NFT: True Detective and Brink on HBO

Aloha Alan : 6/29/2015 2:09 pm
any one watching, and thoughts?

I personally am having a hard time with True Detective so far, but the end of last night's episode was unexpected.

I like Brink. Jack Black, and Tim Robbins are pretty funny as is Tim Robbins #2 who seems to do everything for the "Secretary." I wonder when she's going to wipe his ass???
Yeah same here with True Detective
giantsfan44ab : 6/29/2015 2:14 pm : link
I'm trying not to hold it to the standard of the 1st season but its hard not to, even knowing its a different cast and director.

It's hard to accept Vaughn in the role he is in. McConnaughey at least had some serious roles before this and certainly outplayed his perception. Vaughn hasn't really done that for me yet.
True Detective is so fucking boring
Ben in Tampa : 6/29/2015 2:15 pm : link
And the actors this season aren't up to it. I thought the second episode of The Brink was pretty funny, so hopefully it'll find its stride.

I know it's not really fair to compare but this summer season of the Sunday block isn't even close to the GoT/Silicon Valley/Veep block lineup.
Haven't seen...
Strip-Sack : 6/29/2015 2:16 pm : link
the 2nd True Detective yet but the first episode was pretty good...better than I expected actually. As for Brink, I couldn't make it through the first episode...maybe I'll give it another try but it was really, really bad with what seemed to be very forced humor.
Still waiting for Vaughn to feel believable.
wigs in nyc : 6/29/2015 2:18 pm : link
Farrell's done an outstanding job, and the car rides between he and McAdams, obviously reminiscent of one element of last year's dynamic- was the first time where the show felt to a familiar level.
i am enjoying True Detective
brandozilla : 6/29/2015 2:18 pm : link
Really excited with where its going after last nights episode.

That said, its not going to top season one.
Season One of True Detective
Aloha Alan : 6/29/2015 2:26 pm : link
set a bar that was quite high. Woody and Matthew were phenomenal in their roles.

Kind of funny to read everyone's take on this. I actually like Vince Vaughn's character for some reason.

Brink was hysterical
I Love Clams Casino : 6/29/2015 2:27 pm : link
good stuff.
I thought season one of True Detective
bceagle05 : 6/29/2015 2:46 pm : link
was incredible for the first five episodes, then struggled a bit at the end. Hopefully this season is the reverse. It's a little shaky thus far, particularly Vaughn. I have no problem seeing him in a dramatic role, but he's just not pulling it off. That story of his to start last night's episode was brutal.

Haven't caught the second episode of Brink, but I will. Definitely has potential.
the cast
pjcas18 : 6/29/2015 3:13 pm : link
premise and timing of Brink has the potential to be legendary.

Not feeling it yet. Tim Robbins is playing a great character.

still a lot of time though

Mr. Robot

Is the biggest surprise for me so far.

Kind of like Hackers meets Donnie Darko.

Great acting and story lines.

True Detective usually takes a while to get going since it's just a mini series.

I expect it will improve with every episode just like last season did.
I think Vaughn has been pretty good.
j_rud : 6/29/2015 3:30 pm : link
Not Oscar-worthy but holding his own. Things got a little shakey towards the end of his little monologue last night ("what if I'm still down there???") but overall he's been pretty good.

Still think, as I have since the cast was announced, that Kitsch will be the weak link. I think being in the military or a veteran is a prerequisite for all of his roles. He plays slight variations of the same guy over and over.

Just hope Farrell isn't dead. He was easily the best on the show. I had a funny feeling after his "I only get a vacation when I croak" line and when he pulled up to Caspers house to hear Bobby Blande's "I Pity the Fool" on the radio I told my wife he was gonna die. The music isn't elected arbitrarily on this show...oh well, I guess we can call that the Game of Thrones Effect. Really hope he isn't though. I'd even settle for a poorly written deux ex machina to get him back. McAdams and Kitsch can't carry this show. Without Farrell the wheels are coming off.

One last thing...did anyone notice the crow mask on the wall in Casper's psychiatrists office? Very similar to if not identical to the one being worn by Casper's chauffeur/Velcoro's shooter...

wigs in nyc : 6/29/2015 3:39 pm : link
was played by freakin Rick Springfield.
I just feel like I've seen True Detective's characters
bceagle05 : 6/29/2015 3:45 pm : link
a million times before. The hot-tempered cop with family issues, the gangster trying to go legit, the troubled war vet, etc. McAdams' character is familiar, too, but she seems the most original of the four. It's setting up as very formulaic in terms of characters and plot, but perhaps there are some twists and turns along the way. Not buying last night's "cliffhanger" either - this isn't Game of Thrones.

j_rud : 6/29/2015 3:58 pm : link
The more I think about it the more I think he can't be dead. Show can't afford to lose him, he's carrying the load. Leaves the question of how he survives both barrels, one each to the stomach and chest. And it's gotta be good, fans are already being pretty harsh on it, imo. He didn't look to be wearing a vest. Rock salt ala Kill Bill? Even rock salt at that range could kill you.
Agreed, it'll be tough to pull this one off.
bceagle05 : 6/29/2015 4:03 pm : link
These aren't some crackerjack killers, either - their last victim had his eyes burned out with acid and his junk shot off.
Yeah its gonna take some convincing
giantsfan44ab : 6/29/2015 4:08 pm : link
to believe he is still alive. A bulletproof vest won't be enough to convince me.
he's dead
bc4life : 6/29/2015 4:18 pm : link
the guy stood over him and fired a second time.

The Vaughn monologue was a bit odd but overall not too bad so far.

