NFT: Local WWII hero passes away

Dunedin81 : 6/30/2015 9:11 pm
I wanted to share this story. I had the pleasure of meeting Chubby, he was a wonderful man who would tell amazing stories in a humble, matter of fact tone. He was also a semi-pro baseball player who had a shot at the bigs had not he spent four years of his prime in uniform. And as the last of this generation passes, we should do our best to remember not merely those who were memorialized on screen or otherwise but a generation who answered the call.

Quote:
Carl D. “Chubby” Proffitt Jr., the Charlottesville man who made it across 300 yards of Omaha Beach without a scratch on D-Day; who got the 30 men in his landing craft safely on the beach through volleys of machine gun and artillery fire; who fought hedgerow to hedgerow with German soldiers, died Tuesday.

He received a DSC, a Silver Star and two Bronze stars for separate actions, along with two Purple Hearts.

He was also very active in the community upon his return...

coaching youth sports for decades and volunteering his time for a number of other worthwhile ventures.

My step-dad who served on the mine-sweeper USS Zeel in world war II passed away yesterday morning. Also my brother-in-laws dad who served as a marine in Korea and was a career marine passed away yesterday morning. They will be missed.
RIP

Lost my father in January at age 96. The 18th Tank Battalion in Europe.

Soon to be 92. He was a crew chief working on P-47s. My other grandfather was a sailor on an LST that was sunk by a kamikaze at the Battle of Okinawa.
