NFT: So what are your plans for this Independence Day weekend?

RC02XX : 6/29/2015 11:10 am
My wife and I have been trying to figure out what to do this Independence Day weekend now that we have an addition tike to think about in our planning.

If the weather permits, we're planning on going to my alma mater for fireworks (it does an incredible show every year), but because driving onto the campus is restricted for most people, we'll most likely go early in the evening, park about a mile away, and slowly make our way to the field where we'll let the kiddos play in the grass and make a picnic out of the evening.

Anyone doing anything similar or something crazy?

And this is a prime time to be surrounded by fat sweaty people riding those scooters around Disney. I bet Brett wants to visit Disney now.

in a few years where I don't have anything planned. My office gave us the choice of having either Friday or Monday off and I chose Monday because Friday is going to be dead. I looked at the calendar and it looks like only 5 of us will be around on Friday so hopefully we can cut out early.

If the weather permits I might just spend it at the beach. If not I can always binge watch something.

Won't be home till the 12th but I will check in. Hitting all the parks over the course of the week. Going that week cause of the extra day with holiday and we are using my aunt's timeshare that is right next to Disney.
We have been warned about how crowded it will be. I will be sure not to wear flip flops so my toes don't get crushed.

I'd make good use of the pool(s) ;). The first time I ever went was in July and swore I'd never return. Of course I did, but we now go at a slower time of year.

We did the whole fireworks in our cul-de-sac deal last year after spending the morning at our city's parade and the afternoon at our community pool (which was mostly empty, thankfully). I'm all about letting my four year old run around with sparklers, but my wife isn't having it. Even when I suggested we use the whole Solo cup trick to protect her hand, I got vetoed.
I'm glad they changed the fireworks law.

I never liked those conversations with law enforcement. I still made a run to TN to take advantage of deals. Next year, I will have to figure out something else to do on Mother's Day.

We just did Sesame Place at the beginning of June. If you haven't signed up for it, I highly recommend the meals with Elmo deal. While it's expensive for mediocre food (at best), the fact that your kid(s) will get more time with the characters will totally be worth it. With that being said, since school is out and this being a holiday weekend, I'm assuming that the place will be packed, which may make the meal deal not as fun.

When we went, I think the park was maybe at 30% capacity. Not only did my daughter get to spend a ton of time with the characters, but we also got to ride many of the ride multiple times (even the water park rides) with almost no wait. Speaking of the water park, many people I saw wore their swim suits to the park so that they could jump back and forth between the water park and the ride park. We were staying at the Sheraton a few minutes away, so we just did the ride park in the morning and the water park during the afternoon after grabbing lunch back at the hotel. Worked like a charm.

Good luck and enjoy the park!

We're going with the 60mm Mortar this year instead of the 120mm. That baby provides a very satisfactory sound/display and flash-cooks any meat that near it when it hits. The 120mm just tends to vaporize stuff.

It's my favorite holiday of the year
LAGiant : 6/29/2015 4:20 pm : link
My neighborhood is just the bomb (pun intended) on the 4th of July. Costa Mesa allows and sells legal fireworks which are good but they only go so high and so loud. Now every year they say that they're "cracking down" on the illegal stuff but it never stops the entire city from going completely ape-shit. From 8:30 until past midnight it's just a war zone. The air is so thick with smoke that it's sometimes hard to see. I love it!

The other thing I love most about the 4th is the community feel of the holiday. It always starts with a bike parade at 10:00 AM where families decorate their bikes and golf carts and cruise the neighborhood. It's also the one day a year that no matter what side of the political fence you ride, if any, that everyone is proud to be an American! Everyone comes out of their house and we all spend some quality time together as a community. It really is a giant block party. I only wish we had more reasons to actually get out and interact with our local neighbors.

Thanks. I'm off from work thursday so I am hoping that it is a little less crowded than later in the weekend.

With that said, I just hope that we dont loose the count's splash castle to a "code brown" again

quadrupled on the 4th. You will find yourself shoulder to shoulder with people all day. Packed. Then getting out of there will take forever. That was our experience around the 4 th. weekend a few tears back. We swore off that place forever.

But we do a small celebration which this year includes the celebration of the anniversary of our adoption of a rescue shelter bitch. Overall she's been a great family addition, and is a heckuva watchdog who really has some attitude around "strangers" but is very loving and protective of the family.

So she gets a grilled NY steak with us. Maybe some hot dogs, too.

When we went(not on a holiday) I bought the unofficial guide book. Well worth the money. We got on so many rides by timing fast passes the book suggested. Just a thought....

sparklers are practically harmless for a 4-year old. tell the wife to take the bubble wrap off. my kids held roman candles and bottle rockets at that age. ok, that's not true, but they did have sparklers.
