do not expect to see 2007 2.0

Spag's will coach the D to be aggressive, make plays and not sit back. Similar to last years offence, the unit may need time to Gel.

If this defense makes just 1 stop in the 4th quarter to win a game than we're already ahead of last year. I'm hoping thay make many.
I think a mitigating factor in this...
BMac : 6/26/2015 1:31 pm : link
..is Spag's ability to adapt/change things on the fly. I think you're right that it's going to take some time and pain, but it could happen faster than you think.
Also Spags has a lot more experience now

then he did as a rookie DC back in 2007.

Hopefully he has more expertise in installing new systems then he did back then
The defense

lacks talent and depth. Barring a few players making huge leaps the defense will be at best mediocrity.

But he had a lot more talent on the DL in 2007. And AP at MLB.
While we might struggle

It won't be because of lack of buyin. I think the defensive players are looking for the change whereas the 07 team had a lot of veterans that were not eager to change.

I think NY Blue

has it exactly right. The old team was resistant, maybe in the same way that they resisted Eli.

These guys are anxious for alternatives, I'm not sure it's going to take a long time. A long time, hopefully, is pre-season and exhibition.
The biggest factors in the 2007 defense's slow start:
Big Blue Blogger : 6/26/2015 4:28 pm : link
1) They played the two best offenses in the NFC - by far -in Weeks 1 & 2.

2) Michael Strahan wasn't in football shape.

Antonio Pierce was terrific for three months in 2005. Then he busted his ankle and was never the same player. By the time Spags got him, he was running on fumes, notwithstanding that one great play in the NFC title game.
This defense will be a work in progress

I expect significant growing pains the first half of the season.

The offense better get out of the gate quickly or it could be a long season. A lot will depend on if we can get our O-line in order without Beatty.
Patience

Everybody wanted Spags so now you got him. Live or die with him. I think it will be interesting but we will have some bad Sunday nights on this site especially early. Maybe they get hot late like '07.

Think it largely depends on the condition JPP is going to be in and how acclimated the new Safeties are (most likely Collins + ?).
except for one maybe two years with the Giants spags has a very

checkered history in the mfl. lots of reasons he is a BBI favorite, little of it objective on field performance.

there's very little magic left in the world
I believe the fact that the Giants will have live practice vs Cinn.

Should improve the learning curve.

Granted, everyone might get injured with our luck.
Give me Prince, DRC, JPP, Hankins, Ellis, Thomas,

and above all Beason in perfect health, and 2 safeties who have something figured out vis a vis the scheme, and I'll take my chances with Spags vs Fewell as DC.
As far as the defense goes,

with what we will be able to put out on the field, I think we have a much better chance with Spags, than with Fewell...no more of this square peg in a round hole, scenario....

Spags has taken a lot of criticism for what he did with the Rams and Saints.....this stint with the Giants, will answer if he was in the wrong place at the wrong time...

Not many have expressed this, but Spags is under a lot of pressure....this is his football career on the line.....If he fails here, he will be looked upon as another one year wonder, and may never get another chance again....he has four great starters....the rest are questionable, have medical history problems, or lack experience....saying he had no safeties with with experience the first time means nothing, compared to now....he had defensive leadership in several players in 2007.....at this moment, he has none...until someone steps up, and puts his money where his mouth is(Rolle had a big mouth but couldn't back it up), and can lead this defense, Spags will be experimenting week after week....will the guys buy into his system, after the inevitable early season mistakes? How long will it take , for this defensive to team, which hasn't been together long as a unit, to "get it"?

The first half of preseason games, when that first unit is in there, will answer some questions but not all....I said this before.....while the team has improved, personnel wise, it has more question marks than last season's team had.....just have to hope we are playing meaningful games in December, and not dumbing down for a draft pick.....

Basically offense needs to carry the defense...

For the first half of the season, score 25+ a game
i really

hate all you "fans" that just doubt all the time. you have a loser attitude. you expect a "brutal" 1/2 of the season. fuck out of here.
Hopefully, the continuity on offense will be enough to carry them
JonC : 6/28/2015 4:37 pm : link
if the defense is behind early on.

Perhaps even bigger is the fact that NYG has not looked ready for the regular season until Week 3 since the new CBA was installed.
New DC, new scheme, some new starters, some new backups.
Klaatu : 6/28/2015 6:47 pm : link
You have to expect some growing pains. Still, the biggest concern is health. The talent is there.
Yep health

will go a long way again in determining how this defense performs. If Beason can stay on the field, I think he's just as good as 2005 Pierce. As BBB said, Pierce was slow by 2007.

Solid corners, best than most teams. Good tackles & ends. A better starting LB than we usually have. I can see the defense doing very well if they can cut down on the damn injuries.

As far as Spags vs. Fewell, I think defensive players like to play attack rather than read & react. If most survive the season, the defense could do very well.
the big thing that will slow this defense down is
Jersey55 : 6/29/2015 10:20 am : link
the CBA rules on contact practicing which will limit players from going full tilt in practice .

I disagree in that I think our DL has depth and will be stronger against the run than last year. Assuming we stay healthy I look for Beason to also bring stability and smarts to MLB. The key is for us to stay healthy; for our top 3 corners to stay healthy; and for our safeties to develop as the season goes.

The Giants are going to have to out score their opponents early in the season as I suspect breakdowns on defense the first third of the season due to the new system and youth at safety.
