you would think this year, more than others, there

will be some bargains as the cap room dries up. Once the teams with max money are done spending, you only have to outbid teams offering the MLE.

I really want him to sign here with the Knicks. He's not perfect but he's a good young big that knows his way around the basket. That's a valuable commodity in the NBA. He'd be a good get here. It's just that we never seem to land that FA...hopefully we get our guy for once.
all the big names
djm : 7/1/2015 10:29 am : link
will get crazy deals this off-season and beyond. Forget everything you know about fair contracts or market value...it all goes out the window this very moment. If you think a player is worth 8 million per, he's gonna get 12 mil per now.

IF the player is in his prime or close to it and/or coming off one good year out of the last two seasons, he's gonna receive a contract that appears to be an over pay. I keep seeing people repeatedly say "I want this guy but only for 8 per" ---forget it...you won't get the player.

So either you "over pay" or you don't get the player. Take your pick. The only bargains you will find in FA are the guys that are a little older or more likely, a little younger and unproven. IF the guy has done anything of note in the NBA he's gonna be overpaid this off-season.

Because when a man offers you $120 million to play basketball, you say yes.

that's why I think the guy to get is Monroe. He's the only guy that will be paid fair market value even though he's getting the max. Jordan too...but I don't think we land him and I believe Jordan would actually get a bigger max deal than Monroe...?

I'll take Koufos and Monroe

I think Jordan is signing with the Mavs, Parsons has been recruiting him hard...

I think Knicks somehow get rid of Calderon whether it is trade him or stretch him and they sign Monroe and a bunch of role players to surround him and Melo...

Jordan's Max is about 20 million more than Monroe at 4 years (Jordan at 5 years could max out at 43.5 more but he's reportedly not looking for 5)
How much do you think

Why? At 16 million, he's an absolute steal. I also think his best basketball is ahead of him. He has been playing out of position at PF.

Scott Skiles clashed with him in Milwaukee and was the factor behind him getting traded to Orlando. Now he is in Orlando and is being asked if they should give him the max and it looks like a hard no.

Detroit will give him the max. Does anyone else besides me see SVG is trying to reincarnate his Magic Finals team?

Drummond as Howard
Harris as Lewis
Ilyasova as Turkoglu
Jackson as Nelson
KCP as Lee

If we can get either of them for $10 million or less I'd do it. Stretch Calderon and get O'Quinn at $4 million (as suggested by Zach Lowe).

djm : 7/1/2015 10:49 am : link
we get a little too caught up in the lack of two way ability in players like Monroe. Most players are not two way beasts on both ends of the court. Most do one thing well and get by in other areas and that's fine. You can win with guys like Monroe. Even STAT would have left a better legacy here in NY if the dude could just stay on the fucking court. How many games did Stat and Melo even play together? Not many at all. And STAT was a downright terrible defensive player. Monroe is not as bad as Stat was defensively and he's not damaged goods.

Monroe is a solid player and he gives you interior scoring and rebounding. He's a legit big. He's well worth the "mini" max deal he's gonna command. It would be money well spent. And just because he isn't Dwight Howard defensively doesn't mean he's a total liability on that end of the court.
Brook Lopez
Old Dirty Beckham : 7/1/2015 10:49 am : link
and Thad young got reasonable deals for the Nets.

With all the talk about Monroe to the Knicks I'm curious what everyone thinks about him Vs Brook. Whose better?

Given the contracts being thrown around, it's hard to believe that any of those guys will get less than 10 million.

If you take into account their injury histories, than Monroe by a mile.

Little different types of players. Lopez has a better track record and scoring ability and can space the floor better than Monroe can. Monroe a better rebounder.

Monroe though is more durable, younger, and would make less money giving him a more valuable contract. Would rather sign up for Monroe right now.
Monroe is probably a better defender, is a better rebounder
Ten Ton Hammer : 7/1/2015 10:55 am : link
Lopez is better offensively.
I'd take a healthy Lopez
giantsfan44ab : 7/1/2015 10:56 am : link
over Monroe. Lopez can block shots and is an above average rim protector, although not elite. He's probably worse off at guarding 4s, but when you have an athletic freak like Thad Young to do that work, Lopez can stay around the rim. He is also one of the highest mid-range jump shooters by % in the league.

All that said, when you take injuries into account, I feel alot safer with Monroe.
lopez is better defensively
hitdog42 : 7/1/2015 10:59 am : link
he can protect the rim... and the paint. neither can guard the perimeter.

lopez is an underrated defender. Hes just never been a willing rebounder until the 2nd half of last year.
Lopez a defender?

