can always trade him after the draft or in season. And if not we have a great backup. Maybe we have an offer for a 2016 #1 (TSN did report we had an offer of a #1).
Im not going to cry in my soup over missed #2s.
It's possible we're focusing on a roster player rather than a pick.
but I have to think that (1) the Isles are in win now mode, and (2) they had to have been prepared to give him more time to develop given his profile. That makes me think they really soured on him.
If I were the Rangers I'd keep him unless he returns a 1st

It sounds that way from some "insider" rumors. There was a rumor he'd even requested a trade last year. This was pretty good value and the truth is they had him and 2 other high picks in the AHL last year and the other 2 just outplayed him.
How would moving a high draft pick who hadn't yielded the development the team had hoped (and we should all note that defensemen take longer to develop) in exchange for two picks that are at best still some time away equate to win-now mode? Dal Colle is still another season away and Ho-Sang is 2-3 seasons away.
That said, most reports have Pulock in the 5-6 D slot this season, Hickey will be resigned shortly, and Mayfield showed the toughness in his limited run (coupled with real development in his skills over the past 2 years) that the Isles expected of Reinhart. I really like the moves here by Garth, and I do hope that Reinhart has a good career. To recoup a first rounder (higher than our pick traded to BUF, #21) and a second rounder given the Isles' defensive prospect pipeling bearing fruit, Snow did well.
This center, Barzal, with the skill/playmaking capabilities the draft crew are talking about (let's slow down on Button's "Datsyuk-like" comment, but I'd be thrilled if it happened) is our future replacement for Nielsen if we move him sometime or if his time in NY eventually runs out. Also tells me that Ryan Strome, originally a C, will be kept at wing, where I couldn't be more thrilled should he ride shotgun with JT for a very long time.

Win-now as opposed to tear down rebuild. Win-now in the sense that they should have an expectation of competing for the division title again.
Isles are in a sweet spot where they have a ton of good underpriced talent (because of pre-UFA years and JT's very favorable contract). I'd normally think that a team in their position would be using a now-ready former top 5 pick to acquire a vet like Pat Sharp, rather than go back to the drawing board on that asset (with a mid #1 and a #2).
that's a head scratcher to me.Holtby is fine/good. Goalie prospects are hard to recover value on because they take a while to develop and usually teams want to see NHL reps before trading for one. So it's not just a matter of taking the best player and having an "asset".
he was underwhelming and seemed to have a chip on his shoulder. For whatever reason he did not look like he wanted to be here. The return was more than I expected.
Brian Strait here, we've got Brian Strait here... anyone? We'll take on his salary, you take the player. Brian Strait here! Brian Strait here...

Gotcha. Makes sense. I don't know that the Isles are done with moves yet (Grabner for one) and that they may try to see what shakes out next week with FA. I also feel pretty strongly that much of went on with the Okposo public availability discussion was a motivator to cement him as the top-6 forward some feel we needed. Of course, health will have a lot to say about it, but Kyle is a prideful man and I think he comes out guns blazing this year.

When we see the mega extension he's about to sign we'll understand it better. I suspect he's getting north of $6 million per year. I also suspect that the Flames threatened to offer sheet him (maybe thru the agent).
That's been making the rounds for a while. If that's as a replacement for Okposo, no thanks. A year older and with less career production. That's a step back, if looked at as a replacement.

I have to admit the Flames' D is gonna be pretty stacked.
Amazing trade! How many players in the nhl would fetch a mid 1st and early 2nd? Not many. Great steal Garth!
You're overrating the value these picks IMO. A few years ago #18 netted #20 and a mid 2. So I'd conservatively guess that the two picks EDM gave up couldnt have gotten them any higher that #12-13 in this draft. I'd guess hundreds of players/properties could get you that return. The Rangers have probably 7-8 forwards I wouldnt trade for #16 and a #2.
Love you cocksuckers stroking each other all week long over Talbot, glass and any other shit you could muster up. And nothing goes your way and total silence.
A young top-pairing D got 15, 45 and 52 for Boston. Reinhart, whose development has stagnated, got 16 and 33. I'd say Islanders did well. Not to mention they have Pulock, Mayfield and Pelech in AHL even after moving Griffin
It's possible a 1st rd pick was on the table and that Sather is instead trying to center the return around a roster player. Who knows. It's clear there were a few offers.. we just don't know exactly what or from whom.
You only did good if you take the position that Reinhart was not worth his draft position. In no league do you trade a #4 overall pick for a #16 and a 2nd rounder. Add in the fact that the Isles plowed in the development time on Reinhart whereas they have to wait all over again on these two new picks.
So if Reinhart is not a semi-bust, it's a terrible trade. I dont value guys based on draft position post-draft, so I wont say it's a bad trade. I have no idea whether this is good value for Reinhart circa June 2015.
Obviously we would love for these two picks to become
Datsyuk and Charbonneau. That is about player development and some luck. We will see how that plays out in the future.
But for the present, the Isles have picked 4 first rounders in the last two years. They are keeping a nice stable of young centers in their system so they can make a move for a player to help immediately.
I also believe think they will make a FA move as well.
#28 from Tampa was originally the rangers pick. And we select guy carboneau 2.0
1983
And since 1941 the Islanders have won 4x the cups as the Rangers despite the Rangers having years pre-expansion and the Islanders not arriving until 1972
But what I really can't wait for are some posts about how the isles are building something special! And the players know it! And they want to be here! And the balance of power in NY hockey has shifted!
that the islanders can essentially get two 1st round picks in a deep draft for a prospect that they were really down on. Glad that Snow has the humility to admit a mistake and maximize value.
Im not going to cry in my soup over missed #2s.
Please be true

What makes you think Talbot is worth a first round pick. 28 years old only 53 starts. He had a good run on a good team.
Well, Lehner was with a much shittier track record. He's younger but that's it.
And he had a concussion

And Barzal is better than any of the three Boston drafted.