FWIW IMDB says Farrell is in all 8 episodes
NYG07 : 6/29/2015 4:40 pm : link
I thought that maybe they were just trying to throw people off but IMDB says Terrence Howard is in 8 episodes of Wayward Pines and even though he was killed in episode 3 he has already appeared in other episodes in flashbacks. It would be hard to imagine his character surviving a point blank shot to the chest with a shotgun but just figured I would throw it out there.
Farrell
pjcas18 : 6/29/2015 5:30 pm : link
worse a bullet proof vest in other scenes.

if it was a head shot you'd know for sure, but no idea if he had a vest or not.

I just know he worse one in other scenes.

He is not dead
montanagiant : 6/29/2015 5:32 pm : link
Haha well that settles it.
bceagle05 : 6/29/2015 5:43 pm : link
Gonna be a hard sell, that's for sure.
happy to watch more Farrell
wigs in nyc : 6/29/2015 5:44 pm : link
but I thought the show'd be above stunts like that.
Yeah, that's pretty definitive haha
j_rud : 6/29/2015 5:50 pm : link
Should be fun to see how they sell this.
I'm willing to suspend belief a bit
Kyle in NY : 6/29/2015 6:05 pm : link
Because Farrell has far and away been the best part of the show so far.
I'm not at all a fan of this season.
Mr. Bungle : 6/29/2015 6:13 pm : link
Next Sunday's episode is my make-or-break. I don't like the storyline at all, the actors aren't doing it for me, and at times, it looks more like a crime show meant for CBS than HBO.
He's alive.
Bill L : 6/29/2015 6:36 pm : link
Right before he died, he warged into a nearby parakeet. Fix the body and the spirit will re-enter.
Or maybe he will be reborn as SoCal

won't be too thrilled he scoped the place out without her.
its been horrible
tikimvp : 6/29/2015 10:47 pm : link
boring, impossible to follow, terribly written and now venturing into ridiculous that he survives
So far, this season has been underwhelming
David in LA : 6/29/2015 11:36 pm : link
Rustin Cohle and Marty Hart had immediate rapport on camera. Both owned the scenes and allowed engaging characters to show through. The acting has been kind of tight this season. There's a pulse of life there with Farrell and McAdams' car ride. It's early, but I think it was a mistake opening up with anything other than the grisly crime scene.

I will watch but it feels
Headhunter : 6/30/2015 7:52 am : link
like a generic cop drama I've seen before many times and I'm ok with that, nothing wrong with it. I expect that we will be having the same disappointment in Fargo season II.
some realism issues

What would be the result of an investigative journalist being savagely beaten by a hooded figure? He just stops writing the story and that's the end of it?

Yeah was totally confused. And Vaughn is 6'5" and easily identifiable, don't know if he thought he was disguised or...
Or was he blind after they sprayed his eyes?

Either way he was look up straight at Vaughn.

Huh? Farrell's character beat him up.

Yeah, that too.

Maybe I won't even bother with episode 3. I doubt this season will turn around and get good.

I actually felt the opposite, I thought season one was a bit of a slow starter that gathered steam as it went along.

Haven't seen this season yet but I find it amusing that anyone would critize season 2 as compared to season one for using the standard cop show stereotypes. Season one was pretty formulaic too (although it executed the formula very, very well): the oddball cop who no one else likes or trusts, the conventional cop who doesn't know what to make of his weird new partner, cops who won't let go of a case despite enormous pressure from the higher-ups, the unraveling of a massive conspiracy that goes to the highest levels of power. Hell, they actually had the most cliche cop scene there is - the angry asshole captain demanding Cohle's badge and gun because he's suspended!
I haven't seen S2, E2 yet
schnitzie : 6/30/2015 10:58 am : link
but it did seem like everybody is talking in frog croaks.

Season 1 is casting a very long shadow. I'm eager to see episode 2.

Bit of a spoiler to learn that Farrell gets shot up but good, but don't forget that Russ Cohle also got eviscerated at the end of Season 1 and survived.

Shot gun wound? Farrell will just rub some dirt in it and get back in the game.

Vaughan hasn't looked this good, clean and spiffy since he was in Swingers.
Oh yeah, and HOLY SHIT ... that was Rick Springfield????
schnitzie : 6/30/2015 11:01 am : link
I kept looking at the shrink and wondering, "Who the FLOCK IS THAT????"

For a minute I thought it was Benedict Cumberbatch in heavy makeup.

Rick Springfield! Cool choice! I knew he looked familiar.

Intimidating/roughing up journalists doesn't seem unrealistic.

using sap gloves and probably put him in the hospital. what would happen in real life if that happened? do you really think the story would just go away? Really?

A break-in and assault in some rundown neighborhood( judging by the homeless just laying around). Check the scene and maybe some canvassing, then what?

And he's beaten a guy with brass knuckles in front of a witness in public. He's not exactly locked down.

I was wondering about that myself -- apparently only his ex-wife knows that he beat that guy senseless? I guess the cops didn't ask the guy (or his son) who was beaten for a description of the guy who tooled on him? OK.
'I guess the cops didn't ask the guy (or his son)'
schabadoo : 6/30/2015 2:22 pm : link
She heard about it somehow. Maybe they're investigating it. Maybe the guy cheats on his wife and doesn't want any scrutiny. No idea.

If he's out of the kid's life and not stopping by the school any more, they'll have to do some leg work. And then someone will stop by and beat the guy again to get him to drop the case.

remember he took all the stuff for the story and the guy's notes and made a comment to him re: the article. Pretty clear why the reporter got crushed.

Even if they don't catch the attacker - that would just bring nuclear heat on the target of the story.

Don't think its the journalist because Farrell messed him up already for Vaughn. I think your theory for him being involved with the banker they visited earlier might be correct, but just don't know
