NFT: Yanks talk 6-30

superspynyg : 6/29/2015 1:39 pm
Yanks continue their Jekyll and Hyde ways. They all se 2 of 3 against the awful Phillies (Phillis put up 10 + runs in 2 of the 3). Then they go into Houston and split a series against the a very good Astros team. The lack off consistency drives me nuts.

Good news is that Ellsbury is starting rehab games this week. We need him. My question is does he go back to the lead off sport or has Gardners outstanding hitting lock him in at 1 and Ellsbury in at 2?

I agree that it doesn't really matter that much
Osi Osi Osi OyOyOy : 6/29/2015 2:06 pm : link
But if anything, I think Gardner's power surge (.618 SLG in June) actually improves Ellsbury's odds of being the leadoff hitter when he gets back.

Ellsbury is also the better base-runner which helps his leadoff case a little as well, I think Jacoby/Gardner is the way to go at the top of the order.

George King's report
wigs in nyc : 6/29/2015 2:15 pm : link
during the radio broadcast yesterday also mentioned that Andrew Miller should throw off a mound sometime this week.

Also mentioned that, of the young arms, the Yankees would most like to keep Bryan Mitchell up- the problem here is the attendant restrictions- as he's never been a full time reliever they'd be reluctant to go back to back games with him. This restriction, of course, mitigates somewhat having the extra arm, or at least more than it would to have a traditional reliever stick with the big club.

That and they have a paucity of legit starting options at the AAA level. Unless you're going to bring Kyle Davies up or you're ready to bite the bullet with Severino, Mitchell is the only starter down there you'd be comfortable sticking in a game with the expectation that you might actually have a chance.

Shreve has wonderful numbers in his short career, even though LHHs are hitting better against him than RHHs. He's a guy you can let pitch a full inning and not turn into a LOOGY.

Sabathia
looie : 6/29/2015 5:41 pm : link
They will not send a guy with a $22M/yr. contract to the pen. Plus he's their only lefty starter. They're just gonna have to grin and bear it with him and his 5+ ERA this season.

On the plus side, the HRs are back this year, which is great. And they're getting them from up and down the lineup. They will end up with at least 8 guys in double figures in HRs this year with an outside shot at 9 or 10 guys (Gregorius? Jones?)

Once they move Warren to the pen and get Miller back, the back end of their pen will be the best in MLB (Warren, Shreve, Betances, Miller).

Will they find a mysterious ailment for his troubles though, placing him on the DL and/or possibly creating an insurance claim for his salary? I suspect an outcome like this should his struggles continue.

True but the tough decision is do you go with a 6 man rotation to lessen the number of Starr's he has to make.

Headley stinks. Everyone kills Didi and Drew but this guy continues to get a pass, he can't hit and can't field horrible signing, and why is McCann off again he was rested twice last week,

Bring Severino up already. What the fuck are they waiting for. Consensus among scouts is he is ready, he's the real deal, and the Yankees need to trust their young players a little more. Some of the Yankees position players say they would love to have him up to see what he can do. He can't do any worse then C.C.

As for C.C. It's sad because he really was good for a long while here with the Yankees but as long as Joe doesn't mind losing every time he pitches now then so be it. Of course the Yanks did run into some great glove work last night which probably kept them from winning. Having said that, every time Sabathia pitches he has no margin for error. Warren has been much more consistent and you know what to expect. Yet he goes to the bullpen.

Then there is Tanaka. Who knows what's up with him. As for Nova will he continue to pitch the way he pitched in his first outing back. Look at the Rays. They bring their young arms up. They don't hesistate. I hope the Yankees take page out of the Rays playbook and throw caution to the wind and get this kid up here as fast as they can.

Dunedin81 : 6/30/2015 8:59 am : link
if the Yankees need a starter. At least for now it looks like Mitchell will stay up in the Yankees pen. As to the "what are they waiting for?" question though the kid has less than 100 innings above A Ball, and he's just 21 years old. There is no rush. His secondary stuff needs polish and he could certainly stand to get it at AAA.

He has had two errors since 5/23, that's a pretty respectable rate. He isn't going to be a top defender but he will likely play acceptable 2B. Pirela isn't a great defender either.
BTW Adam Warren to the pen is just fucking stupid...
Dunedin81 : 6/30/2015 9:37 am : link
he has been their most consistent starter this year. I get that they can't (or won't) do anything about CC this year because of what's left on his deal, but even the guys with legit ace stuff on this team (Tanaka, Pineda) have been inconsistent. Warren goes out every fifth day and gives you a chance to win. Yeah his stuff probably plays up in the pen, but Miller is coming back, Shreve has emerged, Wilson is decent and Mitchell seems like he's staying there. It wasn't a desert back there.
It was inevitable
arniefez : 6/30/2015 11:33 am : link
CC is owed about 60 million and 70 more starts unless they release him and eat his money. Odds of that happening? Tanaka & Pineda aren't going to the pen. Nova is just back from TJ and Evolidi is the only 200 inning guy they have. Doesn't seem like there was any other option.

Agreed. CC wasn't really the issue last night, he gave us length and we should be able to score four runs. But sooner or later they're going to have to bite the bullet. He isn't effective and he's not a guy who should be in the starting rotation for a playoff contender. Eat a ton of money and ship him off to a second tier team and let him tutor some kids.
actually the Rays usually take it slow with young pitchers
Greg from LI : 6/30/2015 11:51 am : link
David Price is pretty much the only guy they rushed to the majors because he was clearly ready. For example, Chris Archer threw 770 minor league innings. Jake Odorizzi, 605. Matt Moore, 523. Jeremy Hellickson, 613. Alex Cobb, 596. Way back when, James Shields threw 554.

Luis Severino has thrown 296 minor league innings to date. Odds are the Rays wouldn't bring him up for two more years.

The Rays starters have had as many issues with arm injuries as any other team. Until MLB figures out what the hell is going on with these kids that has their shoulders and elbows turning into glass, I say you just cross your fingers and monitor closely. If Severino has the stuff to help us win now we bring him up and give him a shot.

He would, but if the alternative is the bullpen or an outright off the roster I'm not sure he'd say no. He might be untradeable, he might not. I'm sure a team with a young staff might have some interest, he's a leader and he can eat innings.
He hasn't had an ERA+ over 85
arniefez : 6/30/2015 8:00 pm : link
since 2012. Last Year it was 74 and this year it's 71. The only thing he can eat is Captain Crunch. If he was released and could be signed for the vet minimum I'm sure some team would give him a shot and then dump him as soon as he he starts pitching to a 71 ERA+. I know CC has been a great representative for the Yankees and done everything they've ever asked but it's over except the 60+ million they owe him. He's one of the very worst pitchers in MLB at this point. If nothing else he no longer should be taking a regular turn. The Yankees are 6-10 in the 16 games he's started so far this year.
