and then he fumbles. Almost feel bad for Roger...almost. And don't forget the job by Hostetler to get into FG range. Bahr was reliable but didn't have a big leg. That FG was just inside the left upright. A few yards further out and probably it's a miss.
I've always loved how Summerall and Madden set the scene
"It makes the Coach think about it too!"
"It's a lonely world..."
"Journeyman kicker, thirteen years in the league..."
And of course,
"He also wrote one time, I'm not just a kicker, I'm a player."
And then after, Summerall took two beats before uttering those words we will always remember.
Football games often end in a rush and a jumble and the broadcast team usually fails at emphasizing and articulating the gravity of the moment. Summerall and Madden showed them all how it should be done.

It helped you had Summerall, a former kicker, and Madden, a HOF coach and former player. Now and days you get Joe Buck (Who admittedly hates football) and Al Michaels. Michaels used to be good, but he's not a former player and is in his decline. Madden and Summerall were a rare pair that were able to excel at the game and the booth.
That was a brutally physical contest. It was the hardest hitting game I've ever seen. The thumps and thwacks were audible through the television. They could have pasted those bubbles on the screen like the old Adam West Batman series. BAM!!!/CRASH!!!/THUNK!!!
We moved the ball decently but couldn't get it in the end zone. We passed on two easy field goals in favor of two fourth down conversion attempts and failed on both. If we had kicked the field goals we'd have won the game. That set the stage for Matt Barr to kick five field goals to win the NFCCG. Bill wasn't going to leave points on the field again imo.
The game ended with Phil and Lott going at it hard and having to be separated. Yup a QB dancing with one of the toughest SOB's in the game.
After that game all I wanted, prayed for, was another shot at them.
The Niners came with a FG block that the Giants hadn't seen before on
that last play. Dexter Carter almost got there, but it was recognized and Bahr made the correct adjustment and kicked it to the left instead of down the middle, in which case it would have most likely been blocked. That's why the kick was close to the left---it had to be.
Greatest game I've ever seen.
The Giants had more signature palys in the fourth quarter
of this game (Reasons fake punt, Hostetler pass to Bavaro, Marshall sack on Montana, Howard forced fumble, Bahr's 5th field goal) than they would have over the next 15 years combined.
I rewatched the DVD on Father's Day last week, it never gets old.
Just as big as the Tyree and Manningham grabs IMO. May have been tougher for a NT to force a fumble with his helmet with his body tied up.
In a sense it was bigger..No Howard play, we lose..No Tyree or Manningham catch, we still had a chance (perhaps remote) to win had they not made those spectacular grabs
Being in Vermont on a ski trip. I was staying in a condo on the mountain. As soon as the kick went through I ran outside. When I got out there, some other random guy ran out of his condo at the same time. We were jumping around in the snow together. Awesome day.

You know, I've never seen that. Good call.
Love the way Howard was being tackled by a 49er o-lineman
the first football game I can remember watching. I was 6 years old.
Same here. I was 8 at the time. My dad recorded every Giant game from '88-'91 and this was my go to game when I'd be up early on Saturday mornings. I still re-watch 2-3 times during the season, mostly before a big game as a pick me up.
Damn that was a quick reaction for Taylor to catch that fumble in the
I was living in the top half of a two-family house in Astoria, Queens. I was expecting a couple of friends to come by to watch the game, but I didn't expect them until later on that afternoon. My girlfriend had gone shopping right after breakfast.
Around 11:00 or so I was coming out of the shower when I heard the doorbell ring. It was way too early for my buddies, so I threw a robe on and looked out the window. There were three guys standing on the front porch. Late twenties, early thirties I guessed...white, clean cut, dressed casually. I asked them what they wanted.
"Immigration," said one of them.
"Immigration?" I asked. "Are you sure you've got the right apartment?"
He said they did and requested that I come down. I told him I'd be down in a minute...I had to put some clothes on.
I threw on a pair of jeans and a t-shirt and went downstairs to find them talking to my landlady. I asked to see some ID, but, honestly, the badges and ID cards they showed me could have been fake for all I knew. Still, I had to ask. They asked me for some ID, too, and I showed them my Drivers License.
Anyway...it turned out that the guy who lived in my apartment before me was in the country on a student visa that had expired. The Feds were trying to track him down and this was his last known address. Obviously, I was not that guy. Unfortunately for them, my landlady did not have a forwarding address.
If you recall what was happening in the world at the time, it was a little unnerving, but we ended up talking about the game for a few minutes before they left.
BB56 had it right. No Howard play = No Title. HUGE!

of Giants' lore, how big was Erik Howard's play?

Giants likely lose without Howard. That would have been a killer if we saw the 49ers take a knee to win it.

If that happened, I would have had nightmares over the Carthon drop

We all would. First series i believe and it was right in his hands.

On the other hand, you had to admire them for how quick they were off the ball, and how precise their execution was - leg whips and all.

We have seen some debacles and bad football but it there isn't much better than a Giants' playoff run.
great season by Howard that year.
