Maybe he likes the Southeast?
yeah im guessing that 4/80

has a lot to do with his interest. I like Millsap and have been prepared for the massive contracts, but that one is still crazy to me. If you are offering him max money it shouldnt be for max years to.

I'm under the assumption that he could get that money in more than just Atlanta and Orlando, but I'm obviously not in contact with his agent
I doubt Monroe is willing to sign here

if we get Jordan too. I assume he wants to be a center.

couple of thoughts on Monroe
bigbluehoya : 7/1/2015 11:30 am : link
At a certain point, the knock on his defense gets a little bit over-stated. I believe someone posted some analysis the other day that suggested he does just fine on defense when he is defending the 5 and gets owned when he is playing the 4. Especially until Zinger grows into his body a little bit more, and given Zinger's superior athleticism, Monroe ought to be defending the 5 (if he indeed does end up a NYK)and Porzingis the 4.

In a rapidly rising cap environment, if you're paying $15m per year for 15 and 10 on 50% shooting and 70+% from the stripe, you're doing just fine. These may be unsexy numbers for a second option on offense, but he's only the second option in year 1 (and perhaps not even then), if things go well....
Fair points
AnotherGiantsFan : 7/1/2015 11:30 am : link
Greg Monroe is getting a bit of a bad rep. He's a very good player. Have wanted him since last year.

He's a good athlete. He moves comfortably in his body, which is no where near a given with guys of his size. Very coordinated. Those traits have made him a force on the offensive end and on the boards. It could also help him on the defensive end with the right help.
i dont think he would have any problem signing..
Italianju : 7/1/2015 11:30 am : link
here with Jordan. I dont think his issue in DET was having Drummond there. That said it would be very hard to fit them both in and depending on the length of contracts we would have a lot invested in bigs with 2 max deals and the 4th pick. I wouldnt be against it thought as a Melo, Monroe, Jordan frontline is awesome.

Not a horrible deal considered the rumored contract of Afflalo approaching 12-14 mil per.

Yeah same here, I thought he was from Louisiana and checked to make sure he was. Born, raised and attended college there. I know Orlando is exciting and I am happy for them if he goes there, but it kinda stinks seeing Atlanta just hit 60 wins and still isn't an attractive spot for even their own guys. You wonder what else Atlanta can do. At least they are well coached and I am sure they'll find one way or another to hit 50 wins again this year. I think they'll end up taking on David Lee and whatever pick GS gives them.
Damn...
Italianju : 7/1/2015 11:32 am : link
i would have loved Green at that deal. This would have to mean no LA for SA right? I know these deals arent official and they can still work off the cap holds of Leonard/Green but i dont see how the money works with keeping all of them unless they have deals to dump both Diaw/Splitter.
So with Danny Gren resiging
nygiants16 : 7/1/2015 11:34 am : link
Spurs will need to get rid of Splitter to get a deal done with Aldridge...

the Orlando offer is the only one that's been reported so far and there's only so many teams with max cap room, especially once LMA and Jordan decide. If there's another team willing to go 4/80 for him it would be somewhat surprising.
I think Monroe could easily by an 18 and 10 guy in NY
giantsfan44ab : 7/1/2015 11:36 am : link
Josh Smith really hurt the numbers he was able to get. He put up like 18 and 10 when Smith got cut and he won't have to fight for post possessions with a guy like Drummond anymore, although we have Melo here.

Another underrated aspect of his game is playing the passing lanes. 1.2 steals per game doesn't do it enough justice, but he does have good hands and great BB IQ.

I think that was me. All his rate statistics (both offense and defense) are better at the 5. Even his block rate, although he's still not good enough to qualify as a rim protector. You can look it up on 82games.com.
Orlando is such a bizarre city to read/rank as a FA destination
MarshallOnMontana : 7/1/2015 11:37 am : link
It's the place Shaq and Dwight spurned to spread their wings in bigger markets. It's also the place Tmac and Grant Hill flocked to (almost Tim Duncan too, people forget how close he was in summer of 2001). Now they look to be in on Millsap. They are both crappy small market and free agent potential hot spot at the same time. There's not another city like it in the league in my view. Great weather, shit market.

Not exactly a bold statement. He averaged 16 and 10 this season. You're basically saying he can score one more basket a game.
I don't think the Green signing
giantsfan44ab : 7/1/2015 11:40 am : link
indicates they are closing the door on Aldridge. I mean they had to show they are committed to building a good roster around him, so if anything, its a step towards them land LA. If Green bolted, that would've been a scary sign for Aldridge.

But yeah, now SA has to move Splitter and maybe even Diaw. I'd rather have Splitter; I wouldn't mind absorbing his contract. If we could stretch Calderon, we'd have $6-7 mil to work with.
Im very high on Monroe here
Deej : 7/1/2015 11:40 am : link
19-11 sounds right to me. He's going to be so much more free at his natural position, and out of an environment he hates.

I hope Green in SA means LA in LA, since the Lakers are maybe the biggest competition for Monroe.

giantsfan44ab : 7/1/2015 11:42 am : link
I was responding to the comment that Monroe was a "15 and 10 guy". Although its only 3 more points I feel like 18 as opposed to 15 nowadays is the difference between the 2nd and 3rd best scorer on a good team.

If we stretch Calderon and the cap is 2 mill more, it may not be impossible to sign both (at least in theory).

Melo,Monroe and Jordan/LMA would be a team that could make some serious noise in the East.

Depending on the team we were to put out, he'll improve his stats. On a team with DJ and Melo, he'd be something like a 20-8 guy IMO. A team without DJ and he's more of a 19-11 guy as someone else just said.

giantsfan44ab : 7/1/2015 11:50 am : link
his numbers would go down with DJ. If you got O'Quinn who is a mid-range shooter, that would maximize his points/efficiency in the post. But there's no point in that debate right now, gotta see who we actually have a shot at. I think its going to be LA to the Spurs and don't think we have a legit shot at DJ.

From 82 games
Deej : 7/1/2015 11:51 am : link
Monroe was a 17.9 PER guy at PF and a 26.8 PER guy at C last year. Notably, not a huge difference in what opposing PFs and Cs did against him (C's did a bit better at 19.9 PER vs 18.0). But (1) overall net -.1 PER as a PF and +6.9 as a C, and (2) the great Andre Drummond allowed a similar 19.2 PER to opposing Cs.

I really think he'll break out with ~33 mpg at C.
Link - ( New Window )
Perhaps it's because
Ash_3 : 7/1/2015 11:52 am : link
I watched Monroe as a PF or maybe not enough period, but the stats and a lot of the posters here seem to think he'll be a decent defender at C which makes sense given his size and physicality. He's an excellent passer too which is important here since neither Melo or KP are great facilitators from the post.

Eric, that's not what I was meaning to convey. I was saying it's interesting how mixed their free agent history has been, there's really no parallel to them. They are the organization who hasn't been able to retain the 2 best players they've ever had, yet they've also attracted guys like TMAC and Grant Hill who were both mega free agents at the time. Almost nabbed Duncan too.