I'm hoping that O'quinn is one of the last few guys looked at in free agency. As of now I think we are getting a bad perception of what contracts are going to be like simply from the max deals being thrown around and the Aminu deal.

Aminu had a really good playoffs and Portland has money to just throw around so I don't think thats a good benchmark.

He's a name where the cap room may dry up and his market will shrink. I like him on a cheap deal too. I was really talking about the SG trio of Green, Afflalo and Matthews. Those dudes are gonna get paid.
I dont think we have anything...
Italianju : 7/1/2015 11:04 am : link
left after signing Monroe and a SG. The contracts are just too high. Maybe if you stretch Calderon you could come up with another 4-5 mill to offer a guy like Oquinn
Lol Carl
giantsfan44ab : 7/1/2015 11:05 am : link
you throw around "Net fan" like some demeaning insult, kind of how a conservative saying "damn liberals". Haha gave me a good laugh.

Not saying "better" defender means he is a good defender. Hes not a good on ball defender, but he gets 2 blocks in a game and alters a few shots. Neither Monroe or Lopez will be any good defensively in a fast paced game.

If its true they are heaily pursuing Beverly have to assume they have a deal in place for Calderon and if they dont then that is just stupid to have that much money locked up at PG

EricNY33 : 7/1/2015 11:14 am : link
with Greg Monroe is his ability to hit a jumper from 15 ft. His skill set outside of that is ideal for the Triangle, but if you're working him in the high post the ability to hit a jumper is key to keep the defense honest.

I think he'll be better defensively because it's going to be stressed. I don't think much of anything was stressed in Detroit.
As Osi has stated
AnotherGiantsFan : 7/1/2015 11:15 am : link
PB is a PG in name only, nothing else. He'd be looked at as a back court defender acquisition more than anything else. And it'd still be a bad move. He's more annoying than talented on the defensive end.
The knicks could see all of...
Italianju : 7/1/2015 11:16 am : link
Beverely, Grant, and Galloway as combo guards though. LIke if we strike out on the SG's they might just go with those 4. I know that they arent technically SG's but at their size both Galloway and Grant can play some 2. Im not saying id prefer that, but i dont think our interest in Beverley means we def are moving Calderon.
I don't think that's a good enough
giantsfan44ab : 7/1/2015 11:18 am : link
point to bank on. If you're going to debate whether Fisher or SVG is going to stress defense better is a moot point. He's 25, we'll just have to accept his defense for what it is. It's not great, but after throwing out Stat, Bargs and Jason Smith over the last few years, it could certainly be worse.
Like instead of signing a SG for 10-12....
Italianju : 7/1/2015 11:18 am : link
mill maybe they are thinking we can sign a Beverely and Biyombo instead of just Green. Im not saying Beverely and Biyombo specifically but those level players.

Greg Monroe is just so heavy footed as an athlete/person he'll always be limited.. I think he can be solid, but he's never going to completely turn it around. And that's fine.
if he can just be descent or average...
Italianju : 7/1/2015 11:20 am : link
on D then he is a very good NBA player. I think his offense is being undervalued cause he cant shoot 3's (yes im exaggerating). He is a very skilled big man who does a lot of things really well on offense.

Millsap ignoring some of these other suitors
MarshallOnMontana : 7/1/2015 11:23 am : link
But seriously considering Orlando is so random. I just checked to see if he has any ties to the area at all, and he doesn't. More power to him though, I think anyone who is willing to look past current W/L records could see that Orlando is stockpiling an impressive talent base down there and could be a playoff team as soon as next year, even if Millsap ultimately decided against them
well an offer of 4/80
Enzo : 7/1/2015 11:25 am : link
is going to get Millsap's attention, whether it's Orlando, Milwaukee, or anywhere else. Especially at his age. This is likely his last big contract.
Don't want to get too excited
Coach Mason : 7/1/2015 11:26 am : link
but if Monroe is a lock as rumored (months of rumors from multiple sources likely mean this has a good chance to happen). We may still have quite a bit of money to play with depending on his contract.

We are at about 28.5 million and that's not including utilizing the stretch provision on Calderon which would free up approx another 4 million. Secondly, reports form this morning state the cap # may be 2million higher than originally projected.

That could put us at right about 34.5 million. Seems pie in the sky perhaps, but would there be enough left for an LMA or Jordan?
