That's over. The window slammed shut. Chara is breaking down. The Hamilton trade was an abortion. They should just burn it down now and start over.

I think that is exactly what they are doing.
When I read Rask
pjcas18 : 6/27/2015 11:47 am : link
was on the block I assumed it was because of the goalie they got from LA, Martin Jones. He's a big goalie (bigger than Subban)

Subban isn't ready.

He came up last year, I thought as a showcase, and I'm sure some of it was nerves, but he was brutal.

I think they could have won a cup with Rask, but agree, at this point, might as well deal him if they have his replacement in either Jones or Subban.
Chara
pjcas18 : 6/27/2015 11:50 am : link
is 38 years old, they shouldn't be surprised.

what they should have done was dealt Chara to the Islanders, not Boychuck. No idea if the Islanders would have agreed to it, possibly, but Chara had been showing obvious signs of regression since the second half of 2014

Hagelin Stinks - ( New Window )
I agree, I think really highly of Rask,
BrettNYG10 : 6/27/2015 11:51 am : link
But they're approaching a Devils situation with nothing but a great goalie, so it totally makes sense to dump him.

Jay on the Island : 6/27/2015 11:51 am : link
Yes Subban isn't ready yet but Jones could hold down the fort for a year or two until he is. Boston isn't a playoff team now after all these moves so they should just deal Rask while they could get a huge payday for him or wait until next offseason when teams need a #1 goalie since most spots have been filled already.

I have debated on whether or not the Devils should try to move Schneider. They could get a big package in return for him after coming off a fantastic season and being locked up long term. IMO it isn't worth it as I think they will be able to compete in the 2016-17 season especially if Zacha is ready.
Brett why would you link that?
Torrag : 6/27/2015 11:55 am : link
An attempt to manage your sellers remorse?
sorry forgot to add
Jay on the Island : 6/27/2015 11:57 am : link
The Devils really don't have many goaltending prospects with potential to be a legitimate #1. Scott Wedgewood has potential but he is still pretty raw and is at least a year away from playing in the NHL. They did just draft arguably the drafts top goaltender in 18 year old Mackenzie Blackwood with the 42 overall pick. He obviously will take several years to develop but he has a big upside and is 6' 4"

Yes.
fair enough

Hags will be missed.
Hags is a nice player
MookGiants : 6/27/2015 12:01 pm : link
but he's the type of guy a good organization is smart to replace rather than tie up decent money in when they are in a cap crunch. 3rd liner even with what he brings should be something we can replace. I kind of like that trade
.....
BrettNYG10 : 6/27/2015 12:02 pm : link
I read the Rangers wanted Etem when there were talks of Girardi to the Ducks.

Apparently Etem was a top three prospect for awhile but hasn't put it all together. He scored three goals in twelve games this post season. Maybe not as bad of a deal as it seems at first blush, the Rangers have done well with guys who had disappointing draft statuses (Brassard, Pouliot, for example).

Habs was a great third liner, though. Like I've said before, easy to criticize because his flaws are so obvious (unlike shitty positional players, who often escape criticism despite harming the team more), but he was a very good player.
Hags*
BrettNYG10 : 6/27/2015 12:03 pm : link
The trades growing on me. Hated it at first blush. I think Mook is right.
Mook you're in the minority
Torrag : 6/27/2015 12:03 pm : link
Nothing wrong with that though. I've been really regretting that Girardi deal. I didn't like it then. I like it a lot less now and it keeps getting worse.

BrettNYG10 : 6/27/2015 12:05 pm : link
Girardi is one of those guys who gets overrated because he blocks shots, etc. He doesn't suppress shots. He is responsible in his own zone, but is often a huge reason why the team is stuck in its own zone.

Hated that deal from day one,
Have to move a defenseman's

Kreider and Hayes need contracts in 2017.

yeah
MookGiants : 6/27/2015 12:08 pm : link
no defending the Girardi deal.
Not exactly a smooth skater like Hags
Giants2012 : 6/27/2015 12:10 pm : link
yet better hands and lower compensation is better.
Etem is cheap and still young enough to have upside
Torrag : 6/27/2015 12:10 pm : link
So he has a chance to blossom.
Some early trade grades, Isles and Rangers mentioned

From Custance:
Hagelin to Anaheim -
Quote:
The trade

New York Rangers get: Emerson Etem, 2015 second-round pick (No. 41 – Ryan Gropp)

Anaheim Ducks get: Carl Hagelin, 2015 second-round pick (No. 59), and pick No. 179 in 2015 draft

Anaheim Ducks: B+

Anaheim moved some money out in the trade that sent James Wisniewski to the Hurricanes and that gives them flexibility to sign Hagelin, who is a restricted free agent. He’s going to get a nice raise from the $2.4 million he earned last year, one of the reasons he became expendable in New York although according to an NHL source, talks between the Rangers camp and Hagelin were very minimal before this deal.

This trade is speed for speed, as both players are great skaters.

“I think Hagelin is flat out quick from stop to go,” said Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau when we chatted after the trade. “Emerson is more of a powerful skater.”

Hagelin can absolutely fly and is a more consistent player than Etem who had trouble staying in the Anaheim lineup. Hagelin is coming off his second consecutive 17-goal season, although the goal-scoring dried up during the postseason when he had just two goals.

Despite their success the Rangers weren’t necessarily a great possession team, but Hagelin was on the right side more often than not, with the Rangers controlling 50.4 percent of the even strength shot attempts when he was on the ice.

