NFT: Android totally freaked out - unusable.

BlueLou : 6/28/2015 1:24 am
I think I was using the latest 4.3.xx update, but now the phone does not respond (or responds erratically) to any touch screen action I perform, and initiates all types of opening and closing of windows and apps on its own, without provocation. Occasionally the error message "System UI Not Working', or something like that, is displayed.

What to do?

TIA

Turn it off?

Reboot.
factory

reset
In factory reset now... sigh, wil lose some photos I didn't back up.
BlueLou : 6/28/2015 1:56 am : link
Unless I have google automatically backing them up.

Any suggestions for future automatic backup options for photos?

TIA

PS a simple reboot did nothing at all to help. Had to do a hard factory reset as I had no stable access to the "settings" menu...
Touch screen failure?

Hook the phone up to your computer and try downloading your files from the phone.

I would guess you have a hardware issue and not a software issue. How old is your phone?
4.3 isn't the latest update

You're behind in the times my man. The latest is 5.1xx Lolipop.

After the reset try to push a software update.
No indeed I have 5.1xx lollipop, my bad.

And the problems now seem to be a hardware issue with the touchscreen itself... Phone is still jumping around as If I have touched the hardscreen.

The phone is 2 years old...

2 years and 2-3 months old.

Any point trying to fix it if it's hardware?
Not 2 years yet. 1 year and 3 months, actually.

not that old, eh?
After 2x factory reset

Still problems. Will describe later... Weird stuff!
You could probably have it fixed
AnnapolisMike : 6/28/2015 6:56 am : link
But you may be better off with a new phone.
If it's just not responding to touch
Wuphat : 6/28/2015 8:37 am : link
you could try hooking up an OTG cable and a mouse which could let you turn on usb debugging so you can download all your info to a computer.
Did you recently update? Did you previously use a custom rom?

Is the phone warmer than usual? What are your rendering settings if Developer option is on?

Need more details. Depending on the situation it could range from cache issues to hardware issues.
Mason and others who really understand this shit...

there's some (what I would call) very weird symptoms of it's malaise. Many of which show up in discussion of Nexus 5 failures on the google chat forum for discussion of google phone errors.

The dialog box - "Unfortunately system UI has stopped [working, IIRC]" pops up about daily, or more.

There were, at it's worst, tons of random ghost touches acting out on the phone, almost non-stop. Following 2x restoring to factory settings, followed by loading somewhat less software applications on the phone, has gotten rid of the non-stop random ghost touch scenarios.

Mason, yest at its worst the phone was a bit hot, largely because the battery was not charging properly despite being plugged in. It can recharge only with one of the several recharging cable set ups I have, not with the one that originally came with the phone, either. But I don't think heat was the issue, really.

The weirdest symptom that remains constant is different touchscreen reactions when the phone is held in portrait vs landscape position and view. Set on "autorotate", when I shrink down all windows to stacked tabs in the protrait view, I cannot close the tabs at all. There is no response to clicking on the upper right corner x for close tab. But when I rotate the phone to the landscape view position (and the screen rotates with it), the x "close tab" works fine, for all tabs except the last open window, which still won't close...

Likewise, the keyboard response when typing is far better and more reliable when the phone is in landscape view. When in portrait view, either the keyboard is totally unresponsive to touches, or after typing a few words/letters freezes up and "bricks". This happens all the time, and seems to happen even faster if I try to type a key in the lower corners of the screen, left or right.

On the flip side some of the actions I ask the apps to make when open respond better when the phone is in portrait view, rather than landscape!

And it's not random, the different responses in landscape vs portrait are repeatable.

Makes me think it's software no? There is something going on with a new app - function google added vis a vis tabs and apps function.

graphics processor rendering options. Are you accelerating it? It puts a strain on the GPU which could overwork it. You will start getting GUI error messages and apps could constantly start to crash when you try to open them up.
Just had a minute to read your other post fully BlueLou

It sounds like your digitizer may be in it's last days too. If it is leaving after ghost prints (after images) around where your finger tips were. When you get a chance turn off your phone and check for hairline cracks and yes overheating is BIG issue with GPU and the general motherboard as well as digitizers.

If you haven't done so already check your CPU temp (there are apps available like CPU temp, Clean Master). You want to keep it 89 F. It is sticking around over 100 F (120-130 very bad) even after closing apps and cooling down it is highly probable that you have a hardware failure going on.
Thanks Mason.

No ghost prints after screen touches, just the bizarre alternate reactions, consistently, to touches on the "same" part of the image on a screen when in either portrait or landscape view...
