NFT: Former FSU mascot stabbed to death over recipe

Vin R : 6/29/2015 10:51 pm
Quote:
The two men were reportedly arguing over the amount of spice to put in the gumbo.
Thompson grabbed a wooden board and Halley a small wooden knife, according to the report. Thompson then got his own knife and slashed Halley in the torso three times.
Halley died two days later from the injuries, while Thompson was then arrested on charges of manslaughter

for having using a Native American as a "mascot." Good grief, that is retrograde and offensive.

I gather at NYU, we would have had a mascot "Jew."

Was he wearing his mascot uniform when he was killed?

Otherwise the whole former cheerleader thing isnt adding much to the story for me. Still an interesting way to die though.

You know, schnitzie, I like you but implying that someone deserved to be murdered because of a goddamned mascot is really repulsive.
We get it, you care

maybe there are some windmills outside of BBI you can take a tilt at?

And the mascot
Rob in CT/NYC : 6/30/2015 9:39 am : link
at NYU would pretty clearly be Asian...

If the Seminole Tribe of Florida that approved the use of the Chief Osceola likeness and the name Seminoles doesn't have a problem with it, why do you?
Let's be fair..
FatMan in Charlotte : 6/30/2015 9:43 am : link
no mascot would be named "Jew".

Maybe "Saul the Semite" or "Diamond Dekel".

Even "Lew the Jew" is an option. But just "Jew" doesn't cut it.
Karma's not a real thing.

It's just a buzzword people use to hand wave at unfortunate, if not ironic, shit happens to people they don't particularly care for, where if the same thing had happened to an "innocent party" they might be inclined to call it tragic.
Should read

"...shit that happens..."
Greg in LI -- You know what? You're right.
schnitzie : 6/30/2015 10:47 am : link
I shouldn't have tied the two together like that.

The mascot thing is repulsive all by itself, but of course, he did not deserve to die for it.

Sorry about that!
I doubt there is unanimity on the Seminoles' part
schnitzie : 6/30/2015 11:13 am : link
It's degrading to treat a tribe of people as a pet or "good luck" totem.

I'm kind of looking sideways at the Quakers. Is that okay because Quakers are "cute"?

Should Baruch College have a "Hasid" mascot?
I think people really need to lighten up
MetsAreBack : 6/30/2015 11:20 am : link

Seminoles isnt a derogatory term like Redskins. And the Seminole Tribe of Florida officially sanctions the use of the Seminole as Florida State University’s nickname and of Osceola as FSU's symbol. The larger Seminole nation in Oklahoma has approved its use too.

Nothing to see here.

if you want to get technical
Greg from LI : 6/30/2015 11:22 am : link
FSU takes pains to identify Osceola as a "symbol", not a mascot, and to point out that he doesn't lead cheers or dance around with cheerleaders like mascots do.

I like Stevie the Heebie.
Is schnitzie part of the tribe?
RB^2 : 6/30/2015 2:51 pm : link
That explains why she would want to stick up for the Seminoles.

Boom.

"Fagin" would work well for a baseball team. He could send the steal signs in.

If you lived in Florida instead of just making fun of those of us that do ;-) you would know that the Seminole Tribe has been very involved in, and in lockstep with, every aspect of "Chief Osceola's" participation in FSU's events.

And the fact that the deceased (RIP) formerly held the role of FSU's Chief Osceola has no bearing at all on the situation surrounding his death and is just sensationalist journalism.

No hard feelings, I hope. Peace.