New York Rangers: B

This trade helped the Rangers move up higher and grab Gropp, who has size and is a good skater, with a pretty complete two-way game.

The wildcard will be if the Rangers can get more consistency out of Etem than the Ducks were able to because he has the skill to be a better pro than we’ve seen so far in the NHL. He struggled to earn the regular trust of Bruce Boudreau.

“He’s got great upside,” Boudreau said. “He’s still a young guy. He’s got to be consistent. Consistency is the magic word.”

Etem has had his moments. There were times during the first-round of the 2013 playoffs against Detroit where his play jumped off the ice. He had three goals in that seven-game series and five points. He followed it up with a seven-goal regular season.

He’s never quite had that breakout year that he shows flashes of having, although his possession numbers are promising (53.1 percent Corsi For last season).

“Etem's skating is truly elite and at the top of his game he can be a very dangerous skilled forward,” said ESPN Insider prospect analyst Corey Pronman. “He's struggled in the pro game with pace and playing off the puck in terms of his positioning and physical game. The former first-round pick has a lot of potential but his development has been up and down over the last few years.”

Reinhart to EDM -
Quote:
The trade

Edmonton Oilers get: Griffin Reinhart

New York Islanders get: No. 16 overall pick (Mathew Barzal) and No. 33 pick in 2015 NHL draft

New York Islanders: A –

It’s hard to give the same group that picked Reinhart perhaps too high with the No. 4 overall pick in 2012 too much credit for trading him later for a mid-first-round pick and a second-round pick, but landing Barzal in that spot makes this a great trade for general manager Garth Snow. Barzal slipped past the Bruins' trio of first-rounders and immediately becomes a better prospect than Reinhart.

Snow gets high marks for starting this draft without a single first-round pick and leaving with a pair of them thanks to Snow’s aggressive work. This is a draft scouts loved, and Snow managed to get back into the mix.

Barzal, selected with the No. 16 pick, was the No. 11 overall ranked skater by NHL Central Scouting.

Edmonton Oilers: B

The Oilers entered this season needing help on defense and get a player in Reinhart who is in the same age range as their young core but a little more developed than a defenseman they would have landed in this draft.

“Griffin is a known commodity to the Oilers staff, playing there and coming up through the Oil Kings,” said Oilers coach Todd McLellan when we chatted after the trade. “He was a proven winner at that point. Size, puck-moving ability and still fairly inexperienced. The ceiling for his maturity is quite high. We’re anxious to have him come in and develop. He fits our team’s age as we develop and grow. We’re excited to have him.”

Edmonton paid a steep price considering the Calgary Flames landed a proven top pair defenseman in Dougie Hamilton for a package that wasn’t all that far off than the price for Reinhart. That said, GM Peter Chiarelli made a push for Hamilton and it wasn’t from a lack of trying. The Bruins certainly weren’t going to do him any favors.

Reinhart might not have the ceiling we thought when he went No. 4 overall, but ESPN Insider prospect analyst Corey Pronman still likes him as a future NHL regular: “Griffin Reinhart should not have been a fourth overall pick, but he is a great prospect who looked very good in the AHL this season. He's a big D who moves well for a player his size, has elite hockey IQ and can move a puck. He's just not a top-end offensive talent and never has been. He remains a top-30 to -45 prospect outside the NHL though and is a huge boost to the Oilers system.”
We needed to replenish the pipe.
arcarsenal : 6/27/2015 12:16 pm : link
Yeah it's a little disappointing after all the rumors of the potential 1st rders, Yakupov, Hertl, etc.. but at some point we needed to do a little restocking. Looks like they identified that this was an opportunity to compile picks and infuse some more young talent. Never exciting as a fan but it's necessary.
The Isles are
CromartiesKid21 : 6/27/2015 12:20 pm : link
sniping guys in the later rounds that were predicted to go very early to mid second round.
4th rdr Wortherspoon was ranked to go in the low 40's, 3rd rdr Van de Sompel was ranked low 30's.
Lookout the Brooklynders are sniping

Suck it Fish.
I'm very glad the Rangers did not get Yak
hudson : 6/27/2015 12:32 pm : link
He's Zherdov 2.0.
I wish they got Eberele though.
Zherdev was a 60 pt player here.
arcarsenal : 6/27/2015 12:45 pm : link
I'd gladly have taken that. I just don't think it was ever on the table and I doubt Eberle was ever even discussed. No chance Talbot nets you Eberle.
Horrific return for Hagelin
Deej : 6/27/2015 2:03 pm : link
I can only imagine that we fell in love with the kid we got at #41. Unfathomable that they traded him just to move up in the 2nd round.

I'm generally happy with what we've done taking our shot at a cup recently, and I get our cap crunch. But really, wait until FA starts and then move Hags to a team that struck out.
Soderberg
pjcas18 : 6/27/2015 5:03 pm : link
for a 6th? I know he would have been an RFA, but that's a great deal for CO, wish the Habs could have pulled that off.

He's a top 6 forward, worst case top 9 IMO and can play both specials.

Also think the Avs extended him to a very fair deal. And he hasn't lived up to the hype, but still think he's worthy of that contract, and should have gotten a better return in a trade.
Boston is in a downward death spiral
Torrag : 6/27/2015 5:53 pm : link
Bad decisions and deals left and right. Confusion to the Murgos!
Soderberg was a pending UFA
Deej : 6/27/2015 8:17 pm : link
not RFA. Hence the low return. Negotiating rights trade.
